  • 25、Many people believe Henry Ford invented the car. But Henry Ford did not start to build his first car until 1896. That was eleven years after two Germans developed the world's first car. Many people believe Henry Ford invented the production line(生产线) that moved a car's parts(零部件) to the worker, instead of making the worker move to the parts. That is not true, either. Many factory owners used methods of this kind before Ford. What Henry Ford did was to use other people's ideas and make them better. And he made the whole factory a moving production line.

In the early days of the automobile, almost every car maker raced his cars. It was the best way of getting public notice. Henry Ford decided to build a racing car. Ford's most famous race was his first one. It was also the last race in which he drove the car himself.

The race was in 1901, at a field near Detroit. All of the most famous cars had entered, but only two were left: the Winton and Ford. The Winton was famous for its speed. Most people thought the race was over before it began.

The Winton took an early lead. But halfway through the race, it began to lose power. Ford started to gain. And near the end of the race, he took the lead. Ford won the race and defeated the Winton. His name appeared in newspapers and he became wellknown all over the United States. Within weeks of the race, Henry Ford formed a new automobile company. In 1903, a doctor in Detroit bought the first car from the company. That sale was the beginning of Henry Ford's dream. Ford said: “I will build a motor car for most of people. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for one person to operate and care for. It will be built of the best materials. It will be built by the best men. It will be so low in price that everybody can afford”

The Model T was a car of that kind. It only cost $850. It was a simple machine that drivers could depend on. Doctors bought the Model T. So did farmers. Americans loved the Model T. They wrote stories and songs about it. Thousands of Model T's were built in the first few years.

1What do we know about Henry Ford from Paragraph 1 ?

    A. He knew how to improve car’s parts.

    B. He produced the first car in the world.

    C. He improved others’ good ideas.

    D. He invented the first production line.

2Why did Henry Ford take part in the 1901 car race?

    A. To show off(炫耀) his driving skills.

    B. To draw public attention.

    C. To learn about new technology.

    D. To raise money for his new company.

3What was Henry Ford's dream according to the text?

    A. Producing cars for common people.

    B. Building very fast racing cars .

    C. Designing(设计) more car models.

    D. Starting more companies.

4Why did Henry Ford become famous all over the United States ?

    A. Because he started a new company.

    B. Because he built the first car.

    C. Because his car won the race.

    D. Because he drove his car so well.

5What can we infer about the car before Model T from the passage ?

    A. The car was not invented until Model T.

    B. The car was big enough for a whole family.

    C. The car was very expensive.

    D. Americans didn’t want cars.

  • 26、A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes something that we do almost without thinking. Some of them are thought to be bad habits. People spend countless hours and dollars each year trying to get rid of these bad habits but often fail. Why? Change is hard work and_________________However, there is still some advice for you to follow.

First, look at why you do it. In other words, what’s the result of doing this thing? If your bad habit is shouting at people when you are unhappy or under pressure, what do you get from it? It may make you feel a little better for the moment. Or maybe you have a bad habit of leaving your homework undone. The result could be that you get more time to spend on the Internet!

Next, take a look on the other hand. What are you losing because of your habit? Shouting at other people is a bad habit because it makes people around you feel bad and unhappy. Leaving your homework undone is a bad habit because you may be punished by your teacher. Having more Internet time means that you are losing the chance to learn the things that you need to learn. When you think that way, you’ll find that it’s not wise to keep your bad habit! Now it is time to make a decision. What will you choose? I’m sure you will choose to do what you think is more important.

1From the first paragraph we know that __________.

    A. a habit is a terrible thing that we can never change

    B. people take countless hours and dollars to get rid of habits

    C. none of the people who try to break bad habits are successful

    D. though it is difficult, we can still do something about our bad habits

    A. it is not easy to get rid of bad habits

    B. there is a long way and a short way

    C. something dangerous may happen

    D. we must cut it in a short time.

3The main purpose of this passage is to __________.

    A. introduce and describe   B. complain(埋怨)and disagree

    C. explain(解释) and advise   D. discuss and argue(争论)
