In 1989, an 8.2 earthquake almost destroyed America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. A father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

After the unforgettable scare, he remembered the promise he had made to his son, "No matter what happens, I'll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless but he kept remembering his promise to his son.

Remembering his son's classroom would be in the back right comer of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins. As he was digging, other helpless parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying, "It's too late! They're all dead! You can't help! Go home! Come on! Face reality. There's nothing you can do!"

To each parent he replied with one line, "Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The firefighter leader showed up and tried to pull him off the ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out. Explosions are happening everywhere. You're in danger. We'll take care of it. Go home." This loving father asked, "Are you going to help me now?" The police came and said, "You're angry, worried and it's over. You are making others in danger. Go home. We'll handle it!" He replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.

He went on alone because he needed to know for himself, "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for eight hours ...12 hours ...24 hours ...36 hours ... then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son's voice. He screamed his son's name, "Armand!" He heard back, "Dad?! It's me, Dad! I told the other children not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you would save me and when you saved me, they'd be saved. You promised, no matter what happens, you will always be there for me! You did it, Dad!" "What's going on there? How is it?" the father asked. "There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We're scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you're here. When the building fell down, it made a triangle, and it saved us."

"Come out, boy!" "No, Dad! Let the other kids out first because I know you'll get me! No matter what happens, I know you'll always be there for me!"

  • 27、   One day, a boy was playing in a garden. He was running after butterflies and trying to catch them. He was very happy to see the colorful flowers.

Then he saw a frog skipping and jumping. As he ran behind the frog, it jumped into the pond.

A cow was also eating grass in the garden. He saw how the cow was chewing (咀嚼) grass. A fly then came there and buzzed (发出嗡嗡声) over the cow. The cow swung her tail to make the fly move away. The child clapped and laughed.

The boy was enjoying the beauty of nature. He said, "Nature is wonderful. Its beauty attracts everyone."

His mother asked him, "What is the matter? Why are you crying?" The boy said, "The thorn of the rose pierced my finger while I was plucking it and now I feel serious pain."

His mother said, "It is your mistake. You should not have tried plucking the flower. The flowers are meant to be seen and not to be plucked. Besides, natural beauty should never be harmed. One should not interfere with the natural processes. Instead, we should help to keep the balance of the nature."

The boy said, "I will always follow what you have just told, Mama."

  • 29、Do You Prefer to Eat at Restaurants?

When it comes to eating, people are usually in two different minds. Some prefer to eat at a restaurant while others would rather prepare and have their meals at home. Both choices have their own advantages and disadvantages.

First of all, not having to cook is an obvious advantage of dining at restaurants over having home-cooked meals. Secondly, restaurants usually provided a much wider range (范围) of ______ compared to the number of dishes an average person can prepare at home. Such a wider menu may get people to try out different dishes, which can’t be achieved easily if they cook at home. Moreover, you don’t need to do the wash-up after you are done eating when dining at restaurants. However, such advantages come at a cost. Eating at restaurants too often costs a lot money. Therefore, it is not a(n) ______ decision for most people.

On the opposite, cooking your own meals at home is cheaper. Of course, this requires more time and effort. You need to buy and cook the ingredients on your own and ______ afterwards, but it has some advantages. For instance, home cooking allows people to prepare food that fits their own ______ and is a way of improving their cooking skills.

Personally, I enjoy cooking ______, especially when I’m cooking for someone else instead of myself. What’s more, I think many restaurants’ food portions (饭菜的一份) are not enough for a ______, healthy person. Because of this, even though there may be some moments when a restaurant meal would be preferable, I’d rather prepare and eat my own meals.
