21、 It's getting hotter and hotter outside. Summer is already here! Summer means high temperature, more outdoor activities and all kinds of fruit and vegetables. How can we stay fit in this exciting season? Here are some good suggestions:
Eat and drink properly
What is healthy to eat in summer? Fresh and light food. Fish can be a good choice. It can keep your body energetic and help fight against the burning sun. Another good choice is colourful fruit and vegetables. They not only please your eyes, but are full of healthy chemicals(化学物质). Tomatoes can help protect your skin against sunburn. Blueberries are good for your brain and eyes. The more colour, the better!
With all those summertime activities, you will be thirsty. What to drink? Water. Water has zero calories(卡路里) and is the perfect drink to stop your thirst(口渴). Try not to drink too many energy drinks, sports drinks and soda drinks which have lots of sugar and caffeine(咖啡因) in them.
Stay active and cool
Summer is a great season to enjoy outdoor activities and play. It's also a good time to lose weight. If you are lucky enough to be near a body of water, try water sports like swimming, surfing, water skiing and so on. These sports keep you cool and active at the same time. You'll have no problem beating the heat and keeping fit as well.
Be careful of the sunshine
Summer allows us more chances to get outside, but it also means more possibilities to get burnt by the sunshine. If you are going outside, keep away from the sun when it's the strongest—usually between 11 am and 3 pm. If you have to stay in the sun for a long time, sunscreen(防晒霜), a big hat and a longsleeve jacket will be necessary.

22、These days so many things are going digital, and books are too. People can buy e-books or cheap books online. This means that some bookstores have a hard time staying open. This isn’t a new problem, but things are finally starting to turn around.
Bookstore sales in the US went up 2.5 percent from 2014 to 2015, according to the US Census Bureau. They have found success by trying new things like holding events, adding a coffee shop and food and creating a fun experience for book lovers. “That’s what small bookstores have to offer,” Nicole Sullivan, owner of Denver’s Book Bar, told the Denver Post, “a more personalized(个性化的)experience and a sense of community.”
Also, bookstores are trying to bring in new shoppers in cool ways. The Shakespeare and Co. bookstore in New York is adding the Espresso Book Machine, which can print any book you want in five minutes at the store. This special machine can help people search for books easily.
And sometimes, if you can’t beat them, it’s okay to join them. Many stores like Second Story Books in Washington, DC, use online bookstores like Amazon to their advantage. They have two bookstores. People can pick out new books they like and enjoy themselves in the actual bookstores(实体店). And they also sell books on Amazon to make more money.
While bookstores still face difficulties, it seems there are ways for them to succeed.

23、
People have used pigeons to carry messages to one another for hundreds of years. In the 12th century, the royal palaces of Iraq and Syria included pigeon houses so the kings could be kept informed of their generals’ victories and defeats on the battlefield. In fact, pigeons were a common way to send messages right up through World War II.
Many countries, such as the United States, England, France, Germany, and Italy, in both World War I and World War II, used carrier pigeons. Not only were the birds often the fastest, most reliable way to send messages, they could also be used to reach soldiers far behind enemy lines, where radios and field telephone lines were useless. Since they could easily be released (释放) from airplanes or ships, every branch of the armed services used the birds. In World War II, more than 3,000 soldiers and 150 officers were needed to care for and train the tens of thousands of birds in the U.S. Pigeon Service.
Carrying messages could be a dangerous job. Some pigeons performed with such bravery that they became famous and were even awarded medals, such as England’s Dicken Medal of Gallantry. In a few cases, pigeons even became prisoners of war. In 1918 American forces captured a pigeon named Kaiser, which had been trained to fly special missions for Germany during battle. He was taken to America, where he lived to the age of 32. The most famous pigeon of all may have been Cher Ami. Stationed in France during World War I, he carried twelve important messages for American forces. On his last mission, though wounded, he carried a message that saved the lives of 194 American soldiers. For his extraordinary service, he was awarded the French “Croix de Guerre.”
Carrier pigeons are a slightly different breed (品种) from the kind of pigeons you see on city streets. They are much thinner and taller, with longer legs. Many people find carrier pigeons ugly because of their big wattle, a bent buildup of skin on the beak(鸟嘴); however, people who raise pigeons often enjoy this strange appearance and consider carriers the best of their breed.
Today, modern communication methods can carry information from one place to another hundreds of times faster than a pigeon could do. However, few people would argue with the fact that carrier pigeons—especially those that served in the military—have earned their place in history. Stories about brave pigeons such as Cher Ami, President Wilson, and Colonel’s Lady have the power to inspire us as no fax machine or high-speed Internet connection could ever do.
