二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   When it comes to dog training, I’ve come to understand that some things can be taught quickly, while others take a while. Do you know how I learned that lesson? From a French teacher I had in college.

It was beginner’s French, and from day one she had a “no English” class rule. I was confused by 99% of what she said, but I decided to give it a shot. I was excited as we began learning numbers and the alphabet, something I could easily follow, but when it came to putting together phrases, I was lost.

My teacher came up to me and said “quel est votre passe-temps favori?” which sounded like complete nonsense to me. I knew she was asking me a question, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. So I said “Sorry, I don’t understand.” Well, that broke the “no English” rule, so I just froze because I had no idea as to how to apologize in French.

So what did she do? She kept getting closer to me, repeating ‘quel est votre passe-temps favori?’ over and over, each time a bit louder, as if I had a hearing problem, rather than a complete shortage of comprehension.

I think about that class often. I really did feel hopeless, and the laughter from everyone else in class didn’t help. It’s not that she was a bad teacher. It’s just that she had very little patience for students like me who didn’t catch on immediately.

Well, it taught me to be more patient with Laika when learning new things. And since I don’t want her to be like the embarrassed kid in class, I don’t speak loudly at her or repeat myself when she doesn’t “get it.” I go back and figure out how I can help her understand and put meaning to my requests.

1How did the author find the “no English” class rule?

A.She was confused and decided not to obey it.

B.She was excited as she could easily follow it.

C.She found it challenging and was eager to break it.

D.She thought it hard but originally was willing to try it.

2Why couldn’t the author answer her French teacher’s question?

A.Because she didn’t hear the teacher clearly.

B.Because she didn’t know the correct answer.

C.Because she couldn’t understand the question.

D.Because she couldn’t express herself in French.

3What does the author learn from the experience of the French class?

A.A good teacher should not set strict rules for class.

B.A good teacher should be more patient with students.

C.A good teacher should repeat herself when necessary.

D.A good teacher shouldn’t cause students’ embarrassment.

4Who is Laika mentioned in the last paragraph?

    A.The author’s student. B.The author’s classmate.

    C.The author’s pet dog. D.The author’s daughter.

  • 22、   As people in rich countries know very well, eating too much food and burning too few calories is why a substantial number of us are overweight or obese. Now, however a remarkable change in perspective has come from the discovery that obesity actually provides people with temporary protection from the harmful effects of fat.

The insight has come from re-examming the common assumption that fatness itself drives the development of metabolic syndrome(代谢综合征), which is what causes so much of the actual damage. The syndrome comes with a mixture of life-threatening effects, with heart disease being among the most serious. In fact, it now seems that body fat may be a barrier that stops millions of Americans and fatty citizens elsewhere from going on to develop the syndrome. And the real damage is caused by the inflammatory(发炎的)effect of high levels of fat in the bloodstream. And ironically, it is fat cells that protect us from this by serving as toxin dumps (毒素垃圾场), locking away the real trouble-makers of the modern diet.

The problem is that this protection only lasts this long, until there is simply no more room inside the fat cells. That is when they start to break down, leading to a toxin spill(毒素溢出)into the bloodstream. This sets off an inflammatory response that causes various kinds of damage to body tissues. In this way, every extra calorie takes people closer to metabolic syndrome.

So what can we do to stop a superabundance of fat triggering the syndrome? Of course there’s no substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, but actually involving them into your daily life is hard. As with cigarettes and alcohol, a tax on calories—pricing foods by their energy content—is increasingly seen as another “level” to change behavior by making obesity too costly.

The new research may even suggest treatments to fight against metabolic syndrome, such as anti-inflammatory drugs. One promising candidate is salsalate, a drug related to aspirin, and the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston is now considering large-scale trials.

What might be more helpful though, is simply a wider recognition that fatty and sugary foods are more directly toxic than we has assumed. Ideally, people should be as well informed about the harmful effects of what they eat as, for example, pregnant women are about drinking and smoking.

It is a relief to know that you have your fat tissue to protect you when you consume the extra burger or sweetened soda. But now you know the dangers of pushing your friendly fat cells beyond their natural limits.

1From Paragraph 2 we know that the actual damage to health is likely to be caused by_________.

    A. fat cells B. metabolic syndrome

    C. heart disease D. bloodstream fats

2The protective function of fat cells stops working once ________________.

    A. their capacity  reaches a limit B. toxin spills into the bloodstream

    C. an inflammatory response appears D. metabolic syndrome is developed

3The author indicates in the text that obesity can be restricted by ______________.

    A. putting fats' protective function to full use

    B. unifying people's diet and exercise habits

    C. raising the prices of cigarettes and alcohol

    D. controlling food prices by their calorie content

4What is the author's suggestion to fight against metabolic syndrome?

    A. develop more drugs for heart disease

    B. ask people to keep away from fatty and sugary food completely

    C. strengthen the awareness of the harms of fatty and sugary food

    D. protect pregnant women from tobacco and wine

  • 24、Last summer, as part of my high school graduation project, I volunteered at Saunders House nursing home.

I choose this experience because it was something that I had never done before and I wanted to lend a helping hand. When I first came up with the idea of volunteering at a nursing home, I wanted to help out with activities and meet with some of the residents (住客).

At first it was challenging because I was extremely shy; however after getting to know the residents a little better, I started to feel more comfortable around them. My goal in volunteering was to bring a smile to the residents by doing different activities from word games to playing chess. I feel as if I had accomplished that goal.

At the nursing home, I did a lot of different activities with the residents ranging from Jeopardy, to Wheel of Fortune. One of my favorites was a word game where I would write a ten letter word on the board and the residents would try to come up with as many smaller words as possible. I could tell that it was one of their favorite games because they always seemed to be so enthusiastic when they played.I also transported residents to and from their rooms when they needed help; and whenever it was a nice day out, I would take them outside to get some fresh air and relax. On Saturday mornings, I would deliver the newspaper to the residents and on Sundays, I assisted with morning church services.

The most unforgettable part of this experience was when I had one on one conversations with the residents; it was incredible how many great stories they had to tell. One of the first residents was Mr. Charles Bowman who is one hundred and three years old!

【3The author felt it ________ to do the activities with the residents.

    A.enjoyable  B.upset

    C.uncomfortable  D.challenging

B.encourage readers to do voluntary work
