25、Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by travelling west from Europe. In order to find Asia, they had to find a way past South America. The man who finally found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean was Ferdinand Magellan (麦哲伦).
Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending very cold winter on the coast (海岸) of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan’s Strait (海峡). In November 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.
They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines (菲律宾), men were dying of hunger. While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle (战斗). The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. Many of you have probably had this experience: You get on a train and are ready to take a nap (打盹) or read a book, only to find that the passenger in front of you is watching a TV show on his tablet (平板电脑) without headphones (耳机). The child next to you won’t stop crying. And the old lady behind you talks on her phone during the whole trip.
Wish the train could be less noisy? There might be a solution for you. The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, one of China’s busiest high-speed rail lines, will have “quiet” carriages (车厢) starting from Dec 23, Xinhua reported.
In quiet carriages, onboard videos (车载视频) will be muted (静音) and announcements (公告) will be made at a lower volume (音量). Doors at the ends of the carriage will be kept closed to reduce noise from other carriages, CGTN noted. Train attendants (乘务员) will be responsible for making sure that passengers remain quiet and follow the rules.
Passengers who are willing to obey (遵守) the rules can choose the quiet carriages when booking their tickets, according to China’s national railway operator (铁路运营商).
Some people have pointed out that this kind of quiet environment should be offered in all carriages. They say that having quiet carriages might give people the impression that they don’t need to be quiet in non-quiet carriages.
While some internet users are in favor of the new service, it has also sparked (引发) discussion about just how quiet travelers should be in quiet carriages. Many people have raised questions such as “What if I snore (打呼噜)?” and “Can we talk to our travel companions (同伴) if we need to?”

Everyone knows animals are our friends. So we should be friendly to them. But some people kill the rare animals, such as pandas, golden monkeys and so on in order to get money. It will cause these animals to disappear soon.
Perhaps the most famous rare animal is panda. Twenty years ago it was nearly extinct (灭绝的). Now, its n【1】 are growing again. It is even a symbol for wildlife conservation (保存,保护). But many other species have not been as l【2】 as the panda. Some are already extinct. Today, many more are in serious danger. This is because man hurts them and d【3】 their habitat. Is it too late to save wildlife?
A serious habitat problem arises (出现) because of pollution or o【4】 new lands. Habitats take many years to grow again. When the wild animals lose their homes, the natural balance is also changed. If one animal, bird, or insect d【5】, all the others suffer, too.
This is what is happening in the forests of South America. Africa and Asia. Habitats and animals are disappearing in Europe, too. Since 1947 in Britain, for example, 50% of the woods, low wet land, and 95% of meadows have disappeared. And what has taken the place of these green, natural places? Houses, farms, cities, streets, roads, and factories. Because of this (and pollution too) several British species are dying.
Then, what is the s【6】 ? There is only one way to save wild animals and wild habitats – conservation. This means man should protect animals in danger by establishing law, opening more national parks, building fewer new roads, planting more forests, and cutting pollution. If not, many wild animals will soon have just one habitat—the zoo!/
If everyone is involved in the p【7】 of wild life, we’re sure man will be a good friend of animals rather than their enemy.
