  • 22、Finding the Owner

"It's mine," said Fred, showing a pocketknife with a shining blade (刀片) "Just what I've always wanted. "And he turned it over and over with the look of satisfaction on his face.

"I guess I know who owns it," said Tom, looking at it carefully.

"I guess you don't. It isn't Mr. Raymond's," Fred replied quickly.

"I know. Mr. Raymond's is twice as large," said Tom, going on with his drawing.

Tom's doubt was taking away Fred's enjoyment. In fact, Fred was not comfortable with the knife at all, for he felt that he was having something that did not belong to him and he got worried. He even had serious thoughts of burning it, or hiding it, or giving it away; but a better plan hit him.

"Tom," said Fred, one day at break, "didn't you say that you knew who owned the knife?"

"Yes, I did. It looked like Doctor Perry's," Tom ran off to play with others, without giving the knife another thought.

It was Dr. Perry's ! Fred looked at his watch and realized he only had a little time, so he started quickly, and found the old gentleman getting ready to visit a patient. "Is this yours?" cried Fred, in breathless haste, holding up the cause of a week's anxiety.

"It was," said the doctor, "but I lost it the other day."

"I found it," said Fred, "and have felt like a thief ever since. Here, take it. I've got to run. "

"Hold on!" said the doctor. "I've got a new one, and you are quite welcome to this."

  • 24、   Did you go to Shanghai Disneyland Park last summer? Did you see those famous cartoon charactersDonald Duck was just one of them.

In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the film-maker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney's cartoon film for children. When Walter Disney heard Nash's voice, he said, "Stop! That's our duck!”

One year later, the duck appeared in the film. It was the now-famous Donald Duck. The wise little Duck Donald lived in an old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audiences liked him because he was lazy and greedy(贪婪的), and because he lost his temper(脾气)very easily. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody(伪善者), like Mickey.

In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons.

Clarence Nash died in February, 1985. But today's children can still see the old cartoons on the television and hear that famous voice.

1Why did Walter Disney choose Clarence Nash?

    A. Because he went to see Walter Disney.

    B. Because he had an unusual voice.

    C. Because he was a film maker.

    D. Because he loves the children.

2What’s Donald Duck like in the film?

    A. He is stupid with bad temper.

    B. He is wise, lazy and friendly to Mickey’s eight nephews.

    C. He is clever and greedy with bad temper.

    D. He is silly but hardworking.

3How long did Clarence Nash dub for(……配音) Donald Duck?

    A. For 52 years. B. For 42 years. C. For 33 years. D. For 23 years.

4Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. Walter Disney made Donald Duck film.

    B. Mickey Mouse is less popular than Donald Duck in the1930s.

    C. Clarence Nash became famous for an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film.

    D. Today's children can’t s see Donald Duck any more on TV.

5What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Clarence—A great voice.

    B. A cartoonist in America.

    C. The lovely Donald Duck.

    D. A wonderful Disneyland Park in Shanghai.
