24、In England, some food companies across the whole country have been told to carry out urgent (紧急的) tests on all beef products. Do you know why? That’s because some food companies used horsemeat to make beef products.
There are some examples about the horsemeat matter. In January, 2013, in a number of UK supermarkets, frozen hamburgers were found to have traces of horsemeat in them. Some frozen beef products made by food company FINDUS were found to contain horsemeat. All of the beef products made by this company have been removed from sale.
The government said that there’s nothing to suggest any health risk from the products. Food minister David Heath said people should not throw away frozen meat products and carry on eating meat. The government will tell people not to eat meat if the meat is not safe.

25、True or False (判断下列句子是否符合短文内容,符合的用 “T” 表示,不符合的用 “F”表示)
“My family have been watching the ‘Super Girl’ singing competition TV programme. My little daughter asked me what ‘PK’ meant, but I had no idea,” said a Yangzhou father.
To a lot of Chinese young people who have been playing MUD games(多用户网络游戏) online, it is impossible not to know this jargon(行话). In such Internet games, “PK” is short for “Player Kill”, in which two players fight with each other until one ends the life of the other. In the case of the “Super Girl” singing competition, “PK” was used when two singers had to compete with each other for only one chance to go up.
Like this father, Chinese teachers at high schools have also found their students’ compositions, using Internet jargon, difficult to understand. Once a high school teacher from Nanjing asked her students to write compositions, but they came up with a lot of Internet jargon that she didn’t understand. “My ‘GG’ came back this summer from college. He told me I had grown up to be a ‘PLMM’. He always took me to the ‘KPM’...,” went one composition. “GG” means Ge Ge (Chinese pinyin for “brother”). “PLMM” means Piao Liang Mei Mei (beautiful girl). “KPM” is short for KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonalds. “Gr 8”means “Great”. “LOL” has the meaning of “Laugh Out Loud”.
If you don’t even know what a “Kong Long” (a bad-looking girl) or a “Qing Wa” (a bad-looking boy) is, then you’ll perhaps be thought as a “Cai Niao” (a person who starts to use the Internet).
While some language experts agree that Internet jargon is a new development in language, many teachers and parents are worried that too much use of such language may keep the students away from the “right” usages (使用) or make them fail to do well in language exams.
【1】The Yangzhou father doesn’t know the meaning of “PK”.
【2】Many Chinese school students like to use Internet jargon in their speaking and writing today.
【3】On the Internet, you can use “GG” and “MM” to show you are very happy.
【4】We call a person “Cai Niao” if he or she is a beginner in using the Internet.
【5】If you use the Internet jargon in your composition, it will be difficult to understand.
【6】“PK” in the Internet games means to help the other.
【7】Many teachers and parents think of Internet jargon may keep the students away from the “right” usages of language.
26、 Once, a man sold his well to a farmer. Next day when the farmer went to get the water from that well, the man didn't agree. He said, "I sold you the well, not the water, so you can't get the water."
The farmer became very sad. And he came to the judge in the office alone. He described everything and asked for help. The judge called up the man who sold the well to the farmer. He asked, "Why don't you let him use the water of the well? You have sold the well to him." The man replied, "I have sold the well to the farmer, not the water. That means he can't get the water from the well."
The judge smiled and said, "OK, as long as you have sold the well to him, and you say the water is yours, then you can't keep your water in the farmer's well. Either you pay for the farmer to keep your water, or you must take it out of his well right away."
The man understood that his idea couldn't work. The story tells us we can't cheat others, though we are smart. We can't win in the end.
【1】A farmer bought a well from a man.
【2】The man went to the judge in the office alone.
【3】The man thought the farmer could get the water from the well at first.

【5】The story tells us we can't cheat others, though we are smart.

Hello Sandy,
We have just returned from our holiday. We went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors. This is a beautiful place. It is a natural park. There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills, miles of grassland with no people, just sheep and birds.
Edward, who had just come out of hospital, could not walk as far as be used to. However this meant that we walked in the mornings, and then stopped at a cafe for lunch each day, before returning to the place we live. Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon, while the ladies went for another walk. Very pleasant!
I have taken lots of photos from the place we live, across the valley(峡谷)below us, of the morning sunrise, and the mist in the valley. Also, in England, the old steam powered trains(蒸汽火车)are very popular. I have taken many photos of the train and from it.
Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter. It is very early (we usually expect snow in January). It rained all day, then snowed in the evening. Today we have bright sunshine!
Both Jenny and I are well I don’t know if I told you, in the last e-mail, that Jenny is now working in a hotel. Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work.
Please write to us to tell us your news.
Yours,
Victor
