四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   For his seventh birthday, Rashard was given a gift that would define his life. His father took him to a music store and told Rashard he could pick out any instrument he wanted. There was just one requirement. Rashard would have to promise he would learn to play.

To that point, Rashard had not had much interest in music. Rashard was far more interested  in playing video games or occasionally baseball with his friends. He had never once thought about playing an instrument. It was hard for him to pick one on his birthday.

Not knowing where to start, Rashard wandered the music store. In the front of the store, he saw all the pianos. Though Rashard’s family did not live in poverty, he knew they were also not rich. He knew that a piano was too expensive, so he walked past the piano room. Next, he found a wall filled with brass instruments. There was a tuba, a saxophone, a trumpet, and something he could not tell. The salesman said it was a French horn. Rashard was not interested in any of those either, because he did not want to put his mouth on anything. He moved on to the large room filled with acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and basses. The salesman invited him to try out one of the guitars, but the only problem was that Rashard’s hands were too small to fit around the neck of the instrument!

Realizing he would not be able to play a guitar, Rashard moved into the next room of the music store. There, he found stringed instruments other than guitars. He picked up a violin, and he realized it was the perfect size for his small hands!

Rashard kept his promise to his dad. He took lessons at the very same store he bought the violin, and he continues to play it as an adult.

Though Rashard has since bought nicer violins, he always remembered the first one his  father bought for him. It was easily the most important gift Rashard ever received. As his father put it, “The gift of music is better than any video game you wanted when you were seven.”

1Which of the following words or phrases would best introduce the last sentence in paragraph2:“It was hard for him to pick one on his birthday.”?

    A.Besides B.However C.Because of this D.Even so

2Based on its use in paragraph 3, the underlined word poverty means being short of________.

    A.patience B.wisdom C.money D.talent

3Rashard’s decision to take the violin was most strongly influenced by ________ .

A.the price of the violin B.the size of the violin

C.the difficulty of playing the violin D.the sound the violin made

4Rashard saw each of the following instruments at the music store EXCEPT________ .

    A.a guitar B.a viola C.a tuba D.a piano

5It can be inferred from the passage that Rashard’s father________ .

A.played the violin B.did not like video games C.was wealthy D.valued music

  • 25、Facial recognition technology(人脸识别技术) is widely used today. For example, police use it to search for bad guys(家伙). It’s also used to unlock phones or doors.

Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection(探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising.

Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can tell a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.

Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings-from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.

Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.

Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy(隐私) group, is one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.

However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn’t store people’s information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or record any videos.

【1】Facial detection technology can tell people’s ______ according to the passage.

    A.weight

    B.feelings

    C.height

    D.jobs

【2】What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Businesses.

    B.Systems.

    C.Customers.

    D.Advertisements.

【3】We can infer from the text that facial detection technology ______.

A.can detect buyers’ names and record them

    B.can’t srore personal information

C.may he used to sell cheaper goods in all stores

D.may need some time before being widely used.

【4】The structure of the text is ______.

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【5】The text is mainly about ______.

A.facial recognition technology entering a new field

B.facial recognition technology looking for bad guys

C.facial detection technology going into advertising field

D.facial detection technology improving buyers’ experience

  • 26、   Trying to lose weight can be difficult, and while we all know exercise and diet are both  basic needs, which one is more important?

If you had to choose, should you be hitting the gym, or eating salads? There are many ways you can burn a few hundred calories (卡路里): running for 20 minutes, an hour of swimming, or singing your favourite song 23 times. But the point is, it takes time to burn a lot of calories even with most tiring activity - not to mention the time spent on the way to the gym, and then back home to clean up.

Now, compare this to the number of calories in a chocolate bar - which is often over 200 calories. You could either walk for about an hour to burn that 200 calories, or you could simply not eat that chocolate bar. Which sounds easier to you? How about running for 30 minutes every day or cutting out those two cans of soda? Many physicians point out that there is a lot of high-sugar, high-fat, high-calorie foods we could cut from our diet, to see weight loss results more quickly. And studies also show that diet does actually play a bigger role in weight loss than exercise. A survey of 2000 children found that the level of physical activity was not the main reason for their weight. And a study of 3000 adults discovered that cutting down calories was connected to greater weight loss than exercise alone.

Of course, exercise has many health advantages besides weight loss, like slowing the aging process and improving mental health. But at the end of the day, if you expect to lose weight, you’re likely to get more bang for your buck if you focus on your diet first.

    根据短文内容选择最佳答案。

1The underlined words “get more bang for your buck” most probably means  ________.

    A.更加合算 B.付出努力 C.怦然心动

2From the third paragraph mainly tells us that ________.

A.there is a lot of high-sugar, high fat, high-calorie foods in our daily diets

B.exercise like walking plays an important part in keeping our bodies healthy

C.your diet has a greater influence on your weight loss than exercise

    3The energy in a chocolate bar ________.

A.is as much as the energy we need for singing a song 23 times

B.may be burnt by walking for about half an hour

C.should not be added to a diet when you want to lose weight

4Which of following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.A survey of 3000 children found out that cutting down calories is more important

B.Exercise has many health advantages besides helping us lose weight

C.In fact, exercise is not needed when we want to lose weight

5Which of the following would you choose as the title of the passage?

A.Exercise VS Diet B.How To Lose Weight C.Different diets
