25、One August afternoon, Richard Allen dropped off his last passenger, Mrs. Carey. Lifting two grocery bags, he followed her across the yard and stood on the step of her house. Glancing up, he saw a large wasp (黄蜂) nest under the roof. Allen had heard that wasps can become more likely to sting in summer. He mentioned this to Mrs. Carey, who had opened the door.
“Oh, they don’t bother me,” she said lightly. “I go in and out all the time.”
Anxiously, Allen looked at the nest again—to see the wasps flying straight at him. “Hurry!” he shouted to Mrs. Carey. “Get in!”
She stepped quickly inside. Allen ran for his mini-bus. Too late; they were upon him. Just as he jumped aboard, half a dozen red spots showed on his arm, and he felt more on his back and shoulders.
As he was driving down the road, Allen felt as if something was burning at the back of his neck, and the “fire” was spreading forward toward his face. And immediate anxiety took hold of him. Allen knew that stings could cause some persons to die. But he had been stung the previous summer and the after-effects soon passed. However, what he didn’t know was that the first sting had turned his body into a time bomb waiting for the next to set off an explosion.
Miles from the nearest medical assistance, Allen began to feel his tongue thick and heavy and his heartbeat louder. Most frightening, he felt his breathing more and more difficult. He reached for the radio mike (话筒), trying to call the mini-bus center, but his words were hardly understandable. Signals were also poor that far out. He knew a rescue team was on 24-hour duty at the Amherst Fire Department’s north station. So his best chance was to make a run for it.
Rushing down the mountain, Allen tried not to panic, focusing his mind on each sharp turn. He was almost through the last of them when he felt sure he was going into shock (休克). Just then he reached for the radio mike again.
“Call fire station,” he shouted, concentrating to form the words. “Emergency. Bee sting. Emergency. There in ten minutes.”
“Five-ten,” the center replied.
Hold on, Allen thought. Keep your eyes open. Breathe. Keep awake.
At last he reached the station. Two firemen ran out. Allen felt their hands grasped him before he hit the ground. “You made it,” he thought.

26、Have you ever wanted to try on clothes without going to the trouble of getting undressed? If you have, here’s the device for you: the virtual(虚拟的) fitting room.
The technology, designed by Russian company AR Door, was first tried out in May. When a customer walks into a “fitting” room, they’ll stand in front of a big screen that looks like a mirror. A camera in the mirror, using Microsoft Kinect, monitors a customer’s movement and projects a 3-D image of the clothes onto you while you stand before a screen.
The room also uses augmented reality technology. “Augmented reality allows the customers to choose an item of clothing without having to try it on physically,” the company told the Daily Mail. A customer can spin around to see all angles(角度) of the clothes, and can control the program by pushing virtual buttons.
AR Door is not the only company to be developing technology to help people with the way they look. Japanese company Shiseido recently presented its Magic Mirror, a virtual make-up mirror that allows people to get a full makeover in seconds.
However, the technology is not perfect. The clothes still seem to hang on the surface of the body, rather than look like the customer is actually wearing them. And people shopping for clothes are probably still better off actually trying them on.
In the end, you won’t know how something really looks and feels.

27、Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone in space exploration. On Jan 3, Chang’e 4 became the first space probe in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon, People’s Daily reported.
From Earth, we can only see one side of the moon. The other side has been a mystery. Scientists have long wondered what lies on this side of the moon.
Chang’e 4 has sent back photos of the far side of the moon. It is also being used to carry out experiments, such as growing seeds in a low-gravity environment. The data collected from these experiments could be used to help us build a base on the moon in the future.
The success of the Chang’e 4 mission is a major achievement for China’s space program. It marks a new stage in China’s deep space exploration, said Wu Yanhua, deputy head of China National Space Administration.
China launched its lunar exploration program in 2004, naming it Chang’e. Chinese scientists set three goals – “orbiting , landing and sample returning” – referring to launching probes that could circle around the moon, touch down on its surface and bring lunar materials back to Earth.
Chang’e 4 has realized the second goal. The third will be achieved during the Chang’e 5 mission , which is set to take place before the end of this year, China Daily reported.
Following the success of the Chang’e missions, Chinese scientists are looking even farther into our solar system . China’s first Mars mission is expected to be carried out by 2020, Wu said.
In addition to the first-ever soft landing on the far side of the moon, the Chang’e 4 mission has achieved many other firsts. One of them is international cooperation and joint exploration. The experiments will provide valuable data for the scientists .
