24、A team of scientists are carrying out a project at the University of Greenwich in London. They are trying to find ways to make food on Mars (火星) in the future. The project is called Feeding Mars. It tries to use water, fish and fish waste to grow fruit and vegetables on Mars.
It would take at least 21 months to reach Mars, learn about its surface and return to Earth. So it would be a big help if the spacemen could grow fresh food on Mars itself.
Farming on Mars, however, will be very hard. There’s plenty of water that could be taken from ice just below the surface, but the land on Mars is missing the nutrients (养分) that living things need. The team say that they could solve the problem by growing plants and fish together. Fish waste can then be used to provide nutrients for plants.
“It is expected that you can grow lots of food, such as vegetables, salads, teas and medicinal plants on Mars,” said Dr Benz Kotzen, who leads the project. “You can even harvest (捕获) fish for food then.”

25、 Lewis Carrol is one of the most famous writers for children of all time. He is the author of the children’s classics Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
Lewis Carrol was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was the oldest boy in a family of eleven children. As a child, he did well in mathematics and won many prizes. He also created games for himself and his brothers and sisters.
Lewis Carrol studied at Richmond School (1844-1845) and Rugby School (1846-1850). In 1850, he started studying at Christ Church, Oxford. After finishing his studies, he became a teacher of mathematics at Oxford. Apart from teaching mathematics, he also took photos and wrote essays and poems.
Lewis Carrol loved children. He became friends with the children of Henry George Liddel, Alice and her sisters Lorina and Edith. The three little girls often visited the young mathematics teacher in his college rooms. They spent many hours with Carrol, sitting on his couch while he told them fantastic stories about dream worlds. He also drew pictures for these stories.
During an afternoon picnic in 1864, Dodgson told the Liddel children a story of Alice’s Adventures Underground. Alice liked it very much and when they returned home, she asked him to write it down for her. He fulfilled the little girl’s wish and wrote the story down. He illustrated (配图) it with his own drawings and gave it to Alice.
One day, the story fell into the hands of the novelist Henry Kingsley. He read it and told Carrol that he should publish it. The book was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. It became very successful. Carrol wrote some more stories and in 1871 published Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.

26、Every year, schools in our city have a “Big Day”. Students put their old things on sale for charity. The money will be used to help others. But at my school, Big Day is only about eating!
After lunch, different grades get their own stalls (摊位). All of the students take turns running their grade’s stalls. Each student has just 10 minutes, so everyone gets to have a turn. Every stall has its own products.
For example, as 10th graders, we sold different drinks. The most popular one was an Oreo milkshake with ice cream. Grade 11 sold lollipops, which only cost $1 (6.56 yuan) each.
I could only work from 1:50 p.m. to 2. But it was the busiest 10 minutes of the activity. I arrived at our stall three minutes early.
My partners waved at me and said, “Come here! We need some help!” I was pulled to a table with several paper cups. I was asked to shake each cup for 30 seconds to make it taste better.
However, when I shook the first cup for nearly 20 seconds, the salesman shouted, “Hey! Hurry up! People are waiting!” So I shook it faster and finally gave it to the customer.
It was very tiring work, but it was still fun to sell milkshakes to the other students. Finally, I finished my work and bought a milkshake for myself.
