1、I think it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. It is not enough to just get good grades at school. 61Children these days depend on their parents too much. They are always asking, 62“你能给我拿一下这个吗?”or “Could you help me with that?” Doing chores helps to develop children’s independence and teaches them how to look after themselves. 63It also helps them to understand the idea of fairness. Since they live in one house with their parents, they should know that everyone should do their part in keeping it clean and tidy. Our neighbors’son got into a good college but during his first year,64他不知道怎样照顾自己.As a result, he often fell ill and his grades dropped.65.The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.

I would like to talk to you about space vegetables, and to show you that space vegetables are healthy and good for you.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds(种子) that have been taken to and brought back from outer space. The seeds are affected by radiation and low gravity in outer space. When they are brought back to the Earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger, healthier and more nutritious (有营养的)than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could give us cancer as a result of their exposure (暴露)to radiation in space. People should not be scared, as space vegetables are actually perfectly healthy.
Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables:
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully selected. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that the vegetables they grow will be safe to eat. There are no traces of radiation after testing.
Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes. Another popular space vegetable is the pepper(辣椒). Space peppers contain 20 per cent more Vitamin C than normal peppers.
After genetically modified(改进的) foods come onto the market, people worry that they are eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes are put inside potatoes, people allergic(对...过敏) to nuts might get very sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified foods, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, they won’t damage your health.

25、“The world’s oceans are slowly getting more acidic,” say scientists. The researchers from California report that the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The lowering of the water’s PH value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat to current ocean life if it continues, they warn. Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature.
Increasing use of oil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid. Scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century.
These researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change. “This level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing CO2 into the atmosphere,” said Dr. Caldeira. “And we predict the amount of future acidity will exceed (超过) anything we have seen over the last several hundred million years, let alone perhaps after rare disastrous events such as asteroid impacts.”
However, it is not absolutely clear what that means for ocean life. Most organisms live near the surface, where the greatest PH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean life forms may be more sensitive to PH changes. Coral reefs and other organisms whose shells contain calcium carbonate (小行星) may be particularly affected if the water’s acidity levels keep going up, the team predict. They could find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower PH.
In recent years some people have suggested storing carbon dioxide from power stations in the deep ocean as a way of dealing with global warming. But Dr. Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered. “Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing--because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet, and when CO2, is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.”
【1】According to Dr. Caldeira, ________.
A.ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thing

C.scientists may predict climate changes with computer models
D.the future situation of the amount of acidity is extremely serious

A.ocean life whose structures contain calcium carbonate may be affected
B.the waters’ PH value will become higher and higher
C.organisms living near the surface are more sensitive to pH changes
D.some disastrous events will occur more often than before

26、Do you get enough sleep? With so much homework, it’s often difficult to get the rest you need. But you need to try, because sleep keeps you healthy and it stops you getting fat.
Recently, a group of US scientists did a study of kids aged between 8 and 13. The studt found that if kids sleep for just one extra hour each day, the chance of their getting fat is cut by about 30%.
Why? When people don’t get enough sleep, they become tired. When they are tired, they don’t exercise enough. Also, kids like snacks. If they are awake an extra hour or two each day, they have more time to eat snacks or other unhealthy foods.
So, how much sleep should you get? Scientists suggest 10 to 11 hours a night for kids aged 5 to 12. For older kids, eight to nine hours will do.
【1】How many reasons are given why people might get fat without enough sleep?
A. 4 B. 3 C.2 D. 1
【2】If you are 9, how long do the scientists advice you to sleep?
A. 10 to 11 hours B.8 to 9 hours
C. 8 to 13 hours D. 8 to 11 hours
【3】Where was the study done by the scientists?
A. In China. B. In Britain.
C. In Canada. D. In America.
【4】What does “eight to nine hours will do” mean?
A. Eight to nine hours’ sleep will be good and enough
B. Eight to nine hours’ sleep will be too long.
C. Eight to nine hours’ sleep will help get fat.

【5】What does the passage talk about?
A. How to get long sleep.
B. How to keep fat.
C. Enough sleep makes people healthy and slim.
D. Sleep more to keep healthy.
