四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot (聊天机器人) tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with their homework.

Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and e-mails, create recipes (食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.

Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices (设备).

The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread inaccurate (不准确的) information.

“It does not build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic (学术的) and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.

Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to block the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.

However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting (起草) policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.

Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor (副校长) for education at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not sensible (明智的). “We have to know that [AI] is a tool people will use,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is “adapt our learning, teaching and examinations”. That way, we can “have integrity (诚信) while recognizing the use of the tool”.

【1】Some schools in the US banned the use of ChatGPT because ________.

A.students may use it to cheat on homework

    B.it hardly provides correct information

C.it takes the place of teachers

    【2】Jenna Lyle thinks that ________.

A.ChatGPT is necessary for academic and lifelong success

B.using ChatGPT is not good for developing students’ minds

C.ChatGPT is so far the smartest AI chatbot tool

【3】What did the educators in the US do to avoid the use of ChatGPT?

    a. They blocked students’ access to the tool.

    b. They learned to recognize papers written by ChatGPT.

    c. They changed the forms of assignment.

    d. They suggested laws to ban the use of ChatGPT.

    A.ab

    B.ac

    C.bc

【4】Which opinion is NOT mentioned in the story?

A.Using ChatGPT makes students lazy in thinking.

B.The complete ban on using ChatGPT is not wise.

    C.ChatGPT will completely change education.

  • 25、In many high schools, there are strict rules about using mobile phones. If your phone rings in class, for example, the teacher will be very angry.

Every mobile phone has a ringtone(铃声) . It tells you that someone is calling you. Now, there is a ringtone called “mosquitotone(蚊子铃声) ”. Using it, students can receive calls and text messages in class but the teacher will not realize what is happening. How? Mosquitotone has a special sound. Only children and teenagers can hear it. As we get older, we are unable to hear some sounds with high frequencies(频率) . As a result, a child or teenager can hear the mosquitotone ringtone, but it’s inaudible to someone 20 or older. But sometimes, people over 20 can hear the ringtone. One British student’s phone uses mosquitotone. In class, the student’s phone rang. The 32-year-old teacher looked at the student and became unhappy. “I heard that. You know the rule: no mobile phone in class. ”

Not all the students are interested in mosquitotone. Jerry Jones, a high school student of 17, says, “Using mosquitotone too often is bad of our hearing. I may use it for pleasure, but not in class. It’s unfair to the teachers!” What do parents think of mosquitotone? “I think it is perfect for places like movies and theaters.” says Connie Nelson, 44. “Think about it. You’re watching a film and someone’s mobile phone rings. Mosquitotone is good because many people don’t hear it. However, it also has a bad influence on their study if students use it in class. ”

    【1】Mosquitotone works because ________.

    A.it is very loud

    B.it has no sound

    C.it has a beautiful sound

    D.it uses high frequencies

【2】The underlined part “it’s inaudible to” means “________”.

    A.it can’t be seen by

    B.it can’t be heard by

    C.it isn’t popular with

    D.it isn’t healthy for

【3】Connie Nelson thinks that mosquitotone ________.

    A.has no bad influence

    B.is unfair to the teacher

    C.has its advantage and disadvantage

D.can’t be used in any public place

  • 27、 “The world has never been a better place to live in” says science writer Matt Ridley, “and it will keep on getting better.” Read on to see how Ridley makes his case. Right or wrong? You decide.

Compared with 50 years ago, when I was just four years old, people now make nearly three times as much money, eat one third more food and expect to live one third longer. In fact, it’s hard to find any areas of the world that’s worse off  now than it was then, even though the world population has more than doubled over that period.

One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer-lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel and shelter—have grown much cheaper. Take one example: In 1800, a candle providing one hour’s light cost six hours’ work. In the 1880s, the same light from a lamp took 15 minutes’ work to pay for. In 1950, it was eight seconds. Today, it’s half a second. In these terms, we are 43,200 times better off than in1800.

In the United States, rivers, lakes, seas and air are getting cleaner all the time. A car today produces less pollution traveling at full speed than a parked car did from leaks (泄漏) in 1970.

Although the world population is growing, the rate (率) of increase has been falling for 50 years. Across the world, national birth rates are lower now than in 1960, and in the less developed world, the birth rate has almost halved. According to a research report from the United Nations, population will start falling once it reaches 9.2 billion in 2075. After all, there are already seven billion people on earth, and they are eating better and better.

In 1970s, there were 550 billion barrels (桶) of oil reserves (储存) in the world, and in the 20 years that followed the world used up 600 billion. So by 1990, reserves should have been overused by 50 billion barrels. Instead, it is reported there are 900 billion today. They will last for many years and people will find something in place of oil long before they run out.

The more we develop, the more we can develop. The more we invent, the more inventions become possible. For 200 years, pessimists (people who believe that terrible things will happen in future) have had all the headlines—even though optimists have far more often been right. There are some reasons for pessimists. No charity (慈善机构) ever raised money by saying things are getting better. No journalist ever got the front page writing a story about how terrible things won’t happen. Don’t be a pessimist—dare to be an optimist!

    【1】Today, providing one hour’s light costs ______.

    A. 6 hours’ work    B. 15 minutes’ work

    C. 8 seconds’ work  D. 0.5 second’s work

【2】Which of the following is true, according to the passage?

    A. Things we used to need were much cheaper than they are today.

    B. The pollution today is much more serious than it was long ago.

    C. Population problem has nearly made the world stop developing.

    D. It’s not necessary to be worried about oil reserves in the world.

【3】What does the word optimists in the last paragraph mean?

    A. People who are brave enough to face anything terrible.

    B. People who can always tell good things from bad ones.

    C. People who have hopeful and happy feelings about life.

    D. People who don’t easily believe what they’re told about.

【4】 Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. Never Give Up   B. Cheer Up

    C. Don’t Be Sad   D. Think Out
