24、 You probably see a lot of things made of plastic, like bottles and bags, every day. What happens when that plastic gets thrown away? Scientists say much of it ends up in oceans and causes problems for creatures(生物)like fish and birds.
“Plastic puts ocean creatures in danger," says Allison Schutes of the Ocean Conservancy. That's a group that works to protect the world's oceans.
A recent study shows that each minute, enough plastic reaches the ocean to fill up one garbage truck! That same study predicts that by the year 2050, our oceans will have more plastic than fish.
All that plastic is bad news for ocean life. Some ocean creatures die when they get tangled(使缠结)in pieces of plastic. Others accidentally eat it and die, too.
Most scientists say taking out all the plastic that's already in the ocean would be impossible. Instead, they say the best way is to prevent more plastic from getting there.
Many groups are already taking action. They organize cleanups on beaches to pick up litter before it reaches the ocean. ▲ , volunteers from the Ocean Conservancy collected more than 16 million pounds of it last year!
Experts also encourage people to use less plastic. Many cities and towns in America have banned plastic shopping bags. Experts also suggest that people drink out of reusable bottles and try reusable shopping bags.
“These seem like small things," says Schutes, "but they can help make a big difference.”

25、 It’s said that both work and play are important for a developing mind. Though it may be crucial (重要的) for everyone to work hard, it is also important to relax from time to time.
In 2018, the average (平均数) amount of leisure (闲暇) time for Chinese people was 2.84 hours per day, higher than 2017’s average of 2.27 hours, according to the China Media Group (CMG).
CMG’s surveys focus (聚焦) on the happiness of China’s population. The surveys, which began in 2006, cover many areas, including leisure time, vacations and spending habits. Each year, CMG surveys around 10,000 households across the country.
The surveys also showed what people prefer to do during their leisure time. Seven in ten people enjoy surfing the internet, while 55 percent like to watch TV and 46 percent prefer shopping.

In general, people are happier when they have more leisure time, the survey suggests. Having enough leisure time has even become more important than income (收入) for Chinese people.
However, it is still important to work as well. Working hard during part of the day makes leisure time more valuable and enjoyable, CCTV News reported.

26、 Many people say that the United States is a paradise for the children, a struggling field for the youth and a tomb for the aged. However, the situation is quite different in Australia. Different people have their own ways for enjoyment and their own worlds of pastime.
Most children often work hard in school since they have to face various exams. After school they do not want to confine themselves to books any more. Instead, they put aside their schoolbags at home and sneak quickly to some quiet street comers for their games. Bigger children like to shoulder their large kites to some steep cliffs, and jump to fly in the sky with their kites.
Some old people often get up early in the morning and go to parks to do newspaper reading. After breakfast, they come to horse races, dog races and sometimes car races for betting. If he wins, he will feed himself a good dinner. In the evening, they stay at home, watching TV sometimes with grandchildren. Some of the aged also enjoy fishing and gardening.
Young people prefer to go outing for holidays. At the weekends, they go to the seashore for swimming or to the forest for hunting and camping, or mountainous areas for picnicking. Then in the evenings on Sundays, they start their long bumper-to-bumper drive back on the highways. Nobody seems in a hurry.
The Australian government also encourages its people to have more relaxation after work. Sometimes, certain kind of financial help is distributed to people going on holidays and public holidays are purposely set on Monday or Friday so that Australians may have a longer weekend for enjoyment. They think people can work better only after they get a full relaxation. And it grows out of this idea that relaxation comes the top priority(优先权)for enjoyment in Australia.

27、 People in Western countries are eating less meat these days, whether for their health or because they want to protect animals. But now they have another reason.
Eating less meat can help to prevent climate change, according to a recent study published in Nature.
Raising livestock (家畜) is bad for the environment. When animals like cows digest (消化) food, their stomachs make greenhouse gases, which are a major cause of global warming. Seventeen percent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from livestock farming, The New York Times reported.
In addition, to raise these livestock, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they absorb greenhouse gases.
Eating less meat according to certain guidelines could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found. Keeping a vegetarian diet in the long term could bring down emissions by 63 percent.
But eating less meat won’t be easy. According to the study, people in Western countries will need to eat 90 percent less meat than they do now in order to have an impact (影响) on our climate. Scientists are now trying to find new foods to replace meat.
Some say that insects could help. A 2013 UN report said that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. They produce 75 percent less greenhouse gases than livestock.
Some experts are creating lab-grown meat. They make meat in a lab using livestock cells (细胞). In March, US company JUST said people in the US might be able to buy its lab-grown meat by the end of this year
