  • 25、When I began to move to Auckland to study the law, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried about the shortage of jobs and the cultural differences that I would face.

I came to New Zealand in July 2013. I found the people were very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a part time job to make a living.

Deciding to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door for a job. However, I received a little or no reply. This became my daily activity after college for a few weeks.

One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job chances. The people there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in that way. As I was about to leave, a secretary in the building came up to me and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.

Along the way, I realized I had run out of copies of my resume (简历). The man stopped at his friend’s office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking. I handed out my resume and went home. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.

It seemed that the world always gives back to you when you need it. And this time, it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing (祝福).

【1】 The writer moved to Auckland to ______.

    A. avoid the job shortage

    B. face the cultural differences

    C. start his life in a new place

    D. study the law in college

2After staying in New Zealand for a short time, the writer realized ______.

    A. he needed to find a job to make a living

    B. people there were not very friendly

    C. he should always stay confident

    B. How a secretary turned out to be a real hero.

    C. How a stranger helped the writer to get a job.

    D. How the writer made a living in a new country.

  • 26、When I was a senior in college, I came home for Christmas vacation and expected a fun-filled week with my two brothers. We were so excited to be together and we volunteered to watch the store so that my mother and father could take their first day off in years. The day before my parents went to Boston, my father took me quietly aside to the little den behind the store. He took out a cigar box, opened it and showed me a little pile of newspaper articles.

    “What are they?” I asked.

Father replied seriously, “These are articles I’ve written and some letters to the editor that have been published.”

As I began to read, I saw at the bottom of each article the name Walter Chapman. “Why didn’t you tell me you’d done that?” I asked.

“Because I didn’t want your mother to know. She has always told me that since I didn’t have much education, I shouldn’t try to write. I wanted to run for some governmental office also, but she told me I shouldn’t try. I guess she was afraid she’d be shameful if I lost…”

He watched me as I read over a few of the articles and when I looked up, his big blue eyes were wet. “I guess I tried for something too big this time,” he added.

    “Did you write something else?”

“Yes, I sent some suggestions in to our church magazine on how the national nominating committee could be more fairly(公平). It’s been three months since I sent it in. I guess I tried for something too big.”

This was such a new side to my fun-loving father that I didn’t quite know what to say, so I tried, “Maybe it’ll still come.”

The next morning our parents left on the bus to the railway station where they took a train to Boston.

Early that evening I looked out the store window and saw my mother get off the bus—alone.

    “Where’s Dad?” We asked together.

    “Your father’s dead.”

She told us they had been walking through the Park Street Subway Station in the crowds of people when father had fallen to the floor. A nurse bent over him, looked up at mother and said simply, “He’s dead.” Mother had stood by father, not knowing what to do as people tripped (绊倒) over him in their rush through the subway. Mother told us the shocking tale without running a tear. We didn’t cry either and we took turns waiting on the customers.

On the morning of the funeral (葬礼), I noticed the church magazine on the table. Normally I would never have opened it, but maybe that special article might be there—and it was. In the magazine I also found a two-page letter to my father from Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr., thanking him for the campaign suggestions. I took out the box and put them in it.

I didn’t tell anyone about the box.

【1】What may be the direct causes of Father kept the box hidden?

    a. Father received little education.

    b. Some suggestions father made to magazine might bring danger to the family.

    c. Mother considered it a shame to make the box go public.

    d. Father knew he would die soon.

    A.ab

    B.ac

    C.bc

    D.bd

【2】Which one shows the order of the events happened?

    a. My father showed me a little pile of newspaper articles.

    b. Our parents took a train to Boston.

    c. My father’s article to the church magazine was published.

    d. I came home for Christmas vacation.

    e. My father died in an accident.

    f. My father sent some suggestions to the magazine.

    A.f-d-a-b-e-c

    B.d-a-f-b-e-c

    C.d-f-c-a-b-e

    D.f-d-b-a-c-e

【3】Which is the best title for this passage?

    A.The Death of My Father

    B.Father and I

C.The Mystery of A Hidden Box

    D.A Sad Christmas Vacation

  • 27、“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person,” Mason, a volunteer said.

National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations. Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.

The following tips can help if you have some of these worries:

Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.

Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.

Work with a veteran(经验丰富的) volunteer. He volunteered a lot; he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.

Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.

Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If the experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.

Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, little things can change a person’s life.”

    1Volunteering can help _____.

    A. make a decision B. see the world clearly

    C. thank other people D. make a person’s life better

2What could be the reason to stop people taking the first step?

    A. They don’t have enough time. B. They are prevented by their families.

    C. They fear that their abilities are shared. D. They don’t expect to become volunteers.

3Which of the following can help people take the first step?

    A. Start out quickly. B. Organizing a training meeting.

    C. Invite a friend to be with them. D. Join in a group with different values.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. To tell people to make changes in their lives.

    B. To encourage people to start their volunteering.

    C. How to make great achievements in volunteering.

    D. How to keep on volunteering whatever happened.
