二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A small supermarket is decorated with a lot of red lanterns. There are piles of red envelopes on sale, for filling with cash and handing out as gifts. Such festive trappings can be seen everywhere in China in the build-up to the Lunar New Year. But this is Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, where Han Chinese are a mere 2.5% of the country's population. They are a sign that Chinese New Year is becoming a global holiday.

Several countries in Asia celebrate the Lunar New Year in their own way. But dragon and lion dances in Chinatowns over the world have helped make China's the most famous. In Tokyo, window cleaners dress up as the animals of the Chinese zodiac (生肖).America, Canada and New Zealand have issued commemorative stamps for the Year of the Rooster. Last year New York City made the Lunar New Year a school holiday for the first time.

The spread of the Spring Festival, as China calls it, is partly due to recent emigration(移民)from China: 9.5 million Chinese people have moved abroad since 1978, many of whom are far richer than earlier waves of migrants. It also reflects the wealth and ambitions of China's new middle class: festivities in other countries are partly aimed at the 6 million Chinese who are expected to spend their week long holiday abroad this year.

It's hoped that the festival will promote Chin's cultural "soft power" abroad. So related events are welcomed, such as a display this year of martial arts in Cyprus and a traditional Chinese temple-fair in Harare, Zimbabwe. More and more Chinese are glad to see foreigners enjoy such festivities. Though there is a growing enthusiasm among Chinese for Western celebrations such as Christmas, Chinese New Year is a welcome chance to reverse(逆转)the cultural flow.

1The scene in a supermarket shown in the first paragraph is to________ .

A.stress the importance of the Spring Festival

B.explain why the Lunar New Year is popular

C.present the popularity of Chinese New Year

D.show how other countries celebrate the Spring Festival

2What are the best-known celebration activities for the Lunar New Year in Chinatowns?

    A.Dragon and lion dances.

B.Eating dumplings and singing and dancing.

C.Dressing up as animals and dancing.

D.playing cards and letting off fireworks.

3Some countries celebrate the Spring Festival in order to .

    A.reflect on their own cultures

B.show respect to the Chinese traditions

C.promote the values of Chinese customs

D.attract Chinese to spend the holiday there

4What's the best title for the text?

A.Celebrating Chinese Festivals Becomes a Trend.

    B.Welcoming China's Cultural "Soft Power*',

C.China's Biggest Festival Is Going Global.

  • 23、Doctors Without Borders, which was set up in 1971 by doctors and journalists in France, is a humanitarian (慈善的) organization also known as its French name, Médecins Sans Frontières, and handles emergencies caused by wars, infectious diseases and natural disasters. Today, the group provides humanitarian medical aid in more than 70 countries. Over 90 percent of its money comes from private sources. In 1999, the group received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders is a documentary by the movie director Mark Hopkins. It tells the stories of four doctors and their voluntary work in Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mr. Hopkins and his crew filmed the doctors working under some of the most extreme and dangerous conditions.

Doctor Tom Krueger from the United States in the film volunteered in Liberia in 2003, after two civil wars. He said, “It was pretty much of a shock when I got here. You can’t describe the feeling of the heat in your body and the sweat running down your back, and the smell of the pus (脓) that hits your nose and of unwashed bodies in a closed room.”

Another doctor in the film, Australian Chris Brasheer, has been with Doctors Without Borders for nine years. He has served in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spent time in Liberia. He said, “No water, no electricity, no food — pretty apocalyptic really.”

Doctor Chiara Lepora from Italy also appears in the film. She spent several years working with the group. She said, “I will probably return. There are a lot of doctors who are willing to volunteer once, but not many doctors who are willing to repeat their experience.”

C.It was started only by doctors in the early 1970s.

D.It provides free medical aid for the countries in trouble.

【2】What is the underlined word “apocalyptic” in the fourth paragraph probably connected with?

    A.The end of the world.

    B.The feeling of sadness.

    C.The smell of dead bodies.

    D.The dangerous conditions.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Mr. Hopkins is a member of Doctors Without Borders.

B.Doctor Tom Krueger was in extreme fear when in Liberia.

C.Doctor Chiara Lepora is unwilling to repeat her experience.

  • 24、   “Can’t stop loving you ...” My 3-year-old son was singing along with Phil Collins from his car seat. But I was not in the mood to sing along. My manager at the biotech company where I had been working for a bit more than a year had just told me that, in spite of my excellent performance, he did not foresee giving me more responsibilities in the near future. I was working part time so that I could spend more time with my young children, and he believed the career growth I sought required a full-time employee. The message hit me hard. But it brought on a change that, in the end, taught me the power of embracing opportunities, no matter where they come from.

My manager’s decision planted a seed of self-doubt. Was he right? Was I asking for too much? But I reminded myself that I had already proved I could be an effective scientist on a part-time schedule. A friend suggested that I reach out to senior managers about opportunities in other departments. At first, I resolutely rejected that idea. Didn’t he understand? I wanted to work on antibodies and nothing but antibodies! That was what I knew, where I felt I could add the most value. And yet, I did not want to leave this cool company just because of one unsupportive manager.

With little expectation that it would lead anywhere, I approached the three senior managers. One did not respond. One had nothing to offer. The third invited me to chat. He patiently listened to my story, asked what I was looking for, and thenin the blink of an eyetold me that I was welcome to join him in building a vaeeine research unit. I told him I knew nothing about vaccines, but he waved nonchalantly (不以为意地) and said, “You will learn. You are smart and willing to work hard. You will make it.”

This comfort was exactly what I had been looking for, but I was still shaken by my manager’s lack of confidence in me. Could I really handle a high-responsibility role in a completely new field?

A few sleepless nights later, I decided that taking a chance on the unknown was better than staying in a position that made me miserable. The worst thing thal could happen was that I would fail. But I already felt like a failure, so why not try it?

I soon discovered a new passion. My career path within the company opened up. I took on more responsibilities, developed new skills, expanded my scientific horizons, worked with great people, and led fantastic projectsall because of a change that had felt foreed on me. It had pushed me further than I was willing to go, further than I thought I could cope with, and taught me that when I step out of my comfort zone, I find my most creative, productive self.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages.

First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise and skills than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the numbers of people involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is more likely to make risky decisions that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.

Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed (引起) by the decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to “shine”, to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a team's overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.
