21、 When we see babies or pets, we can’t help touching them gently to show our love. And they give happy feelings back to us. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.
A study in The Plants Journal shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes (基因), and even worse, it can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, an animal, or even plants touching each other in the wild, causes a big gene change in the plant.
In order to test the idea, the scientists did an experiment ( 实验) on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a brush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a result of the touch, the mitochondria ( 线粒体) in the plants were partly broken. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cells (细胞). The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is broken, the plants will lose lots of energy. The energy is very important for their growth. Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then the plant growth is slowed by 30 percent.”
Although the touching does have a strong influence (影响) on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. _________________________ Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants to fight against threats from animals or bad weather.
The findings of the research ( 研究) help us to have a better understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.

22、Do you use hand gestures(姿势) when you talk? Do you open your mouth and eyes wide when you are surprised? These are all examples of body language. How important can it be? Follow Teens and have a look.
Body language does not use words. It uses the movement or position of your body to show certain meanings. According to American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65 percent of communication is body language. In some cases you even express yourself without words. For example, if your friend asks you to join him in a picnic, you will give him an “OK” gesture to say “Yes, sounds great!” Sometimes, your words say one thing, but your body language says another. You may do things unconsciously(无意识地) like touching your face while telling a lie.
In different cultures, the same body language means different things. In the US, making eye contact(眼神交流) with someone means you are interested in what the person is saying. While in some Asian countries, it is rude to look into a person’s eyes during a conversation.
Sometimes, different body language expresses the same meaning. Take “hello” for example. French people kiss cheeks (脸颊) to say hello. Japanese people bow (鞠躬). Maoris in New Zealand, however, touch noses in greeting. What are you trying to say? Body language is important to teenagers. Understanding this language helps you to communicate better with others.

23、 The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water, or salt water which is not drinkable. Man can only drink and use the other 3%—fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources. But we cannot even use all of that. However, our need for water is becoming larger almost day by day. We should take steps to deal with this problem now and in this way we can avoid a serious worldwide water shortage later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewage system. From there it returns to the sea or runs into underground places.
But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we have to do, to make use of sea water in the world, is to remove the salt. If we take these steps we’ll be in no danger of drying up.

24、In only a few months, a disease has completely changed the world. Thousands of people have died and millions of people have fallen ill. For the rest of us, our way of life has become totally different.
From New York to London, the busiest pubs and theaters have been left empty. International flights are being canceled. People are working from home. These are all aimed at controlling the spread of the COVID-19. However, all of these changes have also led to another unexpected benefit: a drop in carbon emissions(碳排放). Compared with this time last year, levels of pollution in New York have been reduced by nearly 50 percent.
So will the COVID-19 turn out to save the environment?
Kimberly Nicholas is an environmental scientist in Sweden. To answer that question, she says, you have to find out why emissions have dropped. Take transport as an example. It makes up 23 percent of global carbon emissions. These emissions have fallen as people are staying at home. Nicholas says they will remain lowered until the COVID-19 is totally brought under control. But what will happen after this outbreak(爆发)is over?
“It’s hard to say,” Nicholas says. While staying at home, many people have realized the importance of family. In the short term, some people will still avoid travel and spend time with their families instead. However, some people are feeling bored after not being out for a long time. They are eager to return to their old habits and may even travel more often. If that happens, transport-related emissions could come back.
But Nicholas says she and many other scientists have seen hope. The outbreak of the COVID-19 shows that at the national and international level, if we need to take action, we can. When we look out for each other, we all can make a big difference.
【1】From New York to London, people are working from home in order to ________.
A.save time
B.make less carbon emissions
C.save money
D.control the spread of the COVID-19
【2】According to Kimberly Nicholas, will the COVID-19 save the Earth in the end?
A.Yes, it will save the Earth in the end.
B.No, it won’t save the Earth in the end.
C.The COVID-19 will only cause more pollution in the end.
D.It’s hard to say whether it will save the Earth or not.
【3】According to Nicholas, some people will still avoid travel for some time after the COVID-19 outbreak is over because ________.
A.they want to continue to save the Earth
B.they have lost their interest in traveling
C.they have realized the importance of family
D.they don’t have enough money to travel abroad
【4】Why has Nicholas seen hope?
A.Because she has discovered a new method of saving the Earth.
B.Because she has seen that people can take action if they need to.
C.Because many people have changed their attitudes towards family.
D.Because more and more people have realized the seriousness of climate change.
【5】Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.New York has shown a record drop in pollution after the COVID-19 broke out.
B.Nobody has been killed by the COVID-19.
