    Kimberly, 15, Diocesan Girls' School

Many students now work part-time during the summer and winter holidays. Some people think students should not work part-time. However, I support the idea.

Firstly, working part-time can raise students' self-esteem. Through earning money, students will gain a sense of achievement.

Secondly, part-time jobs can provide both training and experience. They will prepare students for their future careers.

Part-time work can also teach students about responsibility (责任感). What's more, it allows them to put into practice the skills they have learned in school.

However, students must make sure their part-time work does not affect their studies.

Laurence, 15, Tsung Tsin Middle School

In my opinion, working part-time is not a good idea. Here is why.

During the summer and winter holidays, students should go over what they have learned in school. Working part-time will make them very tired. Students will not be able to focus on their studies. It is very hard to balance studying and working.

Compared with students in many other cities, those in Hong Kong have a heavy workload. They should use the little free time they have for relaxation, not work.

Some may argue that part-time work helps students learn skills that are not taught in class. Therefore, students should work part-time. I disagree. We study full-time from primary school to university, for only about 15 years. This period of time is very precious. After leaving university, few people go back to school to study full-time. We have so many years ahead of us to learn skills we cannot learn at school. As students, we should just focus on our studies.

【1】How many advantages of working part-time did Kimberly mention?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

    【2】Laurence thinks students should________.

    A.work full-time

    B.work part-time

    C.balance studying and working

D.just pay attention to studies first

【3】In Laurence's opinion, what should students do during the summer and winter holidays?

①Relax②Go over what they have learned in school.

③Take extra classes.④Put what they’ve learned in school into practice

    A.①②

    B.①③

    C.③④

    D.②④

【4】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Both Kimberly and Laurence are working part-time.

B.Kimberly thinks it is difficult to balance working and studying.

C.According to Laurence, students in Hong Kong have little free time.

D.Many people today go back to school to study full-time after leaving university.

  • 27、   There was once a farmer who had an excellent olive(橄榄树)orchard(果园). He was very hard-working and the farm always prospered(繁荣)with his efforts. But he knew that his three sons didn’t like the farm work at all and they were thirsty for wealth.

When the farmer felt that his life had to come to an end, he called his three sons to him and said, “Dear sons, there is a pot of gold hidden somewhere in the olive orchard. Go and dig for it if you want it.”

The sons tried to ask him in which part he had put the gold, but he didn’t tell them. After the farmer died, the three sons went to dig for the gold although they didn’t know where the hiding-place was. They dug and dug until they turned the whole land upside down but no pot of gold was found. It seemed that someone might have stolen it. The three sons were disappointed to have all their work for nothing.

As the next olive season arrived, the olive trees in the orchard had more fruit than few years ago. When all the fruit was sold out, the three sons got a lot of gold from it.
