21、Ancient (古代的) China produced many types of beautiful works of art. Among them, calligraphy (书法), poetry (诗歌) and painting were the most famous. Often they would be put together in art. These became important starting with the Song dynasty (宋朝).
Calligraphy is the art of handwriting. In the old time the Chinese considered writing as an important form of art. Calligraphers would practice for years to learn to write perfectly, but with style. Each of the over 40,000 characters (字) needed to be written correctly. And each stroke (笔画) in a character had to be written in a certain order.
Poetry was also an important form of art. Great poets were famous all over the country, but all educated people were expected to write poetry. During the Tang dynasty, poetry was so important that writing poetry was part of the examinations to become a civil servant (文官) and work for the government.
Chinese painting was often connected with calligraphy. It is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world. The most traditional way of Chinese painting is known as “national” or “native painting” (国画), which is quite different from western painting. People can draw mountains, homes, birds, trees and water on it.

22、 Thanksgiving Day was near. A first grade teacher gave her class a fun task——to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.
Most of the students didn’t come from rich families, but many would still celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional customs(习俗). These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of the students’ art. And they were, for the most part.
But one student named Douglas drew a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was often sad. While other children would play with each other during break time, he would stand closely by his teacher's side. There was pain behind his sad eyes. But what was it? One could only guess.
Yes, his picture was different. He drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
Other children started to guess whose hand it could be. One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because police keep people safe. And so the discussion went on.
Finally the teacher walked over to Douglas'desk, bent down and asked him whose hand it was.
The little boy looked away and said, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled(回想起) the times when she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, and times when shed said things like “Take my hand Douglas, we’ll go outside” or “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.”
Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand.

23、 For ten weeks, in a great house on the island of St Thomas, John C. Lilly tried to teach a six-year-old dolphin to speak English. Margaret Howe, an experiment(试验) helper, would live day and night with Peter, a dolphin. And they would eat, bathe, sleep and play together from Sunday to Friday, with only Saturdays off for Margaret. She lived her life in swimming clothes — with a coat on colder evenings — and cut her hair short so that she could get on with Peter more easily.
After a few days, Peter was becoming more and more interested in winning her attentions. He threw a ball against her shower towel to get her to play. As time went by, he only wanted to play ball with her and not on his own.
The problem was that, just at the time Peter and Margaret began to get on well just as two best friends, the experiment ended and the lab was closed. After a few weeks, Margaret received the sad news that Peter had killed himself by refusing to breathe, and sinking to the bottom of his pool.
Dolphins may not speak English — but, just like humans, they know all about broken hearts.

24、Can you understand the following words? “Long time no see.” “Good good study, day day up.”
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.”
Yes, we call these examples Chinglish, like “people mountain, people sea”.
Chinglish usually means English vocabulary with Chinese grammar on street signs or products. However, many English speaking tourists love them. Tom has been living in Beijing for years. “I think many Chinese people dislike Chinglish. But I love it. It’s quite interesting. I think if the translations of English in China are all perfect, something will be lost from Chinese culture.” However, Chinglish will probably become a part of history in future. Beijing has made a plan to correct Chinglish within five years. “It is so funny to see Chinglish on the signs. And they are a kind of trouble for communication between the Chinese and foreigners,” a Beijinger said.
However, some people in China like Chinglish. They think that English has “borrowed” a lot from other languages such as German, French and Spanish in the past, and now as Chinese’s turn.
