四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   The sight of a tailor-shop gave me a strong wish to throw off my old clothes and get a new suit. Could I afford it? No, I had nothing in the world but a million-pound note. So I forced myself to go on by. But soon I was drawing back again. The temptation troubled me a lot. I must have passed that shop six times during that struggle. At last I gave in, I had to. I asked if they had a cheap suit. The fellow I spoke to made no answer at first, looked me up and down, noticed that I was almost in rags(衣衫褴褛), then said, “Just a minute.”

I waited till he had finished his work. Then he took me into a back room to choose a cheapest suit for me. I put it on. It didn’t fit, but it was new and I was anxious to have it, so I said shyly:

“Could you wait a few days for the money? I haven’t any small change on me.”

The fellow looked at me coldly and said, “Oh, you haven’t. Well, of course, I know that gentlemen like you carry only large notes(支票)”.

I was angry, and said, “My friend, you shouldn't judge a stranger always by the clothes he wears. I am quite able to pay for this suit. I simply didn't wish to put you to the trouble of changing a large note. ” “Why do you think we can’t change your note? Instead, we can.”

I handed the note to him and said: “Oh, very well, I am sorry.”

He received it with a smile, and then as he looked at the note, his smile froze.

Realizing what was going on, the owner of the shop gave a low whistle and talked excitedly, as if to himself.

“To sell such a suit as that to a millionaire! Tod’s a fool. Please get those clothes off, sir. Wait till you see what we’ll make for you to your own measure.”

Before I could get in a word he had measured me, and was giving orders for evening suits, morning suits, shirts and all sorts of things.

C.A bad beginning makes a bad ending. D.Never judge a person just by his appearance.

  • 25、One of sweetest memories as a child is of going down to the river and sitting comfortably on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to songs of birds. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under the pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original state after the wind had died down.

When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to bend and move back, the word “resilience” comes to my mind. When it is used for a person, this word means the ability to readily recover (恢复) from shock, sadness or any other suffering. Have you ever felt like you were going to snap? Have you ever felt like you were at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived to talk about it.

Life is a mixture (混合) of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.

An amount of hope will take you through the unpleasant suffering. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem. The unpleasant suffering may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.

If things get tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!

【1】What does the underlined word “snap” in the second paragraph most probably mean?

    A. break B. change   C. win   D. complain

2】 What can help people get through sufferings according to the writer?

    A. Holding peace and quiet in mind.

    B. Waiting until sufferings disappear.

    C. Experiencing more bad times.

    D. Hoping for a better tomorrow.

3】What would be the best title of this passage?

    A. Memories of Bamboo

    B. Be Like Bamboo

    C. Enjoying Bamboo

    D. Characteristics of Bamboo

Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.

It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm. At home, Jake watched a lot of programmes about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programmes and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole and pointed it up the hill so the wind couldn’t blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous-15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.

The TV programmes always said,“ If you are lost, you should find someone else’ s tracks(足迹) through the snow and follow them.” “I wanted to live my life.” remembers Jake.“So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those.” He walked and walked and finally he saw lights. • 27、   I remember the day that I was changed into a new class and I felt unwanted.

The first day that I was in my class, my table didn’t talk to me and I didn’t either. The next  day in that class, the teacher let me sit next to this girl who had her pierced ears, lips and nose. She said, “You’re new to class, aren’t you? Well, my name is Ashley.” I looked at her for a second and then said, “Hi.” She knew that I was shy. She introduced me to the rest of the table loudly, who didn’t look nice, but then again I thought Ashley was wild when I saw her up close.

That whole week the other girls at my table would look at me like a hungry animal who was to kill its prey (猎物) and they whisper to one another about my looks and how I wasn’t wanted in this class.

One day I felt upset and Ashley asked, “What’s wrong?” I didn’t answer but she found out that I went through bullying (威逼), and depression. Then I told her what was up. She said, “I thought you were a rich girl with good grades and no problems, but I was wrong.” The rest of the table heard about the real me and they apologized for what they had said.

Later, Ashley introduced me to new people who had gone through the same things that I had. Thanks to Ashley, I was no longer alone in the world. And that same day I met Perla, my best friend now, who taught me not to judge others on their appearance. I really understood it from Ashley.
