Look at the bus. It’s a little different from other buses. It’s black and white, and has two black “ears” on the top, just like a giant panda. The lights of the bus are its “eyes”. This is the popular Panda Bus in China. The bus is 12 meters long and there are 23 seats on it.

The Panda Bus is popular not just because of its cute looks. You can also find something cool when you get on it. First of all, it’s very easy for people to buy tickets. They don’t need to use their phones or bus cards like before. All they need are their hands. They can buy tickets just by scanning(扫描)their hands. In this way, people can also buy drinks and food on the bus. There is a vending machine(自动贩卖机)in the middle of the bus. Another surprise is the small computer on the back of each seat. People can choose to watch a movie on the way. How interesting! There are also some cameras on the bus. If someone steals(偷)things, these cameras will catch them. So, it’s safe and comfortable for people to take the bus. Most importantly, the bus is driverless(无人驾驶的). It can stop at lights and park at the stop all by itself. It only needs someone to watch all the way just in case. And it usually runs a little slower than other buses.

  • 25、Oliver set off in the direction of London. “No one will find me in London,” he thought. He walked for twenty miles, then he lay down in a field and fell asleep. He walked for seven more days, begging for food and water. Then on the seventh day he walked slowly into a small town and sat down to rest. His feet were bleeding and he was covered in dirt. A boy saw him and came to talk to him.

“Hello, where have you been?” asked the boy.

The boy was about the same age as Oliver, but he was a strange-looking boy. He had a large hat and he wore a man’s coat, which came nearly to his feet. He was just a dirty little boy but he acted and talked like an adult. “I’ve walked for seven days,” said Oliver. “I’m very tired and hungry.” “Well,” said the boy, “come with me and I’ll get you something to eat.”

The boy bought Oliver some food. Then, as Oliver ate hungrily, they talked.

“Are you going to London?” the boy asked.

    “Yes,” Oliver replied.

“Have you got anywhere to stay?”

    “No.”

“I know an old gentleman who lives in London.” said the boy. “________”.

Oliver was thankful for his offer. His new friend was Jack Dawkins, but Jack’s friends called him the Dodger.

Later that night they reached London. The Dodger led Oliver to a narrow smelly street, and into a house. They climbed the stairs and went into a room at the top.

Oliver looked around. They were in a large room. The walls and ceiling were black with age and dirt. A man was cooking some food in a frying pan over a fire. The man had an ugly face and dirty red hair. There were beds on the floors. Four or five boys, about the same age as the Dodger, sat around a table.

“Fagin,” said the Dodger, “this is my friend Oliver Twist.”

The man grinned, then he shook Oliver’s hand and said, “We are very glad to meet you, Oliver.”

  • 26、Making a decision is never easy. You spend a lot of time weighing costs and benefits (获益).

But you have to pick one.

Now, a group of Canadian scientists say that a tiny area of our brains, called the lateral habenula (外侧缰核), may be to ―blame (责备) for the difficulty of decisions.

The lateral habenula is one of the smallest parts of the brain. Yet, the research has found that this brain area is connected to depression (抑郁). When scientists turned it off in a patient’s brain, the patient seemed to be happier.

However, the new study might have made this more difficult to understand.

In the new study, scientists trained rats to pick between two choices – receiving one piece of food regularly or four pieces less often.

They choose the four pieces when they didn’t have to wait too long to receive them. But they picked the single piece as the waiting time increased. This means that rats also have the ability to weigh costs and benefits, just like humans.

Scientists then turned off the lateral habenula in the rats’ brains. When they did this, the rats started making choices randomly. It seemed that they had no idea which choice might be better for them.

―This finding shows how the brain works when making important decisions, said Professor Stan Floresco of University of British Columbia, Canada, to Science Daily. These decisions include choosing between job offers or which house to buy.

It also helps to clear up scientists’ misunderstanding about the lateral habenula’s function (作用). When this area is shut off, patients with depression seem to feel better, but that might not be because they feel happier. ―They may simply no longer care as much about what is making them feel depressed, said Floresco.

【1】We can tell from the first two paragraphs that .

A.most people don’t like making decisions or choices

B.it’s good to weigh costs and benefits before making decisions

C.it’s unnecessary to blame people who are unable to make decisions

D.scientists may have found out why it’s sometimes hard for us to make decisions

【2】Which of these followings about lateral habenula is TRUE?

A.It’s one of the largest parts of the brain.

B.It’s a newly discovered part of the brain.

C.It used to be thought of as useless.

D.It has more than one function.

【3】The underlined word ―randomly in Paragraph 7 probably means .

    A.repeatedly

    B.without a good result

    C.without a normal pattern (正常模式)

    D.regularly

【4】What might people do if their lateral habenulais shut down?

A.They might make decisions without thinking much.

B.They might feel more depressed than before.

C.They might care more about other people.

D.They might have a better ability to weigh costs and benefits.
