四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I would like to talk to you about one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I was born and raised there and now I visit it from time to time. My family moved to the city, so I only go back to see friends or to camp and fish.

I grew up in a small town called Antonito Co. It is surrounded by mountains. So camping is a big source of happiness in the valley. There are so many beautiful places to hike.

The town itself is very small. It is said that if you blink (眨眼) when you’re going through it, you’ll miss it. This has some truth in it considering the size of the town. We have one grocery store (杂货店), a tiny post office , and a tiny bank. There are also a few gas stations, bars, some excellent restaurants, a small hospital and of course several schools. However, for clothing and shoes, you have to drive thirty miles to Alamosa to shop there.

Everyone in the town is nice and we all know each other. The crime rate () is zero unless you count some weekend fights that break out because some people drink too much. The classes in school are small, so you get a lot of attention from the teacher.

You’re probably wondering why I don’t live there. Well, I can’t get a job there. A lot of the businesses are family-owned. And they never fire(解雇) their employees. So the employees work there usually until they retire(退休). Most people have to go to other places to get a job.

1What can you find in the writer’s hometown?

    a. bank

    b. a post office

    c. some gas stations and bars

    B. It is great fun for the writer to go camping in the valley.

    C. It’s common to see some drunken people in the writer’s hometown.

    D. The writer moved to the city because he didn’t like his hometown.

3We can learn from the last paragraph that in the writer’s hometown   .

    A. not many job chances are provided

    B. employees don’t make much money

    C. most people live a very hard life

    D. only the old still live there

Manners are important in every country. But people have different ideas about their manners. What is good in one country may not be welcomed in another.

Chinese people are surprised to know the fact that an Englishman doesn’t stop to talk and shake hands with his friend in the street. They just say hello to each other and then pass on.

English people think that we Chinese end our visits to friends all of a sudden. They usually begin to show that they want to go 15 or 20 minutes before they leave their friend’s house. And they do this two or three times within 20 minutes.

Because of these differences, perhaps the most suitable advice for the overseas, no matter what country he is visiting, is to follow the old proverb “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

  • 26、Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no” or “we don’t know”. But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人;生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size — the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.

【1】Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?

A.There were not any smaller planets.

B.The Milky Way didn’t exist at that time.

C.The astronomers were not interested in them.

D.There were not any powerful telescopes.

【2】What is the best title for Paragraph 2?

A.The Age and Size of Earth

    B.Why Intelligent Life Might Exist

    C.Our Galaxy: The Milky Way

D.Earth: The Only Planet with Intelligent Life

【3】What does the underlined phrase life forms in the last paragraph mean?

    A.messages

    B.tools

    C.intelligent beings

    D.radio signals

Have you ever been to Beijing? There are many ways to tour the Chinese capital. Like any great city in the world, a four-day tour is p1to cover the greatest sites. You can walk slowly around the city by having meals or coffee breaks so that you don't feel rushed and will enjoy the moments comfortably. H2are my suggestions.

Any visit to Beijing is incomplete without a hike on the Great Wall. So on the first day, I a3 climbing the Great Wall. Since Badaling is always full of people, you can go to Juyong Pass, which is less c4  but still wonderful. You can enjoy the b5 and take photos on the way. The next day, you can take the axis(轴线) tour through the center of Beijing. That means you can visit the Temple of Heaven, Tian'anmen and the Forbidden City in just one day. Perhaps you are tired but it is w6 a visit. After two days’ sightseeing, you can s7 down if your feet may ache. On the third day, it’s a good idea to walk along Wangfujing Street. Also, you can enjoy nice food and watch art shows at Nanluoguxiang and Shichahai. On the last day, if you are still energetic, v8 the Summer Palace in the northwest is the best choice.
