  • 24、   Pizza Hut has created a new way to get your favorite pie to you: through your shoes — Pie Tops II. Pie Tops I received so much popularity that Pizza Hut makes them available for sale, in more colors and more sizes than Pie Tops I.

I bought a pair of Pie Tops II and successfully ordered pizzas. It’s really cool and easy. Here’s something I did not expect when first wearing a pair of Pie Tops II: They are comfortable. Walking around in Pie Tops is perfectly fine.

There is a Pie Tops II app where users pair the shoes through Bluetooth. Users need a Pizza Hut account (账户) to place orders. Unluckily, you can’t order everything as you like, because it only accepts orders of Pizza Hut’s two medium pizzas for $5.99 each. • 26、I heard the following curious story from a railway acquaintance (相识的人). He was a gentleman of more than seventy years of age, and his good face and sincere manner put the stamp of truth on everything he said.

“You know, in Siam the royal white elephant is very important. It is sacred to kings, and only kings can have a white elephant. And white elephants are more important than the king.”

    Very well…five years ago…

After a misunderstanding between the countries, the King of Siam decides to send the Queen of England a present. This present must be a royal one. And what present can be as royal as a white elephant? It is my job to deliver the present to her Majesty the Queen. I travel with my servants, and the officers and helpers of the elephant, in a ship. Soon we arrive in New York harbour and I find a place for my royal elephant to stay in Jersey City. The elephant is not well and we must stay in New York until the doctors say he is better and can travel again.

_________________________________. I get a phone call in the middle of the night: the white elephant is stone! For some moments I feel helpless. Then I become calmer. There is only one thing I can do. I hurry to New York City and ask the first policeman that I meet to bring me to the headquarters (总部) of the police force. I am fortunate. The chief of the force, the well-known Inspector Blunt, is there. I tell him everything. He does not seem at all surprised. He asks me to sit down and says calmly, “Let me think for a moment, please.”

Then he sits down at his office table and leans his head on his hand. Some people are working at the other end of the room. For the next six or seven minutes the only sound I can hear is the sound of their pens. The inspector sits quietly, thinking. Finally he raises his head, and I can see from his face that he has a plan.

In a country where 1. 3 billion people speak 22 officially-recognized languages and hundreds of dialects (方言), communication online can be a problem.

Although there is a rapid rise in the number of Indian internet users who don’t speak English as the first language, 60% won’t shop online because of language problems.

Niki, a voice-enabled e-business app, is trying to solve this. It helps people to use voice commands (指令) to do shopping online. Users speak to the app in their preferred language, ordering products. Niki then presents buying choices from its product providers.

The company’s goal market is people who don’t live in cities and do not speak English In the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, the app has been used for more than 10 million online transactions (交易) since 2018. Now Niki can offer people service in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and English. The company is planning to introduce seven more languages, and hopes to carry out its business in 10 more states.

Thanks to a machine learning algorithm (算法), Niki is able to understand languages better and better. When the app first appeared, the algorithm only had a 65% accuracy (准确) rate. Now, it can deal with voice commands with 95% accuracy because of a bank of over 250 million conversations, Jaiswal says.

The app differs from typical online marketplaces. It limits the number of buying choices. Rather than offering many similar products as the supermarkets do, Niki presents a few quality - controlled objects from providers. That is more like a la sore.

When users speak to Niki in their native language, the app speaks back in the way of neighborhood shopkeeper. This “culture of service” is popular with many Indian people.

A.they aren’t able to use the Internet

    B.they have trouble using apps

C.they like to shop in the local store

    D.they have difficulty in communicating

【2】Which picture properly shows the relationship between accuracy and conversations?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【3】Which of the following is TRUE if people shop on Niki?

A.There are more products for them to choose.

B.It’s just like shopping in a supermarket.

C.They may like the way Niki talks with them.

D.It’s difficult for them to buy good products.

【4】What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.New apps develop quickly in India.
