二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   After a nail salon turns away a physically challenged woman, a stranger makes a truly beautiful gesture, 'Beauty isn't about having a pretty face. It’s about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul, oh, and pretty nails! ' That may well be Angela Peter's motto. Last July, Peters, 36, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon at the Walmart shopping center in Burton, Michigan, with the idea of painting her fingers. But Peters was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands shook. What was meant to be a day of happiness for Peters was now a disappointment.

Ebony Harris, 40, saw everything and approached Peters. Harris offered to do her nails. They shopped for nail polish. They settled on a bright blue-a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighbouring Subway, found a table for two, and set up shop. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. Watching it al with awe and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. What struck her most was the ease and gentleness displayed by Harris as she painted Peters' nails, all the while chatting as if they were old friends.

Peters, who runs a poetry website, heavenlypoems.com, harbors no bitterness towards the nail salon that turned her away. The salon says they refused to offer Peters service because they were too busy. 'When people do us wrong, we must forgive, ' Peters wrote on her website. 'I just want to educate people that people with different disabilities, like being in a wheelchair, can have our own business and get our nails done like anyone else. '

1Why did Peters go to the Walmart shopping centre?

A.To go shopping. B.To eat at a Subway.

C.To meet her friend Harris. D.To have her nails painted.

    2What caused Peters' disappointment?

A.She was disabled. B.She was refused.

C.The salon was busy. D.She had no nail polish.

3How do you find Ebony Harris?

    A.Mean. B.Optimistic.

    C.Caring. D.Stubborn.

4What can we infer from the passage?

A.It's better to use websites to educate people.

B.The salon had its acceptable reason to decline a disabled woman.

C.Those who did something wrong should not be forgiven.

D.People with different challenges should be treated equally.

  • 22、As is often the case, technology eliminates old jobs, but it also creates new ones---the job title radiology technician(放射技师), for example, has been included in data only since 1990. Transitioning to a new type of work is never easy, however, and it might be particularly difficult for many in the service industry. New jobs that arise due to the development of technology tend to require skills that laid-off workers don’t have. A college education helps protect workers from automation, enabling them to develop the kind of skills, judgment, and problem-solving abilities that robots can’t match. Yet nearly 80 percent of workers in food preparation and service-related occupations have a high-school diploma or less, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The better hope for workers might be that automation helps the food-service industry continue to develop. Because of its app that allows online ordering, Panera is now processing more orders overall, which means it needs more total workers to fulfill customer demand. Starbucks customers who use the chain’s app return more frequently than those who don’t, and the greater efficiency that online ordering allows has increased sales at busy stores during peak hours. Starbucks employed 8 percent more people in the U.S. in 2016 than it did in 2015, the year it launched the app.

Of course, whether automation is a net positive for workers in restaurants, and not just a competitive advantage for one chain over another (more business for machine-enabled Panera, less for the Luddites at the local deli), will depend on whether an improved customer experience makes Americans more likely to dine out, rather than brown-bagging it.

That could be the case. James Bessen, an economist at Boston University School of Law, found that as the number of ATMs in America increased fivefold from 1990 to 2010, the number of bank tellers (出纳员) also grew. Bessen believes that ATMs drove demand for consumer banking: No longer restricted by a branch’s limited hours, consumers used banking services more frequently, and people who were unbanked opened accounts to take advantage of the new technology. Although each branch employed fewer tellers, banks added more branches, so the number of tellers grew overall. And as machines took over many basic cash-handling tasks, the nature of the tellers’ job changed. They were now tasked with talking to customers about products---a certificate of deposit, an auto loan---which in turn made them more valuable to their employers. “It’s not clear that automation in the restaurant industry will lead to job losses,” said Bessen.

【1】What can be learned about workers in food preparation and service-related occupations from the first paragraph?

A.They are not fully informed of the development of technology.

B.Most of them could hardly afford to go to college while young.

C.Their education may not prevent them being replaced by robots.

D.They have not been aware of the potential impact of automation.

【2】What can be concluded from paragraph 2?

A.Automation can do good to employment rate.

B.Efficiency decreases with the increase of sales.

C.Customer demand is not easy to fulfill these days.

D.Starbucks offered the most positions in the year of 2016.

【3】What can be inferred from paragraph 3 about the Luddites?

A.It used to be much more popular than Panera.

B.It hasn’t introduced automation into its business.

C.It hasn’t tried to improve customer experience.

D.It used to provide customers with brown bags.

【4】Why is the story of ATMs mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To describe how tellers’ tasks changed.

B.To show that automation may not cause job losses.

C.To explain why we should take advantage of technology.

D.To suggest what employees can do to make themselves more valuable.

  • 23、   Since I was born, I have been listening to music all the time. Not just any music, but the right kind of music.

It may seem strange to say that, but hearing good music played well by a big music group is something that a lot of people no longer experience. Most people are musically illiterate (了解不多的) simply because they have never had any chance to listen to good music. Many people are unfamiliar with the sound of a symphony orchestra (交响乐团). They only hear orchestra music while watching ads and films. But to me a symphony orchestra is the biggest instrument in the world. To hear a full symphony orchestra on stage and to feel the power of the sound—it is like a big wave. It is an amazing experience and it is one that I was lucky enough to grow up with.

My mother was a well-known singer. She had been a member of the Vienna State Opera and the Budapest State Opera and as a baby I was taken along to concerts and stages. I was not necessarily listening to classical music but always good music played well.

My mother was the sixteenth child in her family. She was the youngest and by the time she was bom, her oldest sister also had a child with whom she shared a bed. With so many loving families around her, my mother grew up happily to be a cheerful woman.

Because I lost my father when I was very young, I do not remember much about him. What I do know is largely what I have been told by my mother. I am like him in many ways. He was obviously a very serious man, always appearing sad. I seem to have inherited (继承) something of that from him. Fortunately, I inherited far more of my mother's happiness—a real show business personality (名人).

【1】Why does the author think that most people are musically illiterate?

A.They are not interested in music.

B.They don't listen to music very often.

C.They can't tell good music from bad music.

D.They have no chance to listen to well-played music.

【2】What does the author think of hearing a symphony orchestra on stage?

A.It inspires him to get on stage one day.

B.It makes him feel like getting stuck in a big wave.

C.It's very different from hearing orchestra music in films.

D.It can create the same feeling as watching powerful ads.

【3】What can be learned about the author as a baby?

A.He helped his mother a lot.

B.He learned music from his mother.

C.He went to his mother's workplace.

D.He listened to classical music every day.

【4】What would the author probably like to do in the future?

    A.To be a teacher.

    B.To be a stage player.

    C.To be an ad designer.

    D.To be a businessman.

  • 24、   “When people talk, listen completely.” Those words of Ernest Hemingway might be a pretty good guiding principle for many people.

Some firms use a technique known as a “listening circle” in which participants are encouraged to talk openly and honestly about the issues they face (such as problems with colleagues). In such a circle, only one person can talk at a time and there is no interruption. A study cited in the Harvard Business Review found that employees who had taken part in a listening circle suffered less social anxiety and had fewer worries about work-related matters than those who did not afterwards.

Listening has been critical to the career of Richard Mullender, who was a British police officer for 30 years. Eventually he became a negotiator. When he left the force, he realised that his skills might be applicable in the business world. So he set up a firm called the Listening Institute. Mr Mullender defines listening as “the identification, selection and interpretation of the key words that turn information into intelligence". It is crucial to all effective communication.

Plenty of people think that good listening is about nodding your head or keeping eye contact. But that is not really listening, Mr Mullender argues. A good listener is always looking for facts, emotions and indications of the speaker's values.

Another important point to bear in mind is that, when you talk, you are not listening. “Every time you share an opinion, you give out information about yourself," Mr Mullender says.

The lockdown has increased the need for managers to listen to workers, since the opportunities for casual conversation have dwindled. Mr Mullender thinks that many people have become depressed in their isolation (隔离),which can lead to stress and anger. He thinks there may be a business opportunity in helping managers listen more efficiently, so they can enhance employee well-being. After a year of isolation, many workers would probably love the chance to be heard.

【1】What is the value of attending a “listening circle"?

    A.Employees can relieve stress.

    B.Managers give comfort to colleagues.

    C.Employees may become more honest.

    D.Managers can solve technology problems.

【2】According to Mr Muilender, the key to being a good listener is ________.

    A.talking with speakers

    B.keeping eyes communication

    C.giving out your information

D.focusing on the analysis of speakers

【3】What does the underlined word “dwindled" in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Increased.

    B.Promoted.

    C.Shrank.

    D.Disappeared.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.The Definition of Listening

    B.The Secret of Successful Listening

    C.The Importance of Listening Circle

    D.The Listening Principle for Managers
