1、 Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. 1.最严重的问题之一就是污染。Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. 2 .Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. 3. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. We call this kind of “quilt” smog(雾霾).
Many counties are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must clean their water before it is thrown away. And they mustn’t let dirty smoke go into the air.
4.我们需要做许多其他的事情。We can put waste things in the dustbin and do
not throw them on the ground. 5.We can go to work by bus or by bike instead of driving a car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must do something to help fight pollution.

24、 Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid is used to grilling guests on the sofa every morning, but she is cooking up a storm in her latest role -- showing families how to prepare delicious and nutritious meals on a tight budget.
In Save Money: Good Food, she visits a different home each week and with the help of chef Matt Tebbutt offers top tips on how to reduce food waste, while preparing recipes for under £5 per family a day. 25、 At some point in life, many people experience a mental(精神)problem. While most people get over it,for others it doesn't go away easily.
The WHO says that about 20 percent teenagers around the world experience mental illness. It's thought that the number of teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2020.It will become one of the main causes of diseases, and even death.
In China, the picture isn't bright, cither. About one tenth of teenagers under the age of 17 have a mental health challenge.
The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said.
A research center in Oxford University says that young people today have big stresses at school. For example, they experience bullying(欺凌). Online, young people often see "messages about perfection" and this causes the young "great uncertainty about their futures",says the centre.
Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don't ask for help with their mental problems. They fear that others will think less of them if they say that they are in mental trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. And in the UK, over three quarters of young people believe their mental problems have a social stigma. It is reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn't ask for help if they developed a mental problem.
Young people who don't ask for help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Elaine Peng warned that. "If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever."

26、I’ll never forget one summer day in 1975. On that day my mother suddenly died because of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer came to my house to ask for my father’s permission(允许)for the hospital to use Mother’s valve(心脏瓣膜). I was greatly surprised. I ran into the house in tears. At 14, I just couldn’t understand why people would take apart(分解)a person I loved. . But my father told him, “Yes.”
“How can you let them do that to her?” I cried at him.
“Linda,” he said quietly, putting his arms around me, “the greatest present you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago that if we can make a person’s life better after we died, our death will have meaning.’’
The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.
Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1996 my father became seriously ill. With a smile he told me that when he died, he wanted to donate(捐赠)whatever was in good condition(状况), especially his eyes.
My father died and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, my daughter said, “Mum, I’m so proud of what you did for Grandpa.” At that moment I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes. What he left behind sparkled(闪烁)in my daughter’s eyes-pride.
