Marks also needed help with some everyday tasks. “I don’t have any family close by. My son is working. There is no way he could have helped,” she said.

“Barbara and I get along so well, ” Golan said. “We have a lot of fun chatting together. I care about her. She's like a new friend.” It might sound crazy hiring a stranger to act as a grandchild. However, these young people are a great help to old people who live alone.

25、 One Sunday. Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home. a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far. he accidentally turned off (使改变方向 ) the path. Before he knew it. Nicholas was lost. all alone! He didn't have food. water. a phone or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried to calm down. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed where he was. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't. his body temperature would get very low. Which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis. Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself. Like a blanket. to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could - he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave. Because without shelter. He could die that night. On Tuesday. Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow. Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm if he hadn't done so. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each programme of Man vs. Wild, Grills is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

26、The world’s largest reef (礁), the Great Barrier Reef, has lost more than half of its coral (珊瑚) cover in the past 30 years because of global (全球) warming. The beauty of the Australian coast has been left lifeless.
Scientists have been trying to find ways to save it, and now they may have found a special helping hand---volcanoes(火山).
During a volcano eruption(火山喷发),wherever hot lava(岩浆) goes, villages and plants are burned right down to the ground. How could it possible save life on Earth?
When the lava goes into the ocean, it quickly cools down and becomes light rocks that can float in the water. For example, in 2006, shortly after the eruption of a volcano near Tanga, a southwest Pacific island, scientists found many large rocks floating on the ocean. These rocks traveled a long way from the island to Australia over the next eight months.
But they didn’t just float during this time—they acted like little lifeboat. Scientists found that the rocks “picked up” more than 80 kinds of corals, crabs and other life animals on their way, before arriving at the Great Barrier Reef.
Once near the reef, these animal “passengers” can easily jump onto the rocks and go to their new home. “It’s like a boat of people landing on an island,” Judith Winston, a biologist at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, US, told Scientific American.
Since volcanoes have been on Earth for all of history, scientists say these “Lifeboats” might have even helped form the Great Barrier Reef in the first place.

27、A new report says promising children money to pass exams does not help their exam grades. It could be a waste of money using cash to get kids to study more. However, the promise of a trip could encourage students to try harder and do better at school. Scientists looked at how promises of money and tickets to shows affected students’ studying and learning. Over 10, 000 pupils took part in the survey in 2016. There was an improvement in homework, but this did not result in better test scores.
Lead researcher Dr Simon Burgess thought the survey showed something important and interesting. He said it had not found something that really got students to work harder. He added that, “Clearly, some pupils have a lot of goals and believe that education is very important in life, but there are kids who think that working hard doesn’t make a difference. He said these children think exam success is “all in your genes(基因)” because of their family background.
Education expert Dr Kevan Collins said good teachers were better than promises of rewards to get children to study, especially for children from low-income families. He wrote, “What really makes difference is how students are taught.”

28、 English and Chinese are totally different language. However, some proverbs (谚语) in English seem to have a “twin” in Chinese. Here are three of them.
Double-edged sword (双刃剑). / Water can carry a boat, and it can also overturn it.
The Chinese proverb was 【1】(one) used by Confucius. He reminded a ruler that his power was 【2】 (base) on people who supported him. If the people were dissatisfied, they could easily fight 【3】 the ruler. Similarly, double-edged sword reminds us that what brings us power can bring us harm, too.
These days, both expressions are used to point out how our tools can 【4】 help or harm us. It all depends on how we use these tools.
Think before you act. / Think three times, and act after.
Both cultures are 【5】 /waɪz/ enough to include this proverb. It is a good phrase to use when any friend is going to make a big 【6】(decide).
Stands head and shoulders above the rest. / A crane standing among a group of chickens.
A crane is a large 【7】/bɜː(r)d/ with long legs and a long neck. Just imagine such an animal 【8】(stand) among many chickens. The crane will naturally stand out, won’t it?
So these two expressions now 【9】/rɪˈfɜː(r)/ to someone who stands out from the rest. You may use them to describe 【10】 talented artist, an excellent job candidate, and so on.
