21、One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son’s school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching(干呕)into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.
What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare(噩梦). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.
Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it’s taking part, not winning, that’s important; or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.
Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting—and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone’s eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.
I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.

22、It is never too late to try to make your dreams come true. This could be Mary Moe’s motto—the expression that best presents her spirit. Mary Moe has done a lot during the past 91 years. For much of that time, she wanted to fly, but never had the chance—until now. She recently achieved her life-long dream.
Mary just learned how to fly an airplane, a dream she has had since she was a little girl. Growing up, she was inspired by two American pilots: Charles Lindburgh Amelia Earhart. They became her inspiration. Lindbugh made the solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. Five years later, Earhart became the first woman to make the flight. But Mary Moe could not find time to make her dream come true. At age 34, she was just too busy—busy fighting cancer. She was also busy with her job in advertising and busy raising her family.
There was simply no time to think about flying a plane. And it was difficult for her to drive to the airport. Lessons were costly. Everything seemed to be working against Mary.
“I had actually gone out to that airport in the 1980s to see about flying lessons and it was such a long drive out and expensive and I thought, ‘No, I have to put this back burner for a while.’” So her dream had to wait. She kept it on the back burner. Then, at age 91, her wish finally came true.
Ms Moe learned about Wish of a lifetime. Wish of a Lifetime is a non-profit organization whose goal is to change the way our society thinks about aging and older adults.
Sally Webster works for the group. Wish of Lifetime helps older people, senior citizens, enjoy a dream. It also sends the message that it is never too late for a dream. So they really try to look for those stories that are inspiring and can show people that older Americans can achieve things just like younger Americans can.
【1】 In her thirties, Mary Moe must have ___________
A. lived a smooth life B. been unemployed
C. spent a hard time D. learned how to fly
【2】The underlined part is closest in meaning to “_____________”
A. set this down B. put this off

23、One day a friend asked my wife Jill if I wanted a hearing aid. “He certainly does,”replied Jill. After hearing about a remarkable new product, Jill finally got up the nerve to ask me if I’d ever thought about getting a hearing aid. “No way,”I said. “It would make me look 20 years older.”“No, no”she replied. “This is entirely different. It’s Crystal Ear!”
Jill was right. Crystal Ear is different –––– not the old-styled body worn or over-the-ear aid, but an advanced personal sound system so small it’s like contacts for your ears. And Crystal Ear is super-sensitive and powerful, too. You will hear sounds your ears have been missing for years. Crystal Ear will make speech louder, and the sound is pure and natural.
I couldn’t believe how tiny it is. It is smaller than the tip of my little finger and it’s almost invisible when worn. There are no wires, no behind-the-ear device. Put it in your ear and its-ready-to-wear mold fits comfortable. Since it’s not too loud or too light, you may even forget that you’re wearing it! Use it at work or at play. And if your hearing problem is worse in certain situation, use Crystal Ear only when you need it.
Hearing loss, which is typically prior to teenage years, progresses throughout one’s lifetime. Although hearing loss is now the world’s number-one health problem, nearly 90 percent of people suffering hearing loss choose to leave the problem untreated. For many millions, treating hearing loss in a conventional way can involve numerous office visits, expensive testing and adjustments to fit your ear. Thanks to Crystal Ear, the “sound solution”is now convenient. Almost 90 percent of people with mild hearing loss, and millions more with just a little hearing dropoff, can be dramatically helped with Crystal Ear. Moreover, its superior design is energy-efficient, so batteries can last months. Crystal Ear is now available to help these people treat their hearing loss with a small hearing amplifier(扩音器).
【1】 Why did the writer refuse to wear a hearing aid at first?
A. It would make him look like an old man
B. He did not get the nerve to wear one
C. It looked old-styled.
D. It was too costly
【2】We can infer from the passage that _____ .
A. Crystal Ear can signal where it is in case you cannot find it
B. you can wear Crystal Ear any time you like
C. you can even clean Crystal Ear yourself
D. you can even wear while swimming
【3】 What does the writer say about hearing loss?
A. About 10 percent of people wear hearing aids.
B. About 90 percent of people suffer hearing loss.
C. It is one of the most painful diseases in the world.
D. Hearing loss is the world’s most frequent health problem.
24、 China has taken new measures to boost new-energy vehicle (NEV) and home appliance consumption. On June 6, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Ecological Environment and the Ministry of Commerce jointly released a guideline. It aims to upgrade the country’s consumption and form a strong domestic market in 2020.
According to the guideline, the cost of NEV production will be largely lowered and the research of a new generation of NEV batteries will be accelerated. Local governments are strictly banned from imposing any limit on the consumption and use of NEVs. Places where the limits exist should call them off. The guideline also encourages local governments to subsidize (补贴) the purchase of first NEVs of car-free families and reduce parking fees for NEVs. In this way, the move would help meet the demand for millions of vehicles in cities across the country, analysts say.
Amid the flat market in China’s auto industry, “methods to boost consumption in the auto market are still being rolled out in first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai,” said Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association.
Some netizens held that the measures could be difficult to carry out in metropolises due to traffic pressure. Cui responded that “the traffic problems could be eased by upgrading the traffic management systems.” Cities like Beijing and Shanghai should address traffic problems in different areas based on their different levels of congestion (堵塞) through corresponding driving restrictions. The restrictions on NEVs could also be eased in some far-reaching areas in the cities, he explained.
China saw strong and healthy sales growth of NEVs in the first four months this year with 360, 000 NEVs sold, jumping by 59.8 percent from the same period a year earlier. The market could see a new round of increases under the efforts, according to industry experts.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One of the most pleasant sounds in sports is the whoosh of a basketball moving quickly into the netting. Take away the net and all that is left is the unsatisfying silence of a ball pushing air around as it sails through the rim (篮圈). Did it even go through? Sometimes it’s hard to tell.
So it was really a shame that in a small American town to which Anibal Amador moved from New York, there was no basketball net on any basketball court in any park. The retired worker was a basketball addict and so was his son, Frank, a high school student. When they had time, they would go to the nearby playground in the park and join the players there in playing basketball. However, without the nets, it just didn’t feel good and satisfactory. As a matter of fact, no one would like to play that way, for they couldn’t shoot the ball to their hearts’ content. Anibal often heard the players complain about it from time to time.
That was really something that bothered Anibal. One evening on their way home, he mentioned the problem to Frank, who suggested they should do something about it. Soon they took action. They took advantage of their spare time and did careful field research into the playgrounds around the neighborhood. Then Anibal visited the website of the town park department which was in charge of the basketball courts, uploaded what they had surveyed and put forward the suggestion that nets should be attached to the rims on basketball courts.
They waited and waited. After a long time, they finally got the response. The town park department said that nets were non-durable goods. If they did as suggested, they would have to be putting up nets all the time and maintaining so many basketball courts was a great expense, which they couldn’t afford. It wasn’t workable to keep nets on all the rims in all the parks, so they were terribly sorry that they couldn’t manage it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Anibal and Frank decided to address the problem on their own.
