24、 You may have wondered why there are fish tanks (at many doctor's and dentist's offices.Actually these medical professionals are trying to keep their working areas less stressful with the help of fish tanks.Because of the soft bubbling (冒泡声) from the fish tanks, their patients are expected to feel less nervous or worried when staying there.
The sound of running water can make people feel relaxed. For this reason, places where water keeps running are often considered good choices for people to have deep thoughts and stay relaxed in mind.Even a small tabletop fountain (喷泉) can make a workspace more relaxing.Unlike loud noises, repeated natural sounds remind us that everything is OK." These slow but soft sounds are just the ones that bring us no harm,"said Orfeu Buxton,a professor at Pennsylvania State University." It seems like they are saying,' Don't worry ;don't worry ;don't worry."
Besides bringing a sense of peace to your indoor space,a fountain can also prevent noises from coming inside.I recently had a small indoor fountain for my workspace.I enjoy the fountain even when I'm not working at home.
If you want to have an indoor fountain too, there are plenty of wonderful ones on sale, which may cost you a lot.You can try making one yourself, using some inexpensive materials, like I did.And you will always keep it around ---- 1,000 doctor's offices can't be wrong about the relaxing effects of running water.

25、 Why are some people better able to beat the flu than others? Part of the answer, according to a new study, is related to the first flu strain we met in childhood.
Scientists from UCLA and the University of Arizona have found that people’s ability to beat the flu virus is decided not only by the sub types of flu they have had throughout their lives, but also by the sequence (顺序) in which they have been infected by those viruses. Their study was published in PLoS Pathogens. The research offers an explanation for why some people become much worse than others when infected with the same strain of the flu virus.
In addition, UCLA scientists, including Professor James Lloyd-Smith, who was also a senior author of the PLoS Pathogens research, recently completed a study that analyzed (分析)travel-related screening(筛查) for the 2019-nCoV. The researchers reported that screening travelers is not very effective for the 2019 coronavirus ― that it will catch less than half of infected travelers, on average ― and that most infected travelers cannot be found out, meaning that they have no symptoms(症状)yet, and are unaware that they have been at high risk. So stopping the spread of the virus is not simply a matter of improving screening methods at airports and other travel centers.
“This puts the responsibility on government officials and public health officials to follow up with travelers after they arrive, to separate them and trace(追踪) their contacts if they get sick later,” said Lloyd-Smith, a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology(生态学和进化生物学). “Many governments have started to impose quarantines (隔离), or even travel bans, as they realize that screening is not enough to stop the spread of the coronavirus.”
One major concern, Lloyd-Smith said is that other countries, especially developing nations, lack the infrastructure(基础设施)and resources for those measures, and are therefore vulnerable to importing(输入) the disease. “Much of the public health world is very concerned about the virus being introduced into Africa or India, where large populations exist that are not able to receive advanced medical care,” he said.
【1】Why is the scientists’ research very important?

27、 For the most part of my life, I have lived in a small town in northern Arizona. As I got older, it seemed as if my town got smaller.
All things I could see in the town were bad. It looked ugly, small and was filled with terrible people. I wanted to be in new places with bigger chances and to meet new people. That was exactly what I did. I moved to the city of Phoenix to go to college and worked hard to achieve what I had dreamed of.
For the first year when I was away from home, I wanted to stay away and never go back. When people were taking a trip to my hometown, I would always question “Why would you like to do that? It’s so ugly.” All I had towards my hometown was negative feelings.
However, after being away for about three years, my perspective has completely changed. I have nothing but love for my hometown — its beauty, and the sentimental value (感情价值) that it holds.
After all, it’s where I’m from. Yes, there are bad things, but there are also some good ones: Dad raced the train on the way to school; Mum let us stop for ice cream every Friday after school to celebrate the end of the week; I walked around downtown with friends in high school, thinking we were cool.
It might take being away from something for you to truly appreciate it. It’s true when people say that distance makes the heart grow fonder(温柔的). Now I visit my hometown every chance I get. Even if I am no longer living there, it will always hold a piece of my heart.
