四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I’ll never forget that summer day in 1965 when my mother suddenly died of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer stopped by to ask my father if the hospital could use Mother’s corneas(角膜). I was shocked. “The doctors want to dissect Mum and give her away to other people!” I thought as I ran into the house in tears.

“How can you let them do that to her?” I screamed at my father. “My mum came into this world in one piece and that is how she should go out.”

“Linda,” Father said quietly, putting his arm around me, “the greatest gift you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago that if we can make a difference in just one person’s life after we die, our death will have meaning.” He went on to explain they had both decided to donate their organs(器官).

The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.

Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1980, my father became seriously ill and moved in with us. He cheerfully told me that when he died, he wanted me to donate his eyes. “Sight is one of the greatest gifts a person can give,” he said.

I told Wendy what her grandpa had said, and with tears in her eyes, she went into her grandpa’s room and gave him a big hug. She was only fourteen years old—the same age at which I was introduced to such a thing. What a difference!

My father died on April 11,1986, and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, Wendy said, “Mum, I’m so proud of you for what did for Grandpa.”

At that moment, I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes.

【1】How was it for the writer to agree the hospital’s use of her mother’s corneas?

    A.Easy

    B.Possible

    C.Simple

    D.Difficult

【2】According to the passage, the underlined word “dissect” may be best replaced by___________.

    A.cut up

    B.search for

    C.move away

    D.burn away

【3】Why did the writer finally agree on her mother’s donation?

A.Because she was afraid of her father

B.Because she didn’t care about it any more

C.Because she was too young to stop it.

D.Because her father explained to her

【4】What did Wendy think of her grandpa’s donation?

A.At first she couldn’t accept it, but she agreed in the end.

B.She begged her mother not to donate her grandpa’s eyes.

C.She felt proud of her grandpa’s donation

D.She thought it normal and didn’t car about it much.

  • 25、   The store was closing for the night. Young Alfred Higgins, the shop assistant, was ready to go home. Mr. Carr stared at him and said, “Hold on, Alfred. Maybe you’d be good enough to take the things out of your pockets and leave them here before you go.” Alfred’s face got red. After a few seconds, he took out what he had stolen. Mr. Carr said, “Maybe I should call your mother and let her know I’m going to have to put you in prison.”

Alfred thought his mother would come rushing in, eyes burning with anger. But, to his surprise, she arrived wearing a smile. “Hello, I’m Alfred’s mother. Is he in trouble?” she said. Mr. Carr was surprised, too. He had expected Alfred’s mother to come in nervously, shaking with fear, asking with wet eyes for a pardon for her son. But no, she was calm, quiet and pleasant and was making Mr. Carr feel guilty. Soon Mr. Carr was shaking his head in agreement with what she was saying. “You are right” he said, “Sometimes, a little good advice is the best thing for a boy at certain times in his life, and it often takes the youth long time to get sense into their heads.” And he warmly shook Mrs. Higgins’s hand.

Back home, without even looking at Alfred, the mother said, “You are a bad luck. It is one thing after another, always has been. Why do you stand there so stupidly? Go to bed. “In his bedroom, Alfred just took pride in his mother’s strength. He felt he must tell her how great she was. As he got to the kitchen, he was shocked by what he saw. His mother was lifting the tea cup, her hand shook, and her face became a frightened, broken one. It was no longer cool, bright as he saw earlier in the store. With her lips moving nervously, she looked so old.

Alfred watched his mother and he wanted to cry. He realized all the troubles he brought to his mother. It seemed that this was the first time he had ever really seen his mother, especially shaking hands and the deep lines of worry in her gray face. He knew his youth coming to an end.

  • 26、My mother comes up to my room and tells me that my father has got a new job. That’s why we’re moving. “Don’t you want to know where we’re going?” she asks. “Not really,” I say. She tells me anyway. I pretend not to listen.

Every day my parents tell me something about the town that will become our new home. There is a statue (雕塑) honoring hero, a strawberry festival every year and the mayor(市长) used to be a professional football player. There are oak trees in our new neighborhood, just like the one on our yard. Pictures of these begin to fill in my mind. I start wondering what it might be like to live in such a town. On the day before we leave, I walk in the direction as if I were going to school. When I see the tiny old lady, I tell her goodbye, and she tells me to carry an umbrella when it rains. Her tiny dog holds out a tiny paw to shake my hand. The man at the newspaper store shakes my hand, too. The twins wave to me as they get on the bus. I go home, walking slowly through streets lined with oak trees.

A large truck is parked in front of our house. The movers are carrying boxes while my parents are putting suitcases into our car. Soon our house will be empty, but not for long. I know that somewhere there are parents telling their children about a new town filled with oak trees, a place where they will meet nice people.

    D. to make him decide whether to move house or not

3Why does the writer take a walk on the day before the family moves?

    A. To say goodbye to what has been familiar(熟悉) to him.

    B. To visit the statue in the middle of town.

    C. To see if the same people are still in the same places.

    D. To be away from home when the movers come.

  • 27、   Smile Train is a charity (慈善团体) that helps the millions of children around the world, who suffer from a facial defect (缺陷). The defect happens when a baby's top lip or mouth doesn't form properly before birth. Eating and drinking is very difficult for these babies. The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new smile, and with it, new hope and a new beginning.

Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their families, sadly, others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often abandoned at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less than an hour and costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to perform the operations.

A Smile Train doctor from the UK said, “Each child who has the operation is given a second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and be happy. Every year I perform hundreds of operations free of cost through Smile Train. Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising.

One newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted (收养) by a passenger. This lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. I did the operation and gave hope to the family. Experienced doctors like me share our skills with local doctors. In this way make sure that these operations will always be available."

4What did the doctor from the UK think of his volunteer work?

    A.Dangerous B.Surprising C.Relaxing D.Valuable

5It can be inferred from the passage that________.
