21、You probably think the music that your parents like is old and dull, and the songs on your playlist are much cooler. But here is what scientists found: people’s music tastes change with their age, according to a study. So it is likely that your own musical preferences will follow a similar path to your parents’.
We used to think that culture and personality are the only factors(因素) that affect one’s music choice. But researchers at the University of Cambridge got data from more than 250, 000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people grow, their music taste changes. There are three musical periods as people grow up “exciting”, “popular” and “sophisticated”.
The first period comes in the teenage years. People prefer exciting music such as punk and rock, because teenagers tend to be active. But as people move into early adulthood, they hope to build close relationships with others. As a result, they become more fond of popular music, such as pop and R&B, which are usually uplifting and danceable. When middle age comes, things have settled down for most people. In this period they will like more “ sophisticated ” music better, such as jazz and classical, as well as more catchy music like country and blues. For many, they feel tired because of work and family, and they need relaxing and emotive music.
But you must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who are still into rock music? Of course there are. But Jason Rentfrow, a research member explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We like music for different reasons,” he said, and thus at that age people may listen to music that can remind themselves of their youths.

22、 “Love is still alive!” Wang Zhiru from Jiangxi Academy of Forestry, said excitedly when receiving a picture of a white crane on January 3rd 2019. The white crane they named Love was saved and set free in early 2018.
Love was first found on April 24th 2018, when Li Zengming, a farmer, drove past a reservoir in the countryside of Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province. Seeing it trying to fly but falling again and again, Li thought that it might be hurt. He drove to the shore and went into the water to rescue it. “I saw the white crane with dull eyes and a weak body. It was probably hurt. If I let it alone, it would be in danger,” Li recalled. After more than half an hour, Li finally took the white crane back to the shore.
Then he called his uncle, an experienced animal saver. for help. “Come over immediately and let’s send it to the police station right away” said his uncle. When seeing the weak wild crane, Jiang Qingchun from the Five-Star Police Station, put down his work and checked it carefully.
“At the end of April, migratory (迁移的) birds usually return to the north. It's abnormal for a white crane to still be living nearby. It may be left behind because of its poor health.” Jiang said. He contacted Wang at the Jiangxi Academy of Forestry for help. Wang's team found Love did not seem to be hurt or have illness, but it suffered from hunger and tiredness. After five days' treatment, its weight rose from 3.75kg to 4kg.
Being kept for long will be bad for birds' ability to survive in the wild. Wang's team decided on May 2nd to set it free at a place in northern China so that it could join the migrating group heading for Siberia in Russia. On May 8th, Love was set free at the Momoge National Nature Reserve.

23、 Sand is a common sight in the world. But you might not know that sand is also a useful resource (资源).
Sand is the second most-used resource in the world after water, the BBC reported. However, the UN said that sand is not limitless and that we might be running out of it.
Sand is made up of very small pieces of rock, soil and minerals (矿物质). It can take tens of thousands of years to form.
But now we are using sand more quickly than it is being formed. According to the BBC, we use about 15 billion tons of sand every year to build houses, roads and other things.
People also put sand in the sea to make new islands. Singapore, for example, is now 20 percent bigger than it was in 1965. Palm islands are three large man-made islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. They took 94 million cubic meters of sand to build.
If people keep using this much sand, it will run out in many places. For example, Vietnam may run out of construction (建造) sand by 2020, Live Science noted.
Since people need so much sand, they are trying to mine (开采) more of it. But this is bad for the environment. Mining sand may cause beaches to disappear and more floods to happen in places close to the sea. Also, this may affect the habitats (栖息地) of many plants and animals.
