21、 As I enjoyed the soft sunshine in the pool, my 8-year-old daughter swam up behind me.
"Guess who, Mommy?" she said.
"No idea. Who is this mystery (神秘的) person?" I joked.
The pair of us talked and laughed together for the rest of the afternoon.
"Remember this," I told myself. "You are happy, right here, right now."
Fast forward a few months, and my thoughts sounded different.
"Just keep going," I would think, or, "How many sleeps until the weekend?"
I didn't like what I was like—someone sleepwalking (梦游) through the week, running on coffee and too tired at night to do anything but watch TV. I thought the Christmas break would recognize (使再次充满活力) me, making me ready to take on another year of early starts. But I had to listen to my heart.
My patient husband and friends had listened to me going over the decision for six months, but the time for talking was over. It was time to make my choice: My daughter needed me and I needed her.
When she was really young, I loved the freedom of going to work as the sun was rising, happy that my family was still sound asleep. Then later, my daughter would set her alarm (闹钟) so she could wake up early with me to chat in the dark together.
The morning I planned to tell everyone I was quitting (放弃) my job, we sat together on the couch. I told her how nervous I was about sharing my news in a few hours' time. Stroking (抚摸) her hair, I asked my daughter what she thought about my decision. "We'll be so much happier, Mommy," she said.
Life is never simply a choice between job and family. Ask anyone, and family always comes first.
Besides, I'm not disappearing— there are plenty of projects to keep me fulfilled.
Who knows what's ahead?
Nobody knows what the future holds, but when it comes to my own, I can make sure it will be filled with long afternoons in the pool with my daughter.

22、 Many people do not like to stay at home on holidays. They want to go out to see something different or do something interesting. So people from the country come to the city and people from the city go to the country for holidays. During the holidays, trains, buses, planes are all very busy. It is very hard to buy train tickets or air tickets. Many people take cars or buses for travelling.
Last May Day my family went to the country by car for our holiday. There was too much traffic on the road, so we had to move very slowly. It took us about an hour to get out of the town. After some time, we came to a hill. It was green and beautiful. We thought this was a good place for a picnic, so we stopped and took the food and drinks out of the car. We sat down and began to eat. 23、 When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and go to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I finished school, I moved to the capital(首都). However, I soon discovered that city life had its problems, too.
One big problem in cities is money---it costs(花费) so much, not including food and housing. Another problem is pollution. I have suffered from asthma (患有哮喘) since I was five. So when the air is so bad, I am afraid to go outside. As for travelling round, I hardly ever drive a car because of the heavy traffic. Many people choose to go by bike, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there is something good in cities, too. You can find a lot to do in the city, both in culture and entertainment(娱乐). Also, there are different kinds of wonderful jobs and people can make more money. Finally, if you like shopping, the stores are very surprising---and, what is more, they are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are teenagers or in your twenties. However, as you get older, and especially when you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem better. I certainly hope to move back there soon.
