24、Language is always changing and developing. This isn’t a bad thing. If English hadn’t changed for a long time, we won’t have words to describe telephones, washing machines, computers or some other new things.
Language changes for several reasons. First, it changes because the needs of its speaker change. New technologies, new products, and new experiences need new words to express them clearly. Another reason for change is that different people have different language experiences. People use different sets of words and expressions, because they have different ages, jobs, education levels(水平) and so on.
How does language develop then? On the one hand, many of the languages changes begin with young people. When young people communicate with others of their own age, their language grows in grammar, words and expressions that are different from the older people’s. Some have a short lifetime but others can influence the language for long. On the other hand, we get new words in many different ways. We borrow them from other languages, we create them by making words shorter or combining(组合) words and we make them out of proper names.
Languages that don’t change over time are considered dead languages. The fact that English changes so much shows that it is alive and well.

This poem was written by a middle school student in a lonely mountainous town in Yunnan Province during her first poetry class. The girl missed her mother, who died when she was 5.
Kang Yu, the teacher who taught the girl how to write the poem, graduated from Renmin University of China in Beijing in 2015. Soon after her graduation, Kang moved to a town in Yunnan, and worked as a teacher at a middle school.
Kang said, “Compared with students in the city, perhaps students in the countryside need a way to express their feelings and be heard more.” Supported by the headmaster and other teachers, the school held eight poetry classes for students every year.
As the classes grew in popularity, Kang became the school’s favorite teacher. After she finished her teaching at the school in June 2017, she returned to Beijing and planned to study abroad.
However, on Teachers’ Day in 2017, Kang received a big box full of poems and letters written by students at her old school. She felt she was needed and decided to abandon her plan of studying abroad. Instead she set up Enlighten our Future, a charity that teaches students in the countryside how to write poems.

But the customs officer checked all the plant and animal products at the airport. Unfortunately it was illegal(违法)for me to bring into the country the kind of food my mother had given me and so it all had to be thrown away.
B. It was very hot so I put on some shorts and a T-shirt to go sightseeing. I hadn’t gone very far when I found everyone was looking at me, and they didn’t seem friendly to me. One woman even spat on me as I walked past. I decided to get off the crowded streets and so I turned down a small, quiet street.

F. When I arrived, a customs officer at the airport looked in my bag and found the pills in a small box. He wanted to know what the pills were for and why they weren’t in their proper bottle with my name and the doctor’s name on it. I explained that the bottle had been too big and heavy.
