21、Poet Wadsworth Longfellow said “music is the universal language of mankind”, and there’s growing evidence that he was right. New research shows people with Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆) disease often respond to familiar music or song lyrics, even when their memories and ability to participate in conversation may be flagging.
Jonathan Graff-Radford,Doctor of Medicine, explains on The Mayo Clinic website why this may be: “Musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer’s patients because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.”
When English senior Ted McDermott was diagnosed with Alzheimer in 2016, his son Simon McDermott found Ted became verbally and physically violent as the disease progressed. Grateful for the resources provided by the Alzheimer’s Society, Simon and 80-year-old Ted made videos of their daily car duets (二重唱) for a fundraising ‘‘Singing for the Brain” program in 2019. Truly remarkable, considering that some days Ted didn’t recognize Simon.
The songs brought them to the attention of the public. In just a few months their efforts had considerable success on YouTube, raising over 100,000, and resulting in a contract with Decca Records for 80-year-old Ted. Although Ted has begun to decline a little in the last years, he always remembers the words to his favorite songs and is happy to go with Simon daily in the car to sing. Different music-related programs and projects are offered by the U.K. Alzheimer’s Society organizations. These programs are designed for people with Alzheimer to provide mental stimulation in a supportive social environment.
Social engagement and keeping your brain active, along with a healthy diet and exercising, may seem like obvious good habits to follow for your health in general. They’ve also been proven to be factors in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer.
It’s never too late to start taking care of your body and your brain — so make music appreciation or singing part of the routine of your loved one struggling with Alzheimer. As William Shakespeare said, “If music be the food of love, play on.”

22、My friend Gwen posted a photo yesterday on her social page. The photo was of a Christmas tree made from carefully-placed books. It was very clever. After doing a little research, I found that making Christmas trees from a pile of books is popular right now, especially at libraries.
The Inglewood Library in Los Angeles created a tree from little used books using red books on the bottom to copy a tree skirt and green books for the tree itself. Other examples are from the Gleeson Library in San Francisco and a small bookstore window in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. One of the great things about using books to create a decorative Christmas tree is that there is no waste. After Dec 25, the books just go back on the shelf.
I couldn’t find any specific instructions online with tips for building a tree out of books, but it seemed pretty simple. So last night, my 9-year-old son and I emptied several shelves in his room and built our own tree out of copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Stink, Harry Potter and dozens of other books. The top book on the tree is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
We took an old string of lights and wrapped them around the tree and a spare star tree topper that we had and lit the tree of books up. He was thrilled to have his own Christmas tree in his bedroom.
We didn’t worry about making the tree perfectly symmetrical (对称的), but with a little more time and patience we could have made a tree that was taller and a little neater. That wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun for us, though. I could see the tree through the crack in his door last night as he was sleeping, and it made me smile every time I walked past his bedroom.

23、 You can't see your sleeping pet's brain waves, but its behavior can tell you when Fido or Fluffy might be dreaming. If you watch closely, you'll see that as your cat falls asleep, her breathing becomes slow and regular and her body still. She has entered the first stage of sleep, called slow-wave sleep. After about 15 minutes you'll notice a change in her breathing. Her paws and whiskers twitch(抽动) and she flicks an ear. Fluffy has entered REM(Rapid Eye Movement), or dreaming stage of sleep. Although she twitches and makes little grunting noises, messages from her brain to the large muscles in her legs are blocked, so she can’t run about. She is in a state of “sleep paralysis”.
Back in 1963, Michel Jouvet, a French scientist who was studying sleep in cats, interrupted their sleep paralysis. Even though they were completely asleep, the dreaming cats began to chase balls that Jouvet couldn't see and arched their backs at invisible enemies. He figured he was watching them act out their dreams!
What were they dreaming about? Mostly, the dreaming cats seemed to be practising important cat skills: stalking, pouncing and fighting.
In another study, neuroscientist Matt Wilson recorded rats' brain waves while they learned mazes(迷宫). One day, he left the brain-wave-recording machine on while the rats fell asleep. The pattern of brain waves in the sleeping rats matched the pattern from the maze so closely that Wilson could figure out exactly which part of the maze each rat was dreaming about!
Many researchers now think that in both people and animals, one purpose of dreams is to practise important skills and figure out recent learning. This may explain why so many people dream about fighting and escaping, skills that were probably important to our ancestors, and why dreaming affects our ability to learn.
Do all animals dream? From looking at the brain waves of sleeping animals, scientists think that all mammals dream, but reptiles, fish, and invertebrates(无脊椎动物) don't.(They're not sure about birds.)
【1】What can we know about "sleep paralysis"?
A.It's the initial step of sleep.
B.I features slow-wave sleep.
C.It is in a motionless state.
D.It refers to the dreaming stage.
【2】In Michel Jouvet's study, when cats were dreaming, they were____________.
A.exercising basic skills.

D.learning mazes.
【3】What can be inferred from the text?
A.The museles of the reaming eats are blocked to move.
B.Dreaming a lot can help humans learn more.
C.Eighting and escaping are not necessary for ancestors.

24、British chip maker Walkers is being flooded with mail deliveries of its own packaging. An online petition (请愿) with more than 312,000 signatures so far urges signers to mail their empty chip plastic bags to Walkers as an act of protest against the bags’ non-recyclable design.
As petition organizer Geraint Ashcroft explained, the majority of chip packets, made from metallized plastic, are not recyclable and have been found fully undamaged up to 33 years after consumption. The UK alone consumes 6 billion bags of chips a year, and Walkers turns out 11 million bags daily. Ashcroft wrote, “At today’s consumption rate in 33 years’ time, there will be 200 billion packets either sent to landfill or polluting our oceans. Many will be eaten by animals fish or birds leading to a slow death.”
Mailing the bags to Walkers is a way to hold the company accountable for its packaging and to pressure it to come up with a better design. Because Walkers has what’s known as a’Freepost’ address, the Royal Mail postal service is obligated (有义务的) to deliver anything that is addressed correctly — even if it’s an empty chip bag. But it is controversial. Royal Mail isn’t happy about it,asking people to put their chip bags in an envelope to help with ease of delivery. Critics on Twitter question the logic of buying a product in order to protest against its producer and suggest that giving up chips altogether would improve one’s health as well as the environment.
Walkers issued a statement on Wednesday, saying it will make its packaging plastic-free by 2025.“We have received some returned packets and recognized the efforts being made to bring the issue of packaging waste to our attention. The returned packets will be used in our research as we work towards our commitment of improving the recyclability of our packaging.”
【1】Why do people mail their empty chip bags to Walkers?
A.To make Walkers use them once more.
B.To exchange them for some new chips.
C.To object to Walkers’ plastic packaging.
D.To appeal to people for not using the bags.
【2】What does the second paragraph mainly show?
A.The harm of chip bags.
B.The organization of the petition.
C.The production of plastic bags.
D.The opinion of Geraint Ashcroft.
【3】What is the underlined word“accountable”in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Explainable.
B.Responsible.
C.Essential.
D.Anxious.
【4】How does Walkers react to the campaign?
A.Doubtfully.
B.Oppositely.
C.Cautiously.
D.Positively.
25、Is Tap Water Safe to Drink?
Tap water is not without its problems. More recently, the Michigan City of Flint has been struggling with high lead (铅) levels in its drinking water. Over the years people have witnessed major ____of groundwater pollution leading to unhealthy tap water.
The nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) detected some 260 pollutants in public water supplies in 42 states and faulted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for ____ to establish standards on so many of the pollutants - from industry, agriculture, and urban rivers - that do end up in our water.
Despite these seemingly ____ statistics, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), which has also conducted a series of ____ tests on municipal (市政的) water supplies as well as bottled water, says, “In the short term, if you are an adult with no special health ____, and you are not pregnant, then you can drink most cities’ tap water without having to worry.” This is because most of the pollutants in public water supplies exist at such small concentrations that most people would have to ____ very large quantities for health problems to occur.
____, look at your water bottles carefully. It’s common for them to list the source as “municipal”, which means you paid for what ____ is bottled tap water.
“Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and those with weakened immune systems can be vulnerable (脆弱的) to the risks posed by polluted water,” NRDC does ____, however. The group suggests that anyone who may be at risk obtain a copy of their city’s annual water quality report and review it with their ____.
As for bottled water, 25 to 30 percent of it comes straight from municipal tap water systems, despite the pretty nature ____ on the bottles that imply otherwise. Some of that water goes through additional filtering (过滤), but some does not. What’s more, bottled water is required to be ____less frequently than tap water for bacteria and chemical pollutants, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration bottled water rules allow for some pollution by E. coli (大肠杆菌), ____ to EPA tap water rules that prohibit any such pollution.
Also, NRDC found that there are no ____ for bottled water to be disinfected or tested for parasites (寄生虫), unlike more strict EPA rules regulating tap water. This leaves the possibility ____, says NRDC, that some bottled water may present similar health threats to those with weakened immune systems.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as fars as possible.
Once it was possible to define male and female roles easily by the division of labor. Men worked outside the home and earned the income to support their families, while women cooked the meals and took care of the home and the children. These roles were firmly fixed for most people, and there was not much opportunity for women to exchange their roles. But by the middle of this century, men’s and women’s roles were becoming less firmly fixed.
In the 1950s, economic and social success was the goal of the typical American. But in the 1960s a new force developed called the counterculture. The people involved in this movement did not value the middle-class American goals. The counterculture presented men and women with new role choices. Taking more interest in childcare, men began to share child-raising tasks with their wives. In fact, some young men and women moved to communal homes or farms where the economic and childcare responsibilities were shared equally by both sexes. In addition, many Americans did not value the traditional male role of soldier. Some young men refused to be drafted as soldiers to fight in the war in Vietnam.
In terms of numbers, the counterculture was not a very large group of people. But its influence spread to many parts of American society. Working men of all classes began to change their economic and social patterns. Industrial workers and business executives alike cut down on “overtime” work so that they could spend more leisure time with their families. Some doctors, lawyers, and teachers turned away from high paying situations to practice their professions in poorer neighborhoods.
In the 1970s, the feminist movement, or women’s liberation, produced additional economic and social changes. Women of all ages and at all levels of society were entering the work force in greater numbers. Most of them still took traditional women’s jobs as public school teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. But some women began to enter traditionally male occupations: police work, banking, dentistry, and construction work. Women were asking for equal work, and equal opportunities for promotion.
Today the experts generally agree that important changes are taking place in the roles of men and women. Naturally, there are difficulties in adjusting to these transformations.
