  • 25、   Last year, I was working on a book about penguins (企鹅), and I went on a trip to Antarctica. Antarctica is home to many penguins, so it's a perfect place to take photographs of them. A boat was taking a group of scientists there on a research trip, and there was space for me. I'm not a good sailor, but it was the easiest way to get there.

The night before we left, I couldn't sleep. What if there were storms while we were on the boat? What if I got seasick? I told myself that everything would be OK.

The day we left, the weather was beautiful. The ocean was peaceful, and the sky was blue. But it didn't stay that way for long!

Later that day, a huge storm came. Rain poured down, and the waves were twelve metres high. Our boat was wildly tossed (使上下摇晃). I was very afraid, and then I got seasick.

By the third day, the storm was over. We were in the middle of the ocean, hundreds of kilometres from home. Thick mist hung in the air, and everything was white. It was a strange and lonely sight.

Then we hit pack ice (大块浮冰). The boat had to push its way through the ice. I told myself that the ice meant we were getting close to the penguins.

Our boat was too long to sail to the mainland, so we changed to the Zodiac. The Zodiac didn't look very safe - it was the smallest boat I'd ever seen! But if I wanted to see those penguins, I didn't have any choice.

There were thousands and thousands of penguins. They covered the beach as far as I could see. I took dozens of (几十) photos - some of the best I've ever taken.

Now the book has been published and I'm already planning my next one. I just need to think of an interesting animal that lives a little closer to home.

1What does the writer most probably do?

    A.A wildlife photographer. B.A doctor.

    C.An animal scientist. D.A sailor.

2Which of the following statements is NOT true according to this passage?

A.The first day on the sea, they were caught in a huge storm.

B.By the third day they arrived in the middle of the ocean.

C.They changed to the Zodiac because their boat was too long.

D.The writer is now planning his next trip to Antarctica.

3Which word best describes the trip to Antarctica?

    A.pleasant B.adventurous C.boring D.interesting

4Choose the best title for this passage.

A.A Perfect Place for Penguins B.A Brave Heart

  • 27、   Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary(害怕的) things. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most. Here are the top 5 answers from our survey: Scary movies and TV shows; Scary dreams; Thunderstorms, hurricanes (飓风), and other horrible weather; War and terrorism (恐怖行动); Sounds heard at night.

But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else. Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.

What is fear? Fear is a feeling that everyone has — it’s programmed into all of us — and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby cries, and their mom comes over to comfort him or her, helping the baby feel safe and OK again.

    Real vs. Pretend

The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it. As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witches(女巫), he can tell himself, “Wait a minute. They’re only pretend things. I don’t need to worry about them.”

The same goes for the dark. A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bed? Is that a thief I hear? With the help of a parent, kids can get more comfortable in the dark. Using a night light or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

1What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The list of fears is not complete.

B.The things people fear are of no big fear.

C.Kids have more fears than people think.

D.People are afraid of different things.

    2In the writer’s opinion, ___________.

A.having a sense of fear is not a bad thing

B.babies have a weak sense of fear

C.fear is not something that we are born with

D.not all people can react to dangerous things

3What does the underlined word “pretend” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Ugly B.Usual C.Unreal D.Lovely
