21、We all dream about things that we would like to do and things we hope to achieve in the future. But are everybody’s dreams the same? Here are some of the findings of a survey about hopes and dreams, and thousands of students across China took part in it.
What are the hopes of teenagers?
We received several different answers to the question: What would you like to do after finishing your education? It seems some students would like to start work as soon as possible so that they can help provide better lives for their parents. Other students hope to continue studying after finishing school and to go to university. Although money is important, many teenagers said they wanted to do jobs they enjoyed. According to the survey, the most popular choice of job is computer programming.
What are the dreams of teenagers?
Teenagers have all kinds of dreams. Some are more realistic(现实的)than others. For example, many students said they would like to be volunteers if Beijing could hold the World Cup, maybe working as translators or tour guides. And quite a few said they dreamed of going to the Moon one day. According to the survey, less realistic dreams are also common, but many students reported that they were willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. Quite a few dreamed of becoming famous, perhaps famous sportspeople or singers. Some said they’d like to go on exciting trips. One student said she’d love to sail across the Pacific Ocean. And then there are dreams that are impossible—three students said they’d like to be able to fly!
Conclusion
It was clear from the survey that teenagers have similar hopes. It seems that most students hope to have a good education and find a good job. Besides, students dreamed of very different things: good things, and even crazy things. It is very important to dream, so hold on your dreams and one day they may just come true.

23、I have been very lucky to make many trips to China. Though I have had some trouble with the language, I have never had a problem I couldn’t solve. As a native English speaker (土生土长的说英语的人), I can go almost everywhere in the world and find someone to communicate with. I never thought that someone who speaks only Chinese would have a lot of trouble in my country.
Recently, the Li family that I had met in China moved to Canada. I met them at the airport. My wife and I made meals for them and showed them around where we live. Everything seemed to go smoothly (顺利地) for the first two days as we looked for a car for them, showed them the way to different stores and the nearest city, Victoria. Mr and Mrs Li have a two-year-old son and soon we became Nainai (Grandmother) and Yeye (grandfather). We were having a good time but we didn’t realize Mr Li can’t speak English.
Luckily, Mrs Li can speak very good English. Many people with Chinese backgrounds live near us. In fact, none of them speak Chinese, Mr Li can’t even buy a mobile phone without his wife’s help. He can’t talk to me, of course. By the third day, he felt lonely and worried. And on the fourth day, we decided to take them to a large Chinese community.
Now, we often visit them and they visit us too. Sometimes Mrs Li would still like to live near us but Mr Li cannot. I feel bad because he seems very nice and smart but I can’t talk with him. It seems that neither of us will learn the other’s language because of our ages. Maybe we will never have a friendly conversation. But we will think of each other as friends.

24、 Five years ago, my mother gave birth to a brother for me when I was 8. I have learned a lot from getting along with him.
After he was born, I almost became a babysitter. I had to amuse him after school. I would make faces and sing to him when he was crying. Sometimes I even carried him everywhere in our yard to refresh him while my parents were busy. What I liked to do best was to feed him when looking after him. How cute he was as he tasted his favorite food! My parents often praised me happily, "As an elder brother, you've made contributions to looking after your younger brother."
I have got happiness from sharing. When I was young, I was the only child in my family. I could get what I wanted from my parents and get my parents' whole love. I was a "Little Emperor". But now, as long as I get something good, I will share it with him. I remembered the year when he was three, he was fond of(喜欢) Rubik's cubes(魔方). I bought one for him with my lucky money as a birthday present. When he got the toy, he was so happy that he laughed, hugged me and said, "Brother, I love you!"
Thanks for spending these years together with my family. It has taught me what responsibility(责任) means, what unselfishness(无私) means and what friendship means. Not only should I look after myself, but also I should pay attention to my family and my friends.
