The ethnic group is known for its traditional embroidery(刺绣), with thousands of women engaged(从事)in it. Qin Naishiqing was one of them. Although she was over 90 years old, she was still able to cut paper patterns. “You should be very skillful in embroidery to become good at paper cutting. When you get a piece of paper, form pictures of the patterns in your mind instead of actually drawing then” Qin said.

Qin’s two daughters-in-law usually joined her in guiding young people to reproduce some common patterns in folk art on embroidered products, such as phoenixes(凤凰), dragons and flowers.

Every Dong girl is encouraged to learn the skill at an early age, around 9 or 10 years old. At the time she gets married, she will traditionally receive a whole set of clothes, including a wedding dress, made by her mother. And on the clothes, the traditional embroidery of the Dong people could be seen.

  • 25、   Reading is getting more popular among young Chinese. A new survey says that 85% of young people in China read at least 1 book last year. The number of young people who are reading has been rising in recent years, especially for teenagers, who read an average(平均) of 11.5 books.

The data(数据) shows that teenagers spend much more time reading from school textbooks to some other reading materials, such as novels, e— books, magazines and so on. But younger children (ages 2—8) are mainly reading for fun. Compared with the past, the time teenagers spend on pleasure reading has dropped.

When it comes to technology and reading, the server suggests little. It does point out that many parents control the time of electronic reading, mainly because of worrying about increased screen time. However, most Chinese parents are helping their children to develop a reading habit. They are served as examples for their children. More than 70% of Chinese parents spend at least 20 minutes a day reading to their children aged 0 to 8 years old, and visit bookstores with them an average of three times a year. Data shows that kids and teens who do a lot of reading, compared to those who don’t like reading, have more books in the home, and more books brought for them. Their parents read more often, and would like to spare time to read with them.

When was the last time you read a book? If you’re one of the countless people who don’t develop a habit of reading, you might be missing out. Everything you read fill your head with new bits of information, and you never know then it might be useful. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to deal with any challenge you’ll face. Remember that although you might lose something else, knowledge can never be taken away from you.

Now open a book, and feed your soul.

1Why do many parents control the time of their children’s electronic reading?

A.E— books are expensive. B.It may harm children’s health.

C.It’s very hard to order. D.It could be a waste of time.

2How should parents encourage their children to read more?

B.Buy more books for them in bookstores or borrow some from libraries.

C.Ask them to read more books every day through setting up reading groups.

D.Ask as role models for them, read for their children and read for themselves.

    3What’s the survey mainly about?

A.Teenagers’ after— class activities. B.Parents— child relationships.

Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram of the result of our survey. Let’s have a look at it.

    Chores

    Teenagers in small villages

    Teenagers in big cities

    Take out the rubbish

    1600

    1000

    Sweep the floor

    1200

    850

    750

    Do the dishes

    1000

    400

    Fold the clothes

    900

    1100

We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. Our advice to parents in big cities is that parents should give their children some chores to do. Doing chores teaches teenagers to take care of themselves.

Have you ever experienced the feeling of falling as you start to fall asleep? Sometimes you may wake up to this feeling. If so, don’t worry. Many people have felt the same thing.

In fact, these muscle twitches(肌肉抽搐)in the arms, legs or other parts of the body are called hypnic jerks(入嚼抽动)or sleep starts. And they are very c【1】 . Up to 70 percent of people experience them sometimes, Huffington Post reported. But what causes it?

There are some theories(理念). Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself, especially if the person is anxious or unable to get comfortable. A【2】 you’re going to sleep, your muscles become relaxed. But your brain s【3】 awake. It misunderstands the relaxing of your muscles as a sign that you’re falling. The brain then jerks the body awake as if it’s trying to protect you.

Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks. When we sleep, we experience two phases non-rapid eye movement (NREM,非快速眼动睡眠期) and rapid eye movement (REM,快速眼动睡眠期). During REM, our heart rate, breathing and nervous s【4】 can fact irregularly. If the body experiences flashes(一瞬间)of REM while entering sleep, these irregularities could cause twitches.

If you don’t want to experience hypnic jerks, scientists have some suggestions. When you become r【5】 relaxed, you can learn how to reconnect slowly by moving your fingers and toes a little bit. Then start to move your head and open your eyes, while being aware of yourself as you get out of the relaxed state.

But experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are homeless. If it wakes you up, simply roll over and go back to sleep,. But keep in mind: a caffeinated(含咖啡因的) drink, e【6】 evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often.
