二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Do you like shopping? For shopaholics in the UK, the place to head to used to be the "high street". This location refers to the streets in the centre of a town where businesses and popular branches of retail chains could be found. It was the place where you could find familiar fashion brands and essential everyday items.

But change in our shopping habits has taken its toll on the British high street. News about shops losing money and shutting is now common. Some city-centre department stores have closed and even long-established retailers such as Marks and Spencer have reported profit slumps.

As the BBC's Emma Simpson writes, things have become a lot harder for traditional retailers in recent years. They have faced rising costs from wages, business rates and the requirement to introduce Europe's new data law.

But the biggest threat has come from online shopping. She says, "Consumers now spend one in every five pounds online-and if businesses are seeing 20 percent fewer sales on the shop floor, then profit margins will be squeezed."

While some of us like to window shop-browsing for things to buy, only to purchase them online at a discount-the fact is that, overall, shoppers are making fewer visits to high streets. Eventually, town centres could become like ghost towns. If people aren't out and about shopping, they won't use other services, like cafes, restaurants and cinemas. It also results in job losses.

The British Retail Consortium has already warned that 900, 000 UK retail jobs could be lost by 2025. The high street has also suffered from the coming of big shopping malls, which offer a retail experience under one roof, with free parking, away from the bad weather!

Meanwhile, back on the high street, some shops still exist. Analysts have said it's those that have moved away from traditional retailing that are surviving. These include beauty salons, nail bars and independent coffee shops-but are these kinds of shops enough to keep the British high street open for business?

    1What is the "high street"?

A.The street in the high places in the UK. B.The street without big shopping malls.

C.The street where you can buy fast food. D.The main street of a town with many businesses.

2What do the underlined words "taken its toll" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Had a bad effect. B.Taken its advantage.

C.Done something good. D.Changed its form.

3What is the main cause of the decline of the traditional retail?

A.Rising costs from wages. B.Online shopping.

C.Business rates. D.Europe's new data law.

4Which kind of businesses can survive on the high street?

A.Popular branches of retail chains. B.Fashion retailers.

C.Department stores. D.Beauty salons and nail bars.

  • 22、Children love it when someone reads a book to them. They love funny sounds, rhyming words and silly pictures. They love the sound of their mom or dad’s voice. Sometimes, however, their mom or dad can’t read to them, because that parent is in prison.

Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project, started in 1993, is now a national program that promotes incarcerated parents reading to their children. Church or service groups donate books and postage. Incarcerated parents pick out books, read them and either volunteers or prison workers mail the books and tapes out to the children. Last May, we distributed 191 books, meaning that 191 children received a book and a tape. The incarcerated readers record their books, followed by a personal message to the child. Sometimes it is amusing listening to strong, tattooed (纹身) muscle men making animal sounds or funny voices of different characters. Sometimes all I hear is silence, and then sounds that confirm my guess that they arc calming themselves after an unexpected wave of feelings.

Seventy percent of children of incarcerated parents eventually end up facing the justice system themselves at some point in their lives. Many of these children end up doing hard time in jails.

In reality, though, they are doing hard time now as 12-year-olds, 7-ycar-olds, and even as babies. They grow up thinking that their parent is “bad” and doesn’t care. They are often teased and feel they have to defend themselves or their parent, sometimes in a violent way.

When they receive in the mail a book and a tape of their parent reading to them, they hear another message, “Daddy/Mommy loves me; he/she has a happy voice; he/she thinks reading is cool. ”

Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project is just a small pill for one huge social illness.

But when we think we are merely scratching the surface at least 191 kids are feeling a little bit better!

【1】What do incarcerated parents do in Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project?

C.They gain a lot from their parents’ life experience.

D.They themselves may become lawbreakers in the future.

  • 23、   I had a teacher who used to wake up in class by shouting: “The early bird gets the worm!” I say “let him have the worm”. I hate food that doesn’t stay still, and avoid Japanese restaurants for that very reason. Anyway, I stopped eating worms at the age of three, switching to regular breakfasts of cereal(谷物), to which I would add extra sugar.

Recently I was thinking about early birds and the competitive spirit after receiving a letter from a reader in Malaysia: ”My son deliberately throws away marks because he doesn’t like to be top of the class. What shall I do?” Give him a round of “applause” for being smart! Actually many children in Asia tend to be the focus by performing better.

Placed into a very competitive class when I was 11, I quickly learned the ideal position was second to last. The top three performers and the very last person are highlighted; the second-to-last contestant is INVISIBLE. And it’s an easy position to get—just deliberately underperform at every test. I could do that. I once came second to last in eight straight sports day races. No one suspected anything. I was so invisible that I could have robbed a bank in my street and no one would have noticed.

At the London Olympics a few months ago, badminton pairs from three Asian countries deliberately tried to lost matches to draw good lots in later rounds. It was funny to watch, but they were all thrown out for poor sportsmanship. What they really needed were acting lessons, their moves were so unconvincing. “Oops, I hit the ball in entirely the wrong direction.”

The other day, I took the children out and they raced for the car. “I’m first,” said one. The second said: “First is worst, second is best.” Together they sang at the last one: “And third’s the one with a hairy chest.”

It struck me that the organizers of sports matches could use this song when people deliberately lost matches. “I lost,” the delighted loser will say. The judges could still declare them winners, pointing to a new, optional regulation: “First is worst, second is best, third’s the one with a hairy chest.”

1Why did the author dislike Japanese restaurant?

A.Its food was served raw. B.Its food contained worms.

C.He was tempted by cereal. D.He was affected by the saying.

2How did the author manage to be invisible in a competitive class?

A.He highlighted the top three students.

B.He came to second in sports races.

C.He hid himself in a bank skillfully.

    D.He intentionally underperformed.

3What can be learned from the passage?

A.The judge is encouraged to eliminate the dishonest players.

B.Players disqualified from Olympic doubles for using drugs.

C.Children’s song praises the dramatic acting skills of athletes.

D.players purposefully failed for easier lots in the following rounds.

4Which saying might the author possibly support?

A.Great minds think alike. B.God favors those who are prepared.

C.Honesty is the best policy. D.A bird in hand is worth two in the bush
