四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、A popular saying goes, Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. However, thats not really true. Words have the power to cheer us up or let us down. It doesnt matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves the positive and negative (正面和负面) influences are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. Were usually too shy to admit(承认) it, though. In fact, we really shouldnt be because more and more scientists believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This self-talk helps us make ourselves active, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. It is said that as much as 77% of self-talk is likely to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying Good job!

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the influence they will have. But we should realize that our words cause certain influence in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the salesperson will probably answer in a similar manner. Otherwise you may get into trouble.

Words have power because of their lasting influences. Many of us feel sorry for something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesnt pass this test, then its better left unsaid.

Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-confidence and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to cure? The choice is ours.

【1】There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because ________.

    A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

    B. talking to ourselves always gives us courage

    C. we may gain quite a few advantages of talking to ourselves

    D. it does no harm to have self-talk when we are alone

【2】The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also ________ in time.

    A. remind ourselves   B. praise ourselves

    C. make ourselves relaxed   D. give ourselves fun

【3】In which column(版面) of the newspaper can you most likely read this passage?

    A. News. B. Nature. C. Health. D. Culture.

  • 25、Have you heard about the periodic table (元素周期表) lately? Well, there’s some big news about this special table, but first, remember that the periodic table is used for all the elements(元素), or things that make up our world.

Elements are all around us. Iron is one of the most common elements found on the earth. You probably know the element oxygen (氧), which is the element that we breathe in all the time. And elements can combine (结合) to make new things like H2O. This is hydrogen (氢) and oxygen put together, also known as water! Learning about these things helps us better understand the world we live in.

But have you ever noticed something missing in the periodic table? There were already 114 elements. But the seventh row of the table was not finished, until now!

In December, scientists from the IUPAC(国际纯粹与应用化学联合会) found the four elements that were missing. They are elements 113, 115, 117 and 118.

“To scientists, this is of greater value than an Olympic gold medal,” Ryoji Noyori, a Nobel honored chemist said.

The new elements are heavy metals and were made in lab. These kinds of elements can’t be found in nature. Scientists are still looking for ways to use these elements, and other elements in the eighth row in our daily lives.

Scientists have been working on this for 10 years, but the work is not done. Now they will prepare to look for “element 119 and beyond”. But for now, be mindful (留心的) when you read your science books because the periodic table might be outdated (过时的).

【1】 In Paragraph 2, the writer mainly talks about_________.

    A. examples of some common elements

    B. the importance of oxygen

    C. how elements make new things

    D. how to learn about elements

    C. elements 113, 115, 117, 118

    D. elements 113, 115, 117, 119

【3】The underlined word “beyond” means ________ in the last paragraph.

    A.更前面 B.更后面 C.更上面 D.更里面

【4】Which of the following about the new elements is NOT true?

    A. They are heavy metals.

    B. They were made in labs.

    C. They can’t be found in nature.

    D. They are widely used in our daily lives.

  • 27、A poor boy once went to a ragged (破旧的) school, where his face was well washed. When he returned home, the neighbors looked at him in surprise.

They said, “That looks like Tom Rogers, and yet it can’t be, for he is so clean.” After a while, his mother looked at him, seeing that his face was so clean. She thought that her own face was dirty, and she washed it at once. The father soon came home from his work, seeing his wife and his son so clean, he thought that his face was dirty, and so he followed their example.

Father, mother and son being clean, the mother began to think that the room looked dirty, so she went down on her knees to scrub (擦洗) the floor clean. A woman lived next door. Seeing so great a change in her neighbors, she thought that her face and her room were very dirty; so she, too, quickly set about cleaning them.

This story shows how two houses and their families were made tidy and comfortable, simply by the example of the clean face of one ragged school boy. Children, as well as grow-up people, should always set a good example. We never know how much good may be done in that way, nor can we tell how much harm results from a bad example.

    根据短文内容判断正、误。(正确的涂”A”,错误的涂”B”)
