21、They are the little sweeties who look pretty cute in a photo, or when sleeping—but a lot less appealing at 30, 000 ft, crying loudly in the seat right next to you.
According to a new survey, almost seven in ten Britons dislike flying with babies so much that they would like to see child-free areas introduced on planes. As for long-distance flights where people want to sleep, almost one in four British travelers believes that no-kid-zones should be fixed as required sections.
The survey was conducted by bookings website LateDeals.co.uk, with 1,108 UK consumers questioned as to what they hate most about air travel.
And our dislike of noisy children and babies on planes runs deep, it seems.
More than a third of us—35 percent—would pay extra to travel on a childless service.
Long-distance passengers would be prepared to pay an additional £63 to the cost of a return ticket if it meant adults only on board. And on short-distance flights, an extra £28 on the price of a return fare would be considered good value if it guaranteed an absence of angry babies in the middle of the economy-class aisle(走道).
However, screaming babies are not the only source of annoyance for British travelers. In fact, according to the research on the most annoying types of airline passengers, a crying baby ranks as only the fourth. Over half of those surveyed—58 percent—selected “drunk travelers” as their pet peeves. People with “bad personal hygiene(卫生)” and travelers who kick the back of the seat in front were also near the top of the list, causing anger to 48 and 47 percent of us respectively(分别地).
Crying babies came in at fourth on the list, a pet peeve for 43 percent of those surveyed.
【1】Britons dislike flying with babies because they_________.
A. make too much noise
B. get angry easily
C. sleep right next to them
D. stay in the economy-class aisle
【2】How many British travelers surveyed would like to have no-kid-zones on planes?
A. About 35%. B. About 43%.
C. About 70%. D. About 58%.
【3】What type of writing is this text?
A. A brochure. B. A tourist guide.
C. An announcement. D. A news report.
【4】What does the underlined phrase “pet peeves” in the last fourth line mean?
A. Pets on a plane.
B. Passengers with a baby.
C. People who annoy you.
D. People who were surveyed.
22、On a clear night, the sky is a wonderful thing. Is there life out there somewhere? Is there another place like Earth where life might exist? If so, where is it? And how far away is it?
Recently, the Kepler spacecraft found “22b”, a planet about six hundred light years away. It is the first planet in a “habitable zone” outside the solar system. That means the planet orbits(环绕) a star like our sun, but it is not too close to it, nor too far away. Because of this position, Kepler-22b might have water, one of the main things needed for life. The newly-discovered planet is about two and a half times larger than the Earth. It is closer to its star than we are to the Sun, but 22b’s sun is smaller than ours, and doesnt produce as much heat. Scientific instruments show the new planet could be made of gases, rocks or some kinds of liquids.
The Kepler spacecraft was named in honor of Johannes Kepler, the seventeenth century German astronomer. It was designed to examine a small part of the Milky Way galaxy(星系)and search for places like the Earth. It was made to inspect over 150,000 stars and measure how bright they are. It looks to see if a star’s brightness gets less over a short time.
If a planet passes between Kepler and the star, it blocks out part of the light. That is what suggested to scientists that there is at least one planet orbiting the star. The instruments on Kepler show the new planet as a small, black dot moving across its sun. An important part of the Kepler experiment is on the Earth. After the spacecraft gathers information, scientists use the telescopes on the ground.
Scientists have found over 2,300 new planets since Kepler was launched. Most are much larger, but it is the new planet’s distance from its star that is important. For life to possibly exist there, the planet’s temperature must not be too hot or too cold.
【1】What can we learn about Kepler-22b?
A. Water must have existed on it.
B. It takes humans about 600 years to get there.
C. It is made of gases, rocks and plenty of liquids.
D. It is the first planet in outer space where life may survive
【2】The Kepler spacecraft was sent into space to
A. show honor to Johannes Kepler
B. observe the changes of a star’s brightness
C. look for Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy
D. measure the brightest star among 150.000 stars
【3】In Paragraph 4 the author mainly tells us
A. how the Kepler system works
B. if the Kepler system sees a new planet
C. how the Kepler system shows a new planet
D. why an important part of the Kepler system remains on the Earth
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A. Life may exist on the new planet in another form.
B. It is colder on the new planet because its sun is smaller.
C. Life can’t exist on planets which are much larger than the Earth.
D. The new planet’s distance from its star decides on the possibility of life existence.

24、 If you find yourself unable to go more than 15 minutes without reaching into your pocket, pulling out your smart phone and checking your e-mail or WeChat, don’t panic. You are hardly alone. A recent survey shows that smart phone users have developed “checking habit” ---frequently checks of e-mails and other Apps. The checks normally lasted less than 30 seconds and were often done every 10 minutes.
On average, the study subjects check their phones 34 times a day. And the strangest part is that they don’t even realize they are doing it. "I hadn’t told my hand to reach out for the phone. It seemed to be doing it all on its own,” wrote Elizabeth Cohen, a medical correspondent for CNN who watched her right hand sneaking away from her side to grab her phone while sitting on the table at dinner with friends.
Loren Frank, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), explains that checking smart phones is rewarding in some way. "Each time you get an e-mail, it’s a little bit exciting, because it means a positive feedback that you’re an important person,” Frank told CNN. Once the brain becomes used to this positive feedback, reaching out for the phone becomes an automatic action you don’t even think about consciously, said Frank. Professor Clifford Nass of Stanford University added that constantly checking your smart phone is also “an attempt to not have to think hard but feel like you are doing something”.
However, every coin has two sides. This habit can cause problems. Studies show that whenever you take a break from what you are doing to check your smart phone, it is hard to go back to your original task, according toAdam Gazzaley, a neurologist at UCSF. That’s not the worst. A survey by South Korean marriage consulting agency Duo earlier this year shows that smart phones are destroying intimate relationships, reports The Korea Herald(韩国先驱报). About half of the respondents said they had had fights with their boyfriend or girlfriend because of smart phones. And 32.8 percent of them fought about smart phone obsession. In this respect, checking smart-phones at regular intervals is a bad habit. But just as an old saying goes, “Bad habits die hard.”
So to get rid of the checking habit, Cohen suggests establishing phone-free times and zones.
