I was busy. I wanted to say no, but I saw that their shoes had holes in them and they were wet. “Come in and I’ll make you a cup of tea.” They came in, saying nothing. Their shoes left prints (脚印) on the floor. I gave them tea and bread to protect them against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started my housework again.
The silence in the living room surprised me. I looked in. The woman held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The man asked me in a low voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
Am I rich? Oh, no! I looked at my old things in my room. The woman put her cup back in its saucer (茶碟) carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.”
Then they left, holding their papers against the wind. They didn’t say thank you. They didn’t need to. They had done more than that. They had reminded me that I had so much to thank for. The blue cups and saucers were simple. But they matched. The potatoes and meat before me, a roof over my head, my husband with a job—these things matched too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The prints of their shoes were still wet on my floor. I let them there. I didn’t clear them from the floor. I wanted them there to remind me how rich I was.

23、 It is said that “China is always well protected by the bravest(最勇敢的) of them.” Indeed, in the fight against the novel corona virus(新冠状病毒), it is medical workers who are risking their lives on the frontlines.
By Feb 17, more than 32,000 medical workers from all over China went to Hubei. They are working under unusual conditions, unimaginable stress and intensive(密集的) schedules.
In Wuhan mobile cabin(方舱) hospitals, doctors and nurses work for long hours, usually six hours in a row(连续). Many of them have deep marks on their faces from wearing tight masks and goggles(护目镜). To help them recognize(认出) each other, they write their names on their clothing. They also choose to wear diapers(尿不湿), as it takes nearly an hour to take their protective uniforms on and off. When they are racing time to save lives, every second matters. To cheer each other up, medical workers wrote good words on their uniforms, such as “Stay strong” and “Hope”.
Many doctors and nurses got the disease during the earliest period of the outbreak because of a lack of knowledge about the disease, as well as a shortage of medical supplies(供应). Some of them got well and went back to work. Some of them, unluckily, lost their lives. According to China’s National Health Commission, a total of 1,716 medical workers in China got the disease by Feb 11, while six passed away.

24、 When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and go to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I finished school, I moved to the capital(首都). However, I soon discovered that city life had its problems, too.
One big problem in cities is money---it costs(花费) so much, not including food and housing. Another problem is pollution. I have suffered from asthma (患有哮喘) since I was five. So when the air is so bad, I am afraid to go outside. As for travelling round, I hardly ever drive a car because of the heavy traffic. Many people choose to go by bike, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there is something good in cities, too. You can find a lot to do in the city, both in culture and entertainment(娱乐). Also, there are different kinds of wonderful jobs and people can make more money. Finally, if you like shopping, the stores are very surprising---and, what is more, they are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are teenagers or in your twenties. However, as you get older, and especially when you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem better. I certainly hope to move back there soon.
