Yang Peijie, 71, has been performing Haian flower-drum dances(海安花鼓)for more than fifty years.
The Haian flower-drum dance dates back to more than 400 years. It became popular in the areas of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River in the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644). 1. 在过去,它被用来展现当地人们的生活。“It’s more gentle compared to flower-drum dances in other places such as in Anhui and Hunan, ” Yang said. Many of its dance steps came from daily life and express positive feelings. For example, fengbailiu (风摆柳) means you have to twist (弯曲) your body like the wind blowing willow trees.
Yang started to learn the dance from old artists in the 1960s. At that time, people could only learn it this way. There were no textbooks. 2. Worrying it might get lost, Yang spent five years studying the history of the dance and recorded its steps in detail. He visited almost all the local artists and wrote a book about it.
3. In recent years, Yang has kept on spreading the dance among all age groups. He set up a team to work on this. The team members have visited about eight schools to teach students. It has been combined (结合)with break-time exercises in many schools. 4. To interest kids, they separate difficult dance steps into several simple ones. Xu Hongxuan, a pupil from Haian Elementary School said, “I have been practicing it for three years. I think it’s more interesting than the radio gymnastic exercises(广播体操). We beat drums to the music in all kinds of ways. Some dance steps are difficult, 5. 但当我掌握了它们之后,我感到开心和自豪。 Now I am a member of the flowerdrum dance club. ”
Besides schools, Yang and the team members also go to communities and parks to teach older people. “I don’t want to see the art fail to be passed down from me, ” Yang said.

24、Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell, New Jersey, was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals, and fish.
The lake water is polluted (污染的). It is in a color of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants.
How does this happen? First we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog so the rain water was clean.
Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals (化学品) in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects (昆虫). There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines or shops. Other chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rain water picks up all the chemicals from homes and businesses and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.
Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas (油和汽) from boats often get into the lake. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.
People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn't use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people's lives. Only then can Lake Ponkapog be a beautiful, clean lake again.

B. use less water
C. grow fewer plants in the gardens
D. use more motorboats on the lake
【5】The passage is about ______.

25、There are many deserts on the earth. And the following are some facts you may find interesting.
What are deserts like?
Deserts can be hot and dry places. Rain may not fall there for months or years. Some deserts are sandy and stony(多石的). Deserts can also be very windy places. The wind can change the shape of the deserts. It moves sand around from place to place.
Temperatures in the desert can be different so much. During the daytime, the temperature may reach 40℃ even in the shade(阴凉处). At night deserts can become very cold. In winter there may even be a frost(霜冻)in the early morning.

The camel is sometimes called “the ship of the desert”. It stores food in its hump(驼峰)and can go for days without water. It has large feet which help it not to fall into the soft sand. Its long eyelashes(睫毛)keep out the sand during sandstorms.
An oasis is an area of the desert where water may be found. The water may be in pools or under the ground. People and animals visit an oasis for water and food. Plants grow at an oasis. Some farmers are able to grow crops here.
The Arabian Desert
The Arabian Desert lies between the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf(海湾). In some parts of the desert, it is too hot for people to live. Oil was discovered under parts of the desert and in the Arabian Gulf. This oil has made some countries in the area very rich. 26、 Stonchenge is a famous place in England, one of the oldest and most mysterious(神秘的)places in the world. It was probably put up between 1800 B. C. and 1400 B. C. It lies in the city of Salisbury, which is about 13 km south of Stonchenge.
Stonehenge was a ring of standing stones, including upright(垂直的)stones with a horizontal(水平的)stone lying across the top. When it was completed, it was made up of a double circle of stones with two more groups of stones outside the circles. Over time, however, many of the stones have been broken by wind and rain, only a small number is still standing today.
It is unclear who built Stonchenge or even how it was built. Many of the stones must have been transported over 250 miles to Stonchenge. Single stones, some of them weighing about four tons, must have been sent on rivers and rolled over land on tree trunks(树干). They can’t have been carried! The men who moved the stones didn’t have wheels or horses. Each stone had to be moved by hand.
The purpose of Stonchenge is just as mysteries. It has been called a place to honor ancestors, a sun temple, an ancient clock and a calendar. Some people think the stones have been built in a special way to mark sunrise and sunset at certain times during the year, because the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Others have even thought that it was an ancient generator, which is a machine to produce electricity, because it was built along energy lines in the earth and was used to make use of the earth’s natural energies.

27、
How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians (埃及人) invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial (日晷) about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical (机械的) clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. In 1927, the first quartz (石英) clock was developed. It’s cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. In 1956, came the digital (数字的) clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word “ordinary”?
