四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Why Music Isn’t for Everyone?

They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.

But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia (音乐快感丧失)”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.

For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological (生理的) measures of emotion.

According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated (出汗) more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.

The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallares of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.

To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow (血流量) to the reward system in the brain.

“People who got less pleasure from music had comparatively lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.

The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will be inactive. Thus, it will release(释放) less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine (多巴胺). As a result, people get less pleasure from music.

If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good tune (曲调) isn’t one of them.

【1】What do we know about people with “musical anhedonia”?

A.They usually avoid listening to music.

B.They like to listen to certain types of music.

C.They believe cultural differences are larger than music.

D.They can’t feel the pleasure that music brings to others.

【2】What was the purpose of the study?

A.To learn what music people love most.

B.To learn how music influences people’s emotions.

C.To see whether music works in the same way for all people.

D.To understand the relationship between music and the body.

【3】What happened to the participants when they listened to music?

A.All of them had faster heartbeat and sweated more.

B.People who enjoyed music had more dopamine released.

C.They showed different physical signs as the music changed.

D.People who got less pleasure from music had higher blood flow.

  • 25、Just a couple of hours ago, I was on the plane, ready to fly home from London. The flight had been put off by a few hours so it felt good to be so close to take-off. I had my iPod in place and a new book to read. Then, over the loudspeaker came the pilot’s voice: “We’re sorry to tell you we must cancel this flight because there’s still something wrong with the plane.”

The passengers reactions(反应)that announcement led to were interesting. One man close to me began to argue with an air hostess. A couple in another row complained loudly. A businessman in a black suit even kicked the seat in front of him. Yet some passengers acted differently. An elderly gentleman smiled as he helped others take their bags down from the shelf. A teenager, rather than trying to rush off the plane like most of the other passengers, stopped to help a woman with a disability. The lady sitting next to me laughed and said: “Hey, it’s not the end of the world,” before she made a call to her kids and shared her adventure with them.

No life is perfect; mine certainly isn’t. We all must face challenges, both large and small. You and I have the power to choose to rise above the external circumstances(外部环境). We always have the choice to be strong and kind when we are in trouble.

My seatmate was right — things didn’t get that terrible. Anyway, I am safe. I have my health. I have two wonderful children. I have work I love and so much to be grateful for. Sure I now have to wait a few hours to catch the next flight home.

1What caused the passengers’ different reactions?

    A. The loudspeaker.   B. The airhostess.

    C. The plane’s problem.   D. The pilot’s announcement.

2Who turned his anger on the seat?

    A. A teenager helping the disabled.   B. An old man taking bags down.

    C. A man in a black suit.   D. A man close to the writer.

3What did the woman sitting next to the writer do?

    A. She complained loudly.   B. She made a phone call to her family.

    C. She helped others carry their bags.   D. She told moving stories to her children.

4What can we learn from the story?

    A. Our life is full of ups and downs.   B. It is natural to be scared and angry in trouble.

    C. We should help each other .   D. Keep calm and hopefulwhen life is hard.

六、完型填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 29、完形填空

    阅读下面的短文,掌握其大意,然后从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。

    There's always hope

I was sitting around the other morning thinking about some of my former (以前的) students. When I do that, my thoughts always turn to Vincent.

Eighteen years ago, on the first day of third grade, when I had my class write something about themselves, he just sat there. So I took him outside to see what was wrong. “You can ___ about something else; anything you want,” I offered. He turned to me and shouted, “I can’t write!” and threw his pencil.

Vincent was difficult and ______. He acted out. He threw things. He refused to work, to be quiet, to sit down.

So these many years later, I wondered what he was up to. With time on my hands, I googled him and looked him up on Facebook and before long I found him. And after a few texts we agreed to meet. And he told me his ______.

Vincent knew he was smart, but he also knew he couldn’t do what other kids did. He had to move around and talk. For him, sitting still, listening and reading, didn't ______. The more he tried to do the things on his terms, the more we forced him to do the things on our terms and the angrier he got. The angrier he got, the more trouble he got into.

In other words, we _______ him.

But he wouldn’t let me tell him that. He took full responsibility for his behavior. He remembered feeling ______ for acting out.

That _____me. Kids like Vincent are always angry about something; they hold the world responsible for the consequence(后果).

This story also had one of us turning Vincent around. But none of us did that for him. There were no excellent teachers like Annie Sullivan or Jaime Escalante. That didn’t mean we didn’t______. I remember countless conversations, trying to understand him, going to his Little League games.

It was Vincent who turned Vincent around, along with a junkie (吸毒者) house painter he worked with after failing through high school. This guy clearly scared (惊吓) him straight; talked him into going to ______.

But it was Vincent who attended classes and got straight A’s for two years. And it was Vincent who got accepted into ten different universities, including Stanford and UW. And it was Vincent who landed a great job at a big tech company.

Vincent is completely different form 18 years ago. I couldn’t be happier for him.

And for me, the _____ is simple but powerful — there’s always hope.

    【1】A.talk   B.read C.write   D.hear

    2】A.angry B.lazy C.careless D.disappointed

    3】A.job B.story   C.school D.family

    4】A.arrive B.change   C.work     D.end

    5】A.forgot   B.helped   C.freed   D.failed

    6】A.proud B.special   C.natural     D. terrilble

    7】A.attracted B.encouraged C.surprised  D.influenced

    8】A.try     B.wait   C.learn D.succeed

    9】A.movies   B.business C.college     D.sports

    【10】A.rule B.memory C.answer D.message
