四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In 1963 a Lancaster bomber crashed on Wallis Island, a remote place in the South Pacific, a long way west of Samoa. The plane wasn’t too badly damaged, but over the years, the crash was forgotten and the wreck remained undisturbed. Then in 1989, twenty-six years after the crash, the plane was accidentally rediscovered in an aerial survey of the island. By this time, a Lancaster bomber in reasonable condition was rare and worth rescuing. The French authorities had the plane packaged and moved in parts back to France. Now a group of enthusiasts are going to have the plane restored. It has four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, but the group will need to have only three of them rebuilt. Imagine their surprise and delight when they broke open the packing cases and found that the fourth engine was sweet as honey — still in perfect condition. • 25、American people like to say “Thank you” whenever others help them. People of many other countries do so, too. It is a very good habit.

You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table. When someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Thank you” is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives.

“Excuse me” is another short sentence they use. When you hear someone say “Excuse me” behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you without touching you. It’s not polite to interrupt(打断) others while they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first, and then begin talking. You should also do so when you want to cough or make any unpleasant noise before others.

Let’s all learn to say “Thank you” and “Excuse me”.

【1】What is the main idea of this passage?

    A. American people use “Thank you” widely to show they are polite.

  • 26、Your handshake is a part of your first impression (印象). Do you want your handshake to say good things about you? Here are some ways to help you learn how to shake hands correctly.

Know who to start. The person in a higher position or who is older should be the first one to reach out a hand. For example, if you are interviewed for a job, the interviewer should be the one to take the lead.

Don’t offer an unannounced handshake. If you offer someone your hand when they aren’t paying attention, they may not shake hands with you. It doesn’t mean the person doesn’t want to shake your hand. So start with a greeting to let others know that you’re here.

The handshake often lasts about 2 to 5 seconds. Most people don’t spend more time shaking hands. If the other person holds your hand for more than five seconds, politely withdraw (撤回) your hand.

Don’t show a sweaty (出汗的) hand. If you hand someone a sweaty hand, you may make them uncomfortable. Before shaking their hand, dry your own hand. If you’re holding a drink, hold it in your left hand so that it won’t make your right hand wet or sweaty because we often use our right hand to shake hands with others.

Shake hands in an up-and-down direction. Don’t go back and forward or side to side. Don’t swing the other person’s hand more than three times. It may make the other person uncomfortable.

【1】What should you do before shaking hands with others?

    A.Hit them on the back.

B.Greet them politely to get their attention.

C.Ask them to wash their hands first.

D.Tell them how to shake hands.

  • 27、Once a king got two nice falcons (猎鹰) from his son. He had never seen such beautiful falcons before. He loved them so much and he ordered the best falconer (训鹰人) to train them to fly.

After several months, the king came to see how the training was going on. He found that one falcon had already been able to fly high in the sky, while the other was staying on the branch (树枝) of a tree quietly, just keeping still.

The king called all his falconers together and ordered them to try every way they could to make the other falcon fly. But none of them succeeded. One day, while the king was taking a walk in the forest, an idea came to his mind. Maybe someone who knew the natural environment well could solve this problem. He sent for a farmer who lived in the forest into his palace to train it at once.

The next morning, the king saw the other falcon flying above in the sky freely. “It is unbelievable!” shouted the king.“ How could you make it happen?”

The farmer replied, “It’s very easy. I just cut off the branch where the falcon rested.”

It is always the same to human beings. We all have “two flying wings” in our hearts as well, but we often seem not to notice them and stay where we are just for safety and comfort. We won’t realize we can fly so high and freely until the “branch” we are resting on breaks.

【1】What did the king do after he got the two falcons?

    A.

B.He kept them on the branch of a tree.

C.He sent them to a farmer in the forest.

D.He made the best falconer train them to fly.

E.He set them free and let them fly in the sky.

【2】Why did the king call all his falconers together?

A.Because he wanted to get more falcons.

B.Because he wanted the other falcon to fly.

C.Because he wanted them to see his falcons.

D.Because he wanted to know more about his falcons.

【3】Which question could best help us find out the writer’s purpose?

A.Did the writer want us to keep falcons?

B.Did the writer want us to train falcons?

C.Did the writer want us to stay in a comfort area?

D.Did the writer want us to move out of the comfort area?
