四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Are you preparing a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the book. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In  this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

1According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?

A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels. B.Physical exercise helps us think better. C.The brain needs special mental exercise.   D.The more exercise, the bigger brain.

2The underlined word “trace” most probably means   .

A.to find the result of something B.to seek the details of something

C.to follow the example of something D.to find the origin of something

3Why is yoga suggested for seniors?

A.It does good to the bones of old people. B.It does not increase the heart rate. C.It includes learning new actions.   D.It can be done in groups.

4What is main idea of this passage?

A.How exercise makes people strong. B.How to get good scores on a test. C.How exercise helps the brain.   D.How the brain can change.

  • 25、   In students' daily talks, celebrities(名人)are usually a hot topic, including their dress, behavior, families and other personal things. Then, is it a celebrity's job to be a good role model? Please read the following students' debate.

It's a celebrity's job to be a good role model because people usually look up to stars. If a celebrity drinks and smokes, his fans will follow him because they look up to the celebrity so much. If a celebrity's lifestyle is inappropriate for kids, then their parents should be more careful about what they let their kids see.

A celebrity doesn't have to try to be a good role model. They are famous because they worked hard at what they love for a living. They should, however, try to make good choices for themselves, not their fans. Lots of stars have to post apology(道歉)letters after being caught doing bad things. It's good, but if the only reason they do is to win back their fans, it's not good.

I think everyone should try to be a good role model, even if you are not a celebrity! You can still be a role model to your sisters and brothers, a younger neighbour, or anyone. But I think celebrities should be very good, because they are role models for so many people!

Although it is a wonderful thing to be a good role model, that's not what the celebrities must do. They are famous because they love what they do and are good at it. Being a role model is never in the job. If the celebrity knows they are affecting the young people, they should try hard to set a good example.

    Pros(正方)

Is it a celebrity's job to be a good role model?

    Cons(反方)

1Which of the following reasons is NOT from the pros?

A.People look up to the celebrities.

B.Everyone should try to be a good role model.

C.Celebrities get much love and support from fans.

D.Celebrities are models for many people.

2Which of the following is TRUE according to their words?

A.It is easy for stars to win back fans.

B.Stars may sometimes do something wrong.

C.Family members should encourage kids to be stars.

D.Even though a celebrity makes mistakes, young people should follow him.

  • 26、   A poor boy once went to a ragged(破旧的)school, where his face was well washed. When he returned home, the neighbors looked at him in surprise.

They said, "That looks like Tom Rogers, and yet it can't be, for he is so clean."

After a while, his mother looked at him, and seeing that his face was so clean, she thought that her own face was dirty, and she washed it at once.

The father soon came home from his work, and, seeing his wife and his son so clean, he thought that his face was dirty, and so he followed their example.

Father, mother and son being clean, the mother began to think that the room looked dirty, so she went down on her knees to scrub(擦洗)the floor clean.

A woman lived next door. Seeing so great a change in her neighbors, she thought that her face and her room were very dirty, so she, too, quickly set about cleaning them.

This story shows how two houses and their families were made tidy and comfortable, simply by the example of the clean face of one ragged school boy.

Children, as well as grow-up people, should always set a good example. We never know how much good may be done in that way, nor can we tell how much harm results from a bad example.

    根据短文内容判断正、误。(正确的涂“A”,错误的涂“B”

1The poor boy got his face washed at home.

2When the mother saw that his son's face was so clean, she thought that her own face was dirty, and washed it right away.

3The boy's father thought the room dirty, so he went down on his knees to clean the floor.

4Seeing such a great change in her neighbors, the woman neighbor thought that her face and her room were very dirty.

5From the passage, we know we should always set a good example for others.

  • 27、“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).

For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus(关注)on subjects that are tested more often.

However, learning music is useful in many ways.

When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.

Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck did well in playing the piano.

1Some schools in the US cut music classes, because ______.

    A. they were too difficult to learn   B. students in the US weren’t interested in music

    C. the schools wanted to control budgets   D. there weren’t enough music teachers in the US

2In Paragraph 2, what does the underlined word “them” refer to(指代)?

    A. Fired teachers.   B. Public schools.   C. Parents in Chicago.   D. Students in Chicago.

3What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

    A. Playing the piano needs people to see music notes.

    B. Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.

    C. Decoding music notes is needed while we are playing music.

    D. Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.

4How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage?

    A. One.   B. Two.   C. Three.   D. Four.

5What’s the writer’s opinion according to this passage?

    A. Music is as simple as it looks.   B. Music classes should be cut in some schools.

    C. Music is a big part of our lives.   D. Music isn’t a very important life skill for us.
