四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、There are robots all around us. Some do difficult jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains. Some just do one simple job, like washing clothes. They do these by “feedback” (反馈).

We human beings receive feedback through our eyes, ears and other senses (感官), which tell us what is going on around. Robots are kind of like human beings in two ways: they work and they have feedback. Information about what is happening is “fed back” into the robot to tell it what to do next.

There are robots taking care of the temperature of our houses, cookers, and hot water systems. We set the controls to the temperature we want and leave the rest to the robot. Its feedback usually comes from a thermostat (温控器). One kind of thermostat is a metal strip (金属条板), which bends (弯曲) when it gets hot. At the right temperature, it bends just enough to turn off the heat. As the air around it cools, the strip becomes straight, which turns the heat on again.

Some robots are created to work in factories. They are taught to do different jobs. First, their “brains” are shown how the job needs to be done. A person moves the “arms” and “hands” of the robot through each part of the job as the robot’s brain records each move. After that, the robot is set to work on its own. If something gets in the way, the robot will stop until a human engineer comes to solve the problem. When it is needed for a new job, its memory is deleted. Then it will be taught how to do the new work.

The most clever robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their fingers can feel shapes and even find out how hot and cold objects are. These robots have computer brains, connected to their eyes and fingers, which control their actions.

There are robots all around, making our lives easier. In some ways, they are better than human beings. They work quickly, hardly making any mistakes. They do the same jobs over and over again, never getting bored or tired.

【1】According to the passage, which of the statements is NOT true?

A.Robots mainly work by receiving feedback.

B.Not only can robots do easy jobs, but they can do hard ones.

C.Some robots can set the temperature right through a thermostat.

D.Robots working in factories are controlled by the metal strip.

【2】In this passage, the writer tells us that ________.

    A.robots should be greatly improved

C.robots will probably take over in the future

D.we see robots only at certain times

B.the robots are controlled by engineers all the time

C.when the robots are given a new job, their memory will be cleaned off

D.most robots can do several jobs at a time

Around the world, people have different traditional foods to celebrate different festivals. Traditional foods also show a new year of good luck and good health:

An English Christmas dinner has a meal of turkey, and it also includes pies and plum puddings(李子布丁). In Germany, Christmas is celebrated with bread, cookies and cakes, which are made like Christmas trees. In France, Christmas dessert is a cake filled with butter cream.

In southern parts of India, there is a three-day festival in mid-January called Pongal. It includes rice and a dish of rice cooked with sugar that is shared with families and friends.

Japan celebrates New Year with a seven-day festival. It begins from January 1st. Food is prepared before the festival so people don’t need to cook during the festival. On New Year’s Day, various dishes called Osechi ryori (御节料理) are served--each dish is a wish for the New Year.

In most Asian countries, the New Year begins with the first full moon of the first Chinese Lunar(阴历的) month. Each place has its special food to welcome the coming year: People in China prepare their food ahead of time to avoid the possibility that using a knife during New Year’s time might “cut luck”. Foods with lucky names are popular, such as fish, which sounds like “surplus(剩余)”.

  • 26、   A good joke can be the hardest thing to understand when studying a foreign language.

There’s more to learn understanding a joke in a foreign language than understanding vocabulary and grammar.

Being able to understand local jokes is often seen as an ice-breaker for a language learner who wants to build friendships with native speakers.

“I always felt that humor was a ceiling(上限)that I could never break through,” said Hannah Ashley, who once studied Spanish in Madrid. “I could never speak to people on the same level as I would speak to a native English speaker. I almost came across as quite a boring person because all I could talk about was facts.”

In fact, most of the time, jokes are only funny for people who share a cultural background or understand humor in the same way.

Сhіnеѕе-Аmеrісаn соmеdіаn(喜剧演员)Jое Wоng(Нuаng Хі)fоund thіѕ оut fіrst-hаnd(亲身经历). He had achieved great success doing stand-up comedy(美式单口相声)in the US, but when he returned to China in 2008 for his first live show in Beijing, he discovered that his humor didn’t translate. People didn’t think his Chinese jokes were as funny as his English ones.

In Australia, many foreigners find understanding jokes about sports to be the biggest headache. “The hardest jokes are related to rugby(橄榄球)because I know nothing about rugby,” said Melody Cao, who was once a student in Australia. “When I heard jokes I didn’t get, I just laughed along.”

In the other two major English-speaking countries, the sense of humor is also different. British comedian Simon Pegg believes that while British people use irony(讽刺)—basically, saying something they don’t mean to make a joke—every day, people in the US don’t see the point of using it so often. “British jokes tend to(倾向于)be more subtle (不易察觉)and dark, while American jokes are direct with their meanings, a bit like Americans themselves,” he wrote in a newspaper.

1By using the underlined sentence, the writer means that .

A.you need to learn about a culture to understand its jokes

B.local jokes can help you to understand the local culture better

C.making jokes can help you form friendships with native speakers

D.understanding jokes requires excellence in vocabulary and grammar

2What can we guess about Hannah Ashley?

A.She feels confident in using Spanish.

B.She believes that it’s better to tell the facts than jokes.

C.She thinks that Spanish people do not have much of a sense of humor.

D.Not being able to understand their humor makes her seem boring to Spanish people.

3Joe Wong is used as an example to .

A.prove that it can be difficult to translate jokes

B.show that there are cultural differences in humor

C.show that your language ability influences your sense of humor

D.suggest that bilingual people(双语者)have no problems making people laugh

    4What are American jokes like?

    A.Ironic. B.Subtle. C.Direct. D.Dark.

5From the article, we can learn that   .

A.Americans might not be able to enjoy British jokes

B.British people’s dark jokes often make people uncomfortable

C.English native speakers can all understand English jokes easily

D.jokes about sports are the most difficult ones for foreign people

  • 27、When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn’t a good student. Sometimes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to stand her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark(标记) the points(点) that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me and to my surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.

I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”

Many years has passed. The situation often appears(出现) in my mind. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure(珍惜) all your life!
