四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   On May 3, 2007, in a city in Portugal(葡萄牙), the Smiths, discovered that their 4-year-old daughter was missing from their hotel room. Some famous people, such as David Beckham and J.K. Rowling from their homeland, Britain, paid attention to the story. But the story also became a great discussion.

The great discussion seems to be focused on culture differences and customs of many countries. In the UK, as well as in the US, most parents are against making their children in second-hand smoke, loud music, or in a bar. So, they don't bring their children to bars. However, in Portugal and other countries in southern Europe, parents think it's OK to bring their young children with them to bars. The discussion is becoming a culture war, or at least that is how the TV or newspaper is describing it.

"Let's now look back at the hours before the little girl's loss. The Smiths and their 3 young children were in Portugal on vacation. On May 3, the parents decided to go for drinks at 2 nearby bar. They left their 3 sleeping children, Kate aged 4, and her brother and sister, both aged 2, alone in their hotel room while they went out. Clearly, this was not the first time they have left their children alone, and the parents seem to have no regret(后悔)for doing so."

    A.a war between two countries.

B.a volunteer activity to find the girl.

C.a competition between Portuguese reporters and English ones.

D.a discussion about going to bars.

4The last paragraph tells us ________.

B.the Smiths are not good parents

C.the Smiths often leave their children alone and think it is an accident this time

D.the Smiths are still good parents

5What is the best title for the passage?

A.The culture of Portugal and Britain

    B.Looking for child

    D.Missing 4-year-old Child in Portugal

  • 25、   China will cut the number of climbers trying to climb Mount Qomolangma from the north this year as part of plans for the clean-up on the world's highest mountains. The clean-up activity will include moving away the bodies of climbers who died at more than 8,000 metres up the mountain.

The total number of climbers trying to reach the top of the world's highest mountain from the north will be controlled to less than 300. The climbing season will be controlled to spring.

Parts of Qomolangma are in China and Nepal (尼泊尔). Each year, around 60,000 climbers and guides visit the Chinese north side of the mountain, but few actually try to climb it. China has set up stations to sort (分类), recycle and break down rubbish from the mountain, which includes cans, plastic bags, tents and oxygen tanks (氧气瓶).

On the Nepalese side, mountaineering trip organizers have begun sending huge rubbish bags to climbers during the spring climbing season. They should collect rubbish that then can be carried by helicopters back to the base camp.

Every year there are many victims on Qomolangma often in the "death area" above 8,000 metres, where the air is the thinnest. In 2017, 648 people reached the top of Qomolangma. Six people have died on the mountain that year, one of whom on the north side.

Qomolangma has become the world's highest rubbish dump (垃圾场). Meanwhile, melting (融化) ice caused by global warming is exposing (暴露) rubbish that has been left on the mountain since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first successful climbing 67 years ago.

1What can we guess from the first paragraph?

A.No climbers will climb Mount Qomolangma.

B.Some climbers died during mountain climbing.

C.About 8,000 people died of climbing the mountain.

A.Each year, around 60,000 climbers climb the mountain from the north side.

C.China has set up stations to deal with rubbish that is left on the mountain.

D.On the Nepalese side, climbers should take rubbish back to the base camp.

4What does the underlined word "victims" mean?

A.Persons who enjoy climbing. B.Persons who work hard.

C.Persons who help climbers. D.Persons who have experienced death.

5What can we mainly learn from the last paragraph?

A.The weather in the world is getting warmer.

  • 27、Alfredo Moser is a Brazilian worker who is skilled at repairing machines. His wife says her husband has always been handy (手巧的) at home and made tables and chairs. Alfredo has invented a way of lighting his house during the day without electricity.

He has been using plastic bottles filled up with water and a little bleach ( 白剂) to provide dark rooms with light for many years. And the idea has now spread across the world. It is predicted that his lighting system, which works using refraction (折射) of sunlight, will be fitted in over a million homes by the end of this year.

Alfredo used normal plastic drink bottles that are often thrown away. The secret of the liquid in the bottles is the bleach added to water, which stops it turning green in the sunlight. Mr. Moser drills a hole in a roof tile (瓦片) and then pushes the bottle in from below, keeping the bottle in place with polyester resin (聚酯树脂). Depending on the strength of sunlight, the light fills his home, and the bottles are just like electric bulbs (灯泡) of between 40 and 60 watts ().

Alfredo came up with the idea for his “Moser light” during one of the blackouts in Brazil in 2002. He said only factories had power in his home city, in southern Brazil during the energy shortage.

The local supermarket and his neighbours’ houses are using Moser lights. He earned a few dollars, but his invention has not made him a rich man. Now a great number of people admire what he is doing!

    A. Alfredo was always busy repairing machines.

    B. Alfredo couldn’t do any housework.

    C. Alfredo was clever with his hands.

    D. Alfredo is a helpful man to save our world.

2Why does Alfredo put a little bleach into the bottle?

    A. Because the bottle can give more light.

    B. Because the bleach can keep the bottle in a roof tile.

    C. Because the bleach can protect water from turning green.

    D. Because the bleach can reflect the sunlight.

3Which of the following is TRUE about the passage?

    A. People can use Moser’s lights only at night.

    B. Moser’s light gives too poor light.

    C. Moser’s bottles use electricity to light the room.

    D. Moser’s bottle light is a green idea.

4The underlined word “blackouts” in the passage probably means  .

    A. 地震   B. 停电   C. 旱灾   D. 洪涝

5We can infer from the passage that _  .

    A. Alfredo’s lights will be more and more popular

    B. nobody will buy Moser lights in the future

    C. Alfredo won’t repair machines any more

    D. Alfredo’s invention will bring him a lot of money
