  • 25、“No man is an island” is a well-known line from John Donne’s Devotion written more than three hundred years ago. Even now people still agree with him. No one can live a completely isolated life. Without other people life became empty and sad. We all need friends.

For some of us though making friends is not difficult feeling shy we may not want to make the first move. It is also difficult at times to keep the friends we already have.

There are many books about friendship but Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence (影响) People written in 1936 is the most famous. This “how to” book about getting along with other people became a best-seller. It was later put into 28 languages.

Dale Carnegie’s advice (劝告) seems to be simple but can his advice help you? Do you need to change the way you act? Here is the list of advice from his book.

    1. Be friendly and polite.

Always greet with a smile. Begin with “excuse me” or “would you please” when you want to ask somebody. Remember to say “thank you” and try to be as helpful as you can.

    2. Go out of your way to be nice.

Find some time to do special things for other people. Making some soup for a sick neighbour may seem like a little thing to you but it will make your neighbour feel a lot better.

    3. Remember names.

They say that the sweetest music to a person’s ears is the sound of his or her own name.

    4. Be open-minded.

Try to understand other people’s ways and ideas and learn something from them.

When someone is talking to you look at him or her listen carefully and say something when necessary.

    Ladies and gentlemen,

I am Peng Liyuan. It gives me a great pleasure to join you for this important initiative as the UN marks its 70th anniversary.

Education is very close in my heart. My father grew up in a very small village in China. In those days, not many villagers could read. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help, many people learned to write their own names. With his help many people learned to read newspapers for the first time. With his help, many women were able to teach their children how to read.

As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it. After generations of hard work, China has come a long way in education. I myself am a beneficiary ( 受益者) of that progress. Otherwise I would never become a professor of musical…

Many years ago my father made a small difference in his village. Together we can make a big difference in the world. I was once asked about my Chinese dream. I said I hope all children especially girls can have access to good education. This is my Chinese dream. I believe one day education first will no longer be a dream, it will be a reality enjoyed by every young woman on this planet.

    Thank you very much.

  • 27、We usually think that garbage is useless and dirty. However, an art exhibition in 2019 proves that”useless” things can actually be helpful.

Dear Pretty Rubbish, an art event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN) and digital media art company Blackbow, was held in Beijing. It looked at wasteful garbage and asked questions about the relationship between our lifestyles and our garbage.

“We hope that everyone who visited the show can think about how ‘useless things’ are produced, why they are tossed out, and whether ‘useless things’ are really useless”, said Cao Yujia, the design director at Blackbow.

Artists Zhou Yuxuan and Liu Yifan collected nylon cable ties, LED lights and plastic bottles from designers’ workshops to create a work where plastics, in the shape of cells, “grow” in a comer. There, the lights blink(闪烁) regularly just like “breathing”. When people walk near it, the work responds by showing light patterns, as if communicating with the visitors.

Speaking about the work, Zhou said: “It’s like some kind of communication between humans and plastics.”

Plastic has a life longer than almost any creature, taking centuries to break down. Though people think plastics damage the environment, they are a big part of our daily lives. “So we want to ask the question: Although the damage continues, is there a way for humans to reconcile (和解) with plastics?” said Zhou.

【1】Which phrase can take the place of the underlined phrase “tossed out”?

    A.worked out

    B.used up

    C.thrown away

    D.put off

【2】Which of the following might Zhou agree with?

    A.Useless things are really useless.

B.Artists should make works from garbage.

C.Plastics should be left to break down on their own.

D.Humans should find a better way to deal with plastics.

【3】Which word can best describe the art event?

    A.Creative

    B.Wasteful

    C.Balanced

    D.Awful

【4】Which is the best title of the text?

A.Try new ways to reduce garage

    B.Plastic pollution around us

    C.Live peacefully with “garbage”

D.Communications between human beings and nature
