24、There are many things we need to know that we do not learn at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely, we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare the prices of things in different shops. We need to be able to compare the quality of different brands(品牌). We need to know how to make a choice when we shop.
Knowing how to make such choices is a “life skill”, and we need these skills if we are to live useful and happy lives.
Some of these choices are small. For example, will I take an apple for lunch or a pear? Will I go to school by bus or on foot? Will I wear the red T-shirt or the blue one to the movies? Other choices are more important. For example, will I eat healthy food for lunch or will eat junk food because it is tastier? Will I work hard in all my classes or will I only work hard in the classes I enjoy? We make choices like this every day.
We have to realize that the choices we make can affect the rest of our lives. Just as importantly, our choices can also affect other people. The next time you decide to waste time in class, play a joke on someone or talk loudly at the movies, think about this: who else does your choice affect?

25、 Many people believe the glare(刺眼的光) from snow causes snow blindness. Yet, with dark glasses or not, they find themselves suffering from headaches and watering eyes, and even snow blindness when staying in snow light for several hours.
The United States army has now discovered that glare from snow does not cause snow blindness in troops(军队) in a snow-covered country. In fact, a man’s eyes often find nothing to focus on in a broad space of snow-covered land. So his eyes keep moving over the whole landscape in search of something to look at. Finding something, hour after hour, the eyes never stop searching and the eyeballs become tired and the eye muscles ache. Nature makes up for this discomfort by producing more and more fluid (液体) which covers the eyeball. The fluid covers the eyeball more and more until it makes eyes difficult to see clearly, and the result is completely snow blindness, even though for a short time.
Experiments led the army to a simple method of solving this problem. Scouts (侦察员) ahead of the troops are trained to shake snow from evergreen bushes, creating a dotted line as they cross completely snow-covered landscape. Even the scouts themselves throw lightweight, dark-colored objects ahead which they can look at, too. The men following can then see something. Their eyes focus on a bush and having found something to look at, stop searching the snow-blanketed landscape. By focusing their attention on one object at a time, the men can cross the snow without becoming hopelessly snow-blind or lost. In this way the problem of crossing a continuous white land is solved.

27、 New trains run across mountains and the Great Wall to the north of Beijing like bullets(子弹). They run on a high-speed railway line connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou that came into service in the last month of 2019.
The railway is an important support project for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The 174-km railway’s trains move at a top speed of 350 km/h. This reduces the travel time between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the host cities of the Winter Games, from over three hours to only 47 minutes.
Some of the trains on this railway are smart trains that can run by themselves. With the help of Beidou, they can start, run between stations, change their timing according to the schedule, accurately stop at a station, and open and close their doors. Passengers can also watch live events during the Winter Olympics on the train which is equipped with 5G technology.
Some people refer to Zhan Tianyou as “the father of China’s railways”. He led construction on the old Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway, China’s first independent-designed railway.
Back in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), building a railway without foreign help was thought to be impossible. But Zhan, the main engineer of the railway project, believed that it could be done. After overcoming many difficulties, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou line was put into service in 1909. Its trains ran at 35 km/h.
