24、“My dear Mr Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let (出租) at last?”
Mr Bennet replied that he had not.
“But it is,” returned she, “for Mrs Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”
Mr Bennet made no answer.
“Do not you want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently
“You want to tell me, and I have no objection (反对) to hearing it.”
This was invitation enough.
“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune (财富) from the north of England; that he came down on Monday to see the place, and was so satisfied with it that he agreed immediately with Mr Morris, the owner of Netherfield, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name?”
“Bingley.”
“Is he married or single?”
“Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; 4 or 5,000 a year. What a fine thing for our girls! It is probable that he may fall in love with one of them, and so you must visit him as soon as he comes.”
“I see no chance for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which
perhaps will be still better; for, as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr Bingley might like you the best of all.”
“But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood.”
“It is more than I can be sure, I assure (向……保证) you.”
“But consider your daughters. Sir William and Lady Lucas have decided to go, for in general, you know they visit no new comers. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for us to visit him, if you do not.”
But in fact Mr Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited to visit Mr Bingley. He had always planned to visit him, though to the last always assuring his wife that he should not go.
【1】How did Mrs Bennet feel when she heard that Bingley would move there?
A. Excited and hopeful. B. Nervous and curious.
C. Surprised and crazy. D. Pleased and proud.
【2】Why did Mr Bennet show no interest in Mr Bingley’s moving there when his wife talked about it?
A. Because his daughters were not pretty enough.
B. Because his wife was prettier than his daughters.
C. Because he didn’t care about his daughters’ happiness.
D. Because he didn’t want to show his true feelings to others.
【3】What does the underlined word “that” mean?
A. Mr Bingley had decided to live there.
B. Mr Bennet himself would visit Mr Bingley.
C. Mr Bingley would like Mrs Bennet best.
D. Mr Bingley would fall in love with one of their daughters.
【4】Why did Mrs Bennet mention “Sir William and Lady Lucas”?

C. To show it was polite for a couple to visit a new comer together.

25、In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus’ fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.
At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus’ group was soon in serious trouble.
Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse (月食) on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.
Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.
The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus’ god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.
【1】At first, the local people helped Columbus and his men by__________.

A. He discussed the problem with his god.
B. He waited for the eclipse to finish.
C. He read about the stars and planets.
D. He told his men what happened.
【4】What can we learn about the Europeans from the passage?
A. They all believed in god.
B. They never returned to Spain.
C. They admired the local people.
D. They caused their own problems.

Some people claim they “never forget a face”. But what does that saying mean? Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember? A new study at the University of York in England has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces.
The study is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces. The research team tested people on how many faces they could remember from their personal lives and in the media. They also tested them to see how many famous faces they recognized. Rob Jenkins works in the psychology department at the University of York. He said the researchers’ study centered on the number of faces people actually know. He said the researchers were not able to discover whether there is a limit on how many faces the brain can handle.
In the study, people spent one hour writing down as many faces from their personal lives as possible. At first, they found it easy to come up with many faces. But by the end of the hour, they found it harder to think of new ones. Their change in speed let the researchers estimate when they would have run out of faces completely.
The results showed that these people knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces. Jenkins explained that some people may have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information,” he said. Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. Therefore, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
The people in the study included 25 men and women between 18 and 61 years old. Researchers think age may be an interesting area for further research. “It would be interesting to see whether there is a peak age for the number of faces we know”, Jenkins said. He said it is possible that we gather more faces throughout our lifetime. But, he added, there also may he an age at which we start to find it harder to remember all of those faces.
The study suggests our facial recognition abilities enable us to deal with the many different faces we see on the screens, as well as those we know, like family and friends. Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence. Governments use it to keep secret areas secure and, in extreme cases, control populations. Even Facebook uses facial recognition. For example, when you “tag” or name a friend, Facebook technology may recognize the person’s face from a different picture you had shared before.

D.Facial recognition technology can improve social contact greatly.
【3】What does Rob Jenkins probably agree?
A.Remembering faces is not a natural ability for people.
B.People should gather more faces throughout their lifetime.
C.There is an age at which people can no longer know more faces.
D.People from a place with a large population may know more faces.
【4】What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?
