24、Dear Karen,
As you probably know, it’s my sister Suzie’s 16th birthday in a week. We’re planning a surprise party for her. Julie’s going to pick her up from school as usual on Friday but she’s not taking her home. She’s bringing her to the Palace Hotel, the big modern one near the station. We’re having a meal there and we’ve also hired (租用) the ballroom (舞厅) for a party in the evening. I hope you can come!
All her friends from school are coming and quite a few of the people from our village, too. Of course, Mum and Dad are coming up from England and I’ve managed to persuade (说服) our other sister, Marie, to come over from Australia. She’s bringing her kids with her, too.
After the party we’re going to have another one on Saturday! Well, not really a party. We’re inviting the family and close friends (that includes you) for a meal at the house. If the weather is nice, we’d like to have a barbecue in the garden. Julie’s going to make a special cake for Suzie.
Anyway, we hope to make it a really special weekend for Suzie. On Sunday we’re all going for a walk in the country. You know how she loves walking and we’re all going to need a bit of exercise after all that lovely food. We’re hoping to go up to the lake. Marie said she wanted her kids to feed the ducks just like Suzie and she did when they were very young. I’m sure Suzie will love that too.
It would be great if you could come over for the weekend. We would all love to see you.
Let me know as soon as you can.
Best,
David

27、 Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head because a study has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to fear a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting (收缩) and pumping (输送) blood around their bodies, compared with the point the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain reacts to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: “Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures.”
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions (反应) to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Therefore our hearts can also influence what we see and what we don’t see—and guide whether we sec fear.”
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner (扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart chances a person’s feeling of fear.
“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain “speak” to each other to change our feelings and reduce (减少) fear,” Dr Garfinkel said.
“We hope that by knowing more about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”
