  • 24、   Barbara was driving her six-year-old son, Ben, to his piano lesson. They were late, and Barbara was beginning to think she should have called it off. Barbara, a nurse at the local hospital, was very tired at that moment. The coldest season and the terrible weather just brought them more difficulties.

  • 26、The Building That Moves

Everyone knows that buildings don't move. They can't change the way they look. However, architect(建筑师)David Fisher wants to change that.

Fisher has an amazing idea. He wants to make 80-story buildings that change shape. Each floor will move around slowly. The floors will move at different speeds. Because of this, the shape of the building is always changing. “These buildings will never look the same,” says Fisher.

His idea is an interesting one. However, Fisher doesn't stop there. He also wants the building to be “green”. The building will make its own energy. In most buildings, only the top floor has a roof(屋顶). In Fisher's building, each floor will have its own roof. The roofs each have solar panels(太阳能板). This means a lot more solar energy. Also, machines between each floor of the building will catch the wind. They will turn the wind into energy.

Fisher's ideas sound impossible. However, that's what people also said before humans traveled into space!

1The passage is mainly talking about ________.

    A.buildings for the future

    B.the life of an architect

    C.how green buildings work

2The underlined word “80-story” means the building has 80 ________.

    A.shapes B.floors C.different speeds

3Fisher's building can make its own energy because the building ________.

    A.is tall and always moving

B.is tall and has many solar panels

C.is always moving and has many solar panels

4The Fisher's building will NOT get energy from ________.

    A.the sun B.the water C.the wind

5Why does the writer say “that's what people also said before humans traveled into space”

A.To show why Fisher's building will never work.

B.To show why Fisher's building is like a spaceship.

C.To show that unusual ideas can sometimes work.

  • 27、

When my daughter was in primary school, one day she brought home 4 tiny trees, which were given to the students by the school to plant. None of them looked very strong but with a hope for the future.

I planted them in our backyard. Over the years an accident brought an end to three of them. All that was left was a weak tree. It grew very slowly and never got very tall. I noticed a few years ago that it was starting to die. The needles on the branches had turned brown. Only the top third of the tree was still green.

Last summer I did my best to save it but it was useless. This morning I went out and looked at it again. I was deciding on whether it would be better to just cut it down.

As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the needles. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the top branches.

I smiled when I looked at it and decided that maybe this old tree had some life and usefulness left in it yet. It may not be healthy or pretty but it was still giving a bird a home and oxygen (氧气) to this world.

This tree reminded me of something too. All of our lives have purpose. All of our lives have meaning. It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath there are things for us to do, love for us to give, and joy for us to share. Until our last moment here we can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

1None of the tiny trees looked ______.

    A.short B.tall C.weak D.strong

2A few years later, ______ of the trees still grew slowly in the backyard.

    A.one B.two C.three D.four

3The writer did not cut down the tree because ______.

A.it was still a young tree B.it was giving a bird home

C.it was growing very well D.it was an old and big tree
